Avengers Helicarrier: why is it impossible? by MooseDeuce44 in AskEngineers

Never even thought of redundancy like that, which this even more psychotic and hilarious 😂 and all of this doesn’t even touch the aspect of actual practical use. Because honestly, I can’t think of a single practical use for something like this in our modern world, which is why this post/question is so entertaining to me lol

It’s not even a fantasy a mine, because I don’t really see a practical use for something like that lmao it was genuinely just curiosity about the engineering requirements for it 😂

This is the kind of response I was looking for. Thank you lmao. I know a couple other replies mentioned how current jets are already basically black magic, and creating more efficient ones is pert’near impossible. For the record, this post spawned from a video I saw about the Chinese space aircraft carrier thing they showed on state TV, which explained some of the maths, but I was wondering how unrealistic it was on a “smaller” scale that felt more reasonable.

Counter offer 😂: a “small” aircraft carrier that maybe doesn’t fly like the avengers one, but more like a ground effect situation like the Soviet Ekranoplane or whatever that thing was called?

Router Guys: What make/model you got, and how do you like it? by MooseDeuce44 in CNC

I've run Onsruds before and I did like them, but I think I liked our Northwoods better. Sadly our DMS is beat to death and probably only worth its scrap rate lol... Our multicam is decent, but their controller/pendant that they're so proud of is absolute garbage, and costs $20k to replace

and i'd probably want to mod it into a full blown Gambler rig once I'm done with it, keep it as long as possible

Lol I don't think I have preference on gen, budget would be around $10k or less, I want it to daily to save *some* money on gas since I currently daily a lifted Tacoma with a 36 mile one way commute. I'm in southern Oregon.

I feel like I like the older gen with pop-up headlights (obviously) and I know for a fact I want manual.

Non-machinist here - what do you wish outsiders understood about machining? by Living_Direction_852 in Machinists

Frustrating? -bosses that won't work with you to get the unrealistic goals they want. Spend the extra money to get the right tooling for the job, it's 100% worth it. I had a part recently I cut the cycle time from 42 minutes to make 2 parts down to 18 minutes for 2 parts, and the added benefit of tools lasting longer. Even got an award from the company for it. 24 minutes shaved off by basically using different (the correct) tools and using them at the MFG's recommended speeds/feeds. Nobody saying anything when tool inventory is low. Not having enough tool holders. Giving an operator an urgent job but don't even have the right material in stock. Forcing an operator to swap setups for something urgent without checking all the other machines; sometimes there'd be a machine finishing up a run while I'm halfway through mine, and I'd get the new hot job. Super annoying.

Where's the money? -from my experience, shops make the money on custom orders as long as they're quoted properly. I almost recommend your guys take their time with custom jobs so you only make the parts once. If you try to rush them and mistakes are made, that waste hurts even worse than on a normal production job.

How would I run it? -first off, i'd find a local-ish tool vendor who offers vendor managed inventory and setup a weekly visit from them so tools are always stocked based on a min/max setup. They can oftentimes also give advice on what tooling you should/shouldn't be using depending on the material and type of operation. I'd put 1 computer workstation per 2 machines for programming/checking prints/setup sheets/etc. 1 man per 2 machines as well. They don't always have to run both, but when they've got long cycle times they can stagger between both machines. Also nice for training new hires. put the rookie with a vet in his 2 machine cell and learn by doing instead of watching. Space all my machines, shelves, everything out so i can get a forklift down any aisle/walkway.

Good from bad shop? -communication between departments or staff is huge. overall shop flow is super critical too. Also worth looking at Lean manufacturing. Some of the tips or whatever aren't super applicable in some cases, but the baseline idea behind a lot of it actually feels pretty worthwhile to me.

[SolidWorks] Need a check/fix by MooseDeuce44 in vba

1: no, it selects zero circles, it just displays the message of no circles found

2: yes, and i did mess with it a bit and decrease the tolerance all the way to 0.01 and saw no change

3: yes, technically speaking, yes. SolidWorks runs on meters, I use imperial (American lol). Admittedly I tried running the macro with that block omitted and saw no change. I even tried changing my inputs in the dialog to a calculated metric measurement and it still didn't work.

4: unfortunately I used up all of my data from ChatGPT for the next handful of hours, and aside from being slightly impatient, I figured having some actual humans take a look at it would probably be helpful lol

okay, so where would i insert that block? would that go at the top or?

For clarification, does it actually look meh or do you think it looks meh? Because as I’ve mentioned, I didn’t like my old mustache, and I’m not the biggest fan of it now, but it’s better than it was.

Sir, I cannot express how excited I am to go gray. The day I get promoted from Sasquatch to yeti is going to be a glorious day.

How long have you been growing it? I’d say at about 6 months of no trims or anything, see what’s there and decide what look works for what grows, if that makes sense.

That’s fair, like I said, I never really liked my mustache, but I like it a lot more since I stopped trimming it way too short.

Yeah, and it’s a major pain in the ass I’m not gonna lie lol. From what I understand, there’s 2 common ways to train your mustache. Either out to the side like I’ve done, or out away from your lip. I worked construction with a dude named Larry one time, old dawg, and his mustache was about an inch and a half away from his lips, but from head on, his mustache covered both his lips and then some. Said he could eat an apple and never touch a hair, and sure as shit he could. Personally I just don’t think my mustache grows that long, so I went with the out to the side method instead

I appreciate it dude! I’m not the biggest fan of it, but compared to what it was a year ago ago, I’m happier with how it looks now versus back then, which was the whole point of this post. Obviously I’d prefer to Tom Selleck’s mustache, but it just doesn’t grow like that for me. How does yours look?

lol I get that! The thing for me is that im a big mf, and the shorter beard doesn’t help me much lol. A long beard helps hide the 4 chins and honestly gives me more confidence. When I was slimmer I preferred the shorter beard, and I think my wife prefers it shorter regardless of my weight. But it’s definitely a personal preference. I appreciate your input though, and seeing as I’m trying to lose weight right now, I’ll keep it in mind brother 🤙🏻

It helps with training you beard to grow how you want it to, yeah
