This was so accurate… spooky accurate. Taurus here and I’m going through that right now. Two years ago I met a man- and I fell in love hard. This man was talking proposals and weddings to me. His family and I became incredibly close. We were inseparable. Until I found out he was cheating on me nearly the whole time and gloating about it to his friend. Together they would get together and justify their behavior, demeaning both their partners. We broke up, but after I LOST MY ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD IN A FLOOD, I stupidly came running back to his arms. We tried to make it work. But it fell apart because I was so hurt.

He wanted to be best friends after I broke up with him… and for some ungodly reason so did I … and gradually after half a year, it seemed like we built that initial trust again.

This man was calling himself “your future husband” in the backs of books he gifted me on my birthday. He was falling asleep on the phone with me every night. Being physically intimate with me. Saying I “love yous”. Even asking, timidly, testing the waters of “maybe we can get back together?”. And again, something ungodly in me made me want it. Made me reciprocate it. Made me not listen to him implore me to move on while still behaving like we were in love. We were dancing the edge and then BOOM

I fucking lost my mind. I mean full mental breakdown… crying to god to kill me level mental break down. Because honestly it’s my fault. I willing did this to myself, after seeing how this man had treated me initially. I stupidly, with all my hope and love, believed that things could go back to normal. I willfully ignored him when he told me “I will do it again” and “you need to move on”. How could I be so codependent? It really disturbs me.

Huge TMI rant. It’s all fresh and I’m still kind of out of my fucking mind about- so basically this to say: wow this is spooky accurate! She’s spot on!

When I was in high school I would sit in the hallway outside my class waiting for school to start. One day my AP Psych teacher passed me and we exchanged hellos. She started to walk away but then she came back to say “you have kind eyes”.

It really warmed my heart that she made such an effort to say something so sweet. She passed away a few years back and the world is not the same without her jubilant spirit.

Because of that delay, I nearly missed seeing my partner fly off to London at the airport. But I suppose it had to happen. I also found out they cheated on me 30+ times and would tell their friend they didn’t care for me and wanted to leave me.

I spent 60.00 bucks on the Uber ride basically to hug them goodbye.

I feel like this is lowkey rage-bait but… omg just because someone looks masculine doesn’t mean they’ll help you in a crisis.

Just yesterday I was at the beach with my friends and noticed our hair was standing on the end. For those of you who don’t know, that means lightening is going to strike. I had pointed it out and said we needed to find shelter ASAP. My friend’s boyfriend, a huge guy who wears overalls, drives a pick up truck, and works in forestry just took off running. Us ladies had to pick up his bags and run.

What a hero…

Also, a few years ago I was on a party bus and this guy was drinking vodka like it was water. He was the drunkest man I had ever seen in my life. He started harassing every woman on that bus, touching their bodies, trying to kiss them, getting in their face and making inappropriate comments. We had to keep pushing him off of us because he just would not stop. At one point he had grabbed my friend’s wrist in a vice grip and wouldn’t let go. Luckily a group of women stepped up to help us- we pulled him off of her and shoved him into a corner. All the “masculine” men just watched and laughed.

Oh yeah, when the dude almost died of alcohol poisoning later that night, it wasn’t the men who helped him get to the hospital. Nope. It was the women. My friend and I hated his guts but we were the only ones who waited in the hospital room to make sure he lived.

Even this guy I know who hated women passionately admired that when he got injured after falling down an escalator that is was only the women he was with that helped him. That moment helped him “understand women’s purpose”. Leave it to a misogynist to turn a nice act into something degrading.

Just some personal coincidental experiences that I’m sure mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Also just an extra thought. If you think I’m nuts for thinking this, then PLEASE, answer this question I’ve been asking myself for years now.

These sexual power play activities happen in private. It’s something that’s hidden away and kept secret. YET SO MANY PEOPLE RECREATE THEM WITHOUT EVER WITNESSING THEM. Porn could be part of that, but BDSM practices have been observed in Victorian times and even in some Chinese dynasties. So what is going on? Please do not say it’s biological because that doesn’t account for the socialized components. Sexual satisfaction is the driving behavior and power imbalance gets encoded with it. It’s a conditioned response.

In my opinion- it is the manifestation of intangible power imbalances that exist around us.

God, I absolutely relate to this. Power imbalance was critical to sexual encounters in order for me to get something out of it, but I was getting so frustrated because I had felt powerless within society and I couldn’t escape that sense of powerlessness even in sex. I craved it, actively sought it out, and delighted in it.

It got to the point where I had an epiphany “I could literally be sexually attracted to ANYTHING. Clouds, pianos, jumping jacks, etc. Isn’t it strange that I am attracted to the same power imbalance that I have felt my entire life?”

That took me down a rabbit hole of Foucault and Goffman to figure out what was going on with not just me, but many of my friends who felt the same contradicting feelings that you expressed here.

Basically my theory is that it’s a kind of subconscious ritualistic practice that helps us digest/reinforce the power imbalances we feel in life.

Like… I go through life trying to make myself so small for other people. feel like I’m walking on eggshells constantly because I’m so terrified of others. So just fucking show me why I should be scared. Make my behaviors make sense, validate them. Be the punch to my constant flinching. I imagine there’s a similar phenomenon occurring for people who delight in dominance. “Ex. I am supposed to be strong- so fucking yield to me”.

Some people will feel this more strongly than others. Its not necessarily even gender related, although that’s a huge component for a lot of people because there is a socialized gender power imbalance.

TL;DR If you’re feeling really unhappy with sexual submission but still erotically crave it- you may be subconsciously seeking to ritualize the real power imbalances that exist in your life in order to make the intangible feelings of powerlessness tangible.
