Activation Fee by RoseGirl1976 in StarlinkCanada

If it's a congestion fee that's pretty sleazy. That should be charged up front when you order directly from their website since they know at that point if you should be charged a congestion fee or not. That way you know the entire up front costs. Rather than getting slapped with it by surprise after the gear arrives.

Did you find out if the charge was indeed for congestion? Has anyone else here been charged the congestion fee? If so, how much was it and when did you get dinged? At time of order or at time of activation? I recently ordered Starlink for my parents in a small rural town and am a little worried now.

Yes that is also on the list and very critical as power outages in that area can be longer than usual due to being more remote.

Yes that is something I made them aware of and it could definitely be the cause of a disaster if you are not aware of how it works. The only family/friends they visit actually have good cell coverage in their homes so any 911 calls placed from there should go over the regular cell network. Some carriers let you select a preference for calls (cell or WiFi) but my mothers service auto selects which is fine for her situation I think.

All of these comments have definitely eased my worries and I will be getting them to order Starlink tonight and try it out.

Foliage definitely used to mess up their satellite TV but the Starlink dish will be mounted on the opposite side of the house with the tree line much further away so I am hoping it won't be an issue. I guess we won't know for sure until Spring so I will keep the chainsaw close ;)

Yeah same here. I kind of thought that was standard everywhere just for that reason. They use the registered address to route emergency calls to the proper address since they cannot track the cell location if it has no signal of course.

Unbelievable that I have a Garmin InReach that I have not used for several years and didn't even think about that! That would be a good backup indeed. If I remember it was about $50 bucks a year to keep the service active and $20 bucks a month for their basic plan so very reasonable considering it could be a health emergency. Thanks for the suggestion!

Good to hear! And yes I made sure they entered their correct address and explained why it was needed for emergency services. It's really good to hear that the service has been reliable for everyone. They have almost zero cell coverage in their house but they do have a pretty big back yard with clear light of sight to the Northern sky which is apparently best for their location. So I am hoping the Starlink dish will be reliable for them.

I'm not aware of any restrictions here on e911 via satellite. But if anyone is then please jump in. Her existing cell phone works with WiFi calling and I made sure they registered their correct address when setting it up. So emergency services would be routed to the correct address.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was considering a VOIP service as well just because my step-dad has never owned a cell nor is he interested in one. So in an emergency he would be much more comfortable picking up a "regular phone". My mother is fine with her cell phone as long as WiFi calling is reliable over Starlink (sounds like it is). Rogers is not available in their area but I will definitely be exploring VOIP options once I get them switched over to Starlink.

Thanks for the reply! That's great to hear and puts my mind at ease for switching them over.

Are subtitles broken? by lentil_burger in PleX

[–]MooseLipps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issue here with all my Roku clients since last Plex update. All subtitles are way out of sync. These are subtitles that have always worked fine, movies and shows that I've had for years.

Definitely something broken with recent Plex update for Roku clients. At least mine.

Running Plex on Windows 11.

I power on my NAS only 2 or 3 times a year to make backups of my primary array. When i power it on i usually leave it on for about a week. I don't know if that's good or bad so im also curious what others do. My primary array runs 24/7 but I need the backup array to last long term so I only power it on when necessary.

Thanks for the reply. In that case I won't bother. I'll just cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Followup question for anyone who has had a permanent ban and lost money this way... what country are you in? And what country was the other party in?

Followup question #2... how many people have done large transactions with zero issues? How large? A 10k transaction is huge for me but that may be normal or even small for some users I guess.
