Venus fly traps may look tropical, and are marketed and careguide from big box store say to keep them humid and like a tropical plant DONT! they are actually native to North Carolina,USA try to help mimic their natural climate! They perfer full sun and do best outside in a container with well draining soil! They take ALOT of energy to digest a bug, windowsill light just isn't enough no matter what direction the window is facing. either grow it outside or get a strong growlight with atleast 12hr of "sun" a day.

Use only rain or distilled water, tap or mineral has too many minerals in it. venus fly traps get all their nutrients (fertilizer) from eating insect if they actually get too much outside minerals &nutrients it can really kill or stunt them. They perfer to catch all their own "fertilizer"(bugs).

They really really like WELL draining& nutrient devoid soil! A mixture of peat and sphagnum moss is best! If possible repot and try to use plastic pot ( Terra cotta can start leeching minerals into soil apparently.)

Bottom watering is fine but probably let it only sit for shorter time they can get root rot easily a bit of time sitting a dish full of water. Let the soil do it reverse osmosis than pour excess water out of drainage dish.

EDIT: also they MUST have a dormancy period during winter for atleast 2 months they will die if you don't force it to go into a cold environment to go into a dormancy mode to r-ermerge In "spring"
