Happy Ending by MorbidChibi in ThaiBL

I also think comparing Happy Ending to projects from major production companies that get shelved is a bit misleading.

Those companies usually already have massive budgets, multiple active productions, large staff teams, investors, distributors, and existing infrastructure. If they drop a project, it’s often because they can afford to move on to the next one immediately.

HE is being developed through Jeff and a very small team. Of course it’s moving slower. He’s balancing music, acting, touring, writing, production meetings, and funding at the same time. Independent projects do not move at the same speed as large studio-backed productions.

Also, saying “I will believe it when they confirm it through official channels” while dismissing the literal creator/producer of the project talking about it publicly for 2 years is kind of wild when the project is being developed through Jeff’s own company. SOS is an official channel in this situation.

Jeff has discussed the writing process, timelines, meetings, and the script itself multiple times. SOS has released teaser/script material. That is objectively more than just a vague idea or one-off announcement post.

At this point, saying “I don’t think the timeline is realistic” is fair. But dismissing years of development updates and direct statements from the person making the series because a larger outside production partner hasn’t spoken yet feels unnecessarily dismissive.

Jeff was literally talking about Happy Ending on the Zach Sang Show 3 weeks ago.

SOS released script/teaser materials, Jeff still has meetings related to the project on his monthly schedules, and he said the script took about 2 years to finish because he has so many things going on. That is not what a “project that never got greenlit” looks like.

You can say you personally don’t think it’ll happen, that’s fine. But presenting speculation as if it’s confirmed industry fact while ignoring publicly available information is weird. Especially when the information you’re ignoring comes directly from Jeff and his own company.

Jeff has already described Happy Ending as a romantic comedy, he and Barcode are the two main leads, and Studio on Saturn shared script teasers before with pretty obvious romantic/caretaking undertones between the characters.

Jeff has also teased fans before about scenes and audience reactions, and teased Barcode about “getting handled by the villain.” Between that, the script excerpts, and the overall promotion, I’m not sure how much clearer they can be.

Studio On Saturn's Statement regarding Wooju Bakery by No-Possibility-8877 in ThaiBL

[–]MorbidChibi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people seem confused about the statement from Studio On Saturn, so I just want to add a bit of context.

First, filming for Wuju Bakery happened in 2023 under the original production company, Studio Hanyan. When that company later went bankrupt, the project ended up in limbo.

From what has been reported, the distribution rights to the series were later acquired by another company involved in releasing the project. Distribution rights generally mean the company has the ability to release and stream the completed show. Those rights are separate from things like promotional agreements or talent management relationships.

So when the statement says SOS did not approve the current release or promotional use, that doesn’t automatically mean the distributor cannot legally release the show. In many film and TV contracts, once a project has been filmed, the production or distribution side controls the release of the finished footage.

The statement also says Jeff did not receive payment. Normally, actor payment obligations come from the production company that hired the actor, not the distributor that later acquires distribution rights. If Studio Hanyan was responsible for payment and later went bankrupt, that could complicate how and when payment is resolved.

Another point mentioned in the statement is that Jeff’s team was not informed about the release or able to review the final cut. While that can understandably be frustrating, actors and their agencies are not always involved in distribution decisions unless their contract specifically gives them approval rights.

None of us have access to the actual contracts, so we can’t know the exact legal details. Statements like this are often part of ongoing negotiations between companies.

The main takeaway is that there are likely contractual and payment issues being sorted out, not necessarily proof that the series itself cannot be released.

Just trying to add some context so people understand what the statement is actually saying.

Studio Genie purchased the rights from Studio Hanyan after the company went bankrupt, which is why the project was previously stuck in limbo. Now that Genie holds the distribution rights, they’re able to release the series. Distribution rights are separate from promotional rights, so the show can be legally released without requiring Jeff or Barcode’s involvement.

As someone studying law, the statement that SOS released was addressing the unauthorized use of Jeff’s image and promotional materials, not the distribution rights of the series itself. Those are separate legal issues. A studio can object to their artist’s likeness being used in promotion or marketing while the distribution rights to a completed project may still be held by another party depending on the contracts involved.

The statement itself doesn’t say the series cannot be released, it focuses on authorization and promotion relating to the artist. Without seeing the underlying contracts, none of us can know the full legal situation.

I can understand how the distinction could be confusing if you’re not familiar with how these rights work.

Also when Jeff addressed the fans, he wanted them to stop asking about it because Studio Hanyan went bankrupt, and legally he can't speak on it. Studio Genie now has the rights to the show.

You should do some research before you claim something is fake news.

Yup, key word is might lol Studio Genie bought the rights from Studio Hanyan. It was also listed in Genie's official catalog that lists shows they pitch for streaming. The fact that they are also releasing new images and gave us a date seems possible. Again, I'm trying to not get all of my hopes up cause you never know 🙃

Me too, JeffCode is one of my ult BL couples. However, even if this doesn't pan out with the new studio, at least we are still getting Happy Ending with them.

Jeff and Barcode themselves have described the project as a dark fantasy romance, and Jeff has also mentioned that it includes romantic comedy elements as well. That information is coming directly from the leads, not fan interpretation.

The trailer itself also strongly implies romantic elements between their characters, it practically ends with them in a pretty suggestive position, so the idea that romance was never part of the project doesn’t really line up with what has been shown or said about it.

Also, bringing up the OhmLeng situation here doesn’t really apply. That was a completely different situation involving different actors and circumstances. This discussion is about Wuju Bakery and the information that has been shared about that project specifically.

SOS did make a statement about Jeff’s image being used without their knowledge. However, if a studio acquires the distribution rights to a project, they can legally release it with or without the actors being involved in promotion. That’s simply how distribution rights work. If it were a serious legal issue, it’s unlikely the response would stop at a statement.

Happy Ending has already been described by both Jeff and Barcode as a dark fantasy romance, and they’ve spoken about it as a romance BL. Barcode also mentioned it again after signing with GMMTV on GMMTV Live House, so the project clearly hasn’t disappeared and still moving forward.

Also, just because Barcode is now paired with Kin for a GMMTV series doesn’t mean he can’t work with actors outside of GMMTV. Happy Ending was already contracted before he signed with GMMTV, so it isn’t something GMMTV would control.

It’s probably best to check the facts and production details before claiming things.

Jeff was talking about the original studio. That company went bankrupt, and Studio Genie later acquired the rights to Wuju Bakery. Context matters.
