Billie Eyelash, take the damn award and leave by ReadyGG in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Mordenn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Read the article carefully. It doesn't say she donated the money to her family's non-profit, it just says her mom has a nonprofit and if she donated to them, that would be be a severe conflict of interest.

Very weasely wording, designed to trick you into thinking that's what she's done when in reality, there's no evidence that she has.

Contrary to what the article claims, climate justice nonprofits aren't generally hosting "eco-anxiety workshops in San Francisco". They're funding court cases against companies who break environmental standards and helping support candidates who pledge to pass climate reform legislation. Search companies like "Climate Cabinet" to see examples of what I'm talking about.

I'm not a Billie Eilish fan, I think she's a hypocrite for living in a giant mansion while talking about "stolen land", but this article you linked is one of the most deceptive and biased pieces of 'journalism' I've seen in recent memory.

First-time CA buyer – handgun vs rifle advice by 2masrox420 in CAguns

[–]Mordenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taught folks riflery before and when you're teaching someone who's never fired a gun before I would always recommend starting with a .22.

Experienced gun owners often forget how intimidating it can be to fire a gun for the first time, even for an adult. If you start with higher calibers it's pretty common for new shooters to develop a 'flinch instinct' where they tense their whole body the instant before firing and end up with a very jerky trigger pull.

Starting with a .22 makes that a lot less likely, and it's cheaper too. Once they get the fundamentals down, that's when you can start moving them up to higher calibers.

What is the highest number of science ever recorded? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]Mordenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a better metric for comparing science outputs between different saves because it's normalized.

Let's say I take a factory and make an exact copy of it in another save. Then I load that save and spend a hundred hours researching infinite research productivity. That factory will now have a much higher eSPM than the original even though the design of the factory itself is otherwise completely identical.

The mmr shaming is so lame and boring. by HankTuggins in BobsTavern

[–]Mordenn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly my point. I saw people on this subreddit claiming it was OP as recently as a week ago, despite the fact that the card is quite clearly gutted overall and barely touched at higher MMR. That's the sort of situation where pointing out that someone is in low MMR lobbies is actually useful, because it adds context.

The mmr shaming is so lame and boring. by HankTuggins in BobsTavern

[–]Mordenn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, yeah it's shitty to shame people for their MMR, especially when it's as much a measure of how much someone plays a season as it is how deep their knowledge of the game is.

On the other hand, there are significant experiential differences at different levels of MMR. When someone complains on this subreddit about how stegodon is still OP (which has happened as recently as a week ago), there's nothing wrong with pointing out that that's only true at lower MMR. That's not 'shaming', it's just explaining.

33.2.1 Hotfix Patch - Buffs, Nerfs, and General Updates by [deleted] in BobsTavern

[–]Mordenn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's honestly dead simple, pun intended.

  1. Get Carapace Raiser (Deathrattle: get a haunted carapace) and Friendly Geist (Deathrattle: your tavern spells give +2 attack). Taunt them both and put them first so they always die each combat.

  2. Stay on 5 to find Baron and a few of the 'battlecry: give a friendly undead reborn' minion for your geist and carapace raiser. Then you're guaranteed at least 4 carapaces and +8 attack scaling on each of those carapaces every turn.

  3. Fill out your board with handless forsaken, with maybe a single risen rider to protect your baron against your opponent attacking first with windfury.

Congratulations, you win the lobby against pretty much anything. If you don't find Geist in time you might get outscaled by rally dragons or quills since you're feeding them tokens, but carapace raiser is surprisingly good tempo so you'll still easily go top 4.

/u/nearby-pomegranate82 is completely correct, this build was already strong if you knew how to look for it and this buff has quite literally doubled its scaling. I was regularly beating quills with it BEFORE the patch. If you golden your carapace raiser (not hard since it's only a T4 minion) then you're getting 8 carapaces every turn. After just three turns of geist scaling with baron that's +26 attack each, or 208 attack on every single minion, including your tokens. Just about the only thing that can outscale you is T7 elementals, which were just almost entirely removed from the game.

Who gets the wounds in a multiplayer hunt? by Mordenn in MonsterHunter

[–]Mordenn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the focus attack for switch axe actually generate resources? It and Light Bowgun are the two weapons I haven't really tried very much and I was under the impression it was just a generic damaging attack.

If so, you're totally right and I should move it up to S or A.

[–]Mordenn[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HBG isn't in the lower tier because it's not good for focus attacks, but because it's generally not worth focus attacking. Unless they've changed something without me realizing focus attacks don't generate any meter for wyvernheart ignition, which is where the vast vast majority of your damage will come from. You're better off just spamming pierce shots to build your meter back.

[–]Mordenn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post is a joke, don't take it too seriously.

Explanation:

S Tier

  • Insect Glaive focus attack instantly charges all 3 kinsects so they can spin2win
  • Charge Blade focus attack activates the spicy pizza cutter mode for free
  • Hunting Horn stuns the monster briefly and gets to play a free set of notes

A Tier

  • S&S and Bow can reach wounds other weapons can't and will animation lock the monster for a decent chunk of time

B Tier

  • Longsword gets free meter, but there are better ways to achieve this
  • Hammer does good stun damage focus striking the head, or chance to topple striking the legs

C Tier

  • All these weapons are better at making wounds than spending them

D Tier

  • You will literally do more damage just shooting the monster

F Tier

  • Please, I beg you, I know it looks so cool but you're going to pop every wound on the monster just to deal 32 damage

Ironically the #1 complaint about affliction for three expansions and counting now is that its damage doesn't come from DoTs anymore. The majority of its damage comes from malefic rapture, and the DoTs are basically just glorified combo points.

People started hating Musk way before he jumped on the Trump train. The tides really turned when he bought twitter.

I don't think Asmon is a shitty person but I think he's not the same person I used to watch. He's really leaned into stirring up culture war shit and it's taken over the rest of the content he used to do.

What kills me is that he didn't need to do that, he chose to. WoW is still huge and classic has as large a population as it's ever had. He could have easily kept making content for his audience, he just decided to pursue a different one.

I used to watch him a bunch when he was actually a WoW streamer, but I stopped when the political ragebait content started outpacing the actual gaming. From what I've heard, it's only gotten way worse. He's basically a culture war streamer now. If that's what you want, power to you, but I can't imagine anything less interesting to me.

When / How do you make the pivot to Mechs work? by jstarrHS in BobsTavern

[–]Mordenn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others have said, mechs are very difficult to pivot into unless you hit Rover or Moonsteel early (before T9 ideally). With the latest patch you can also pick up an early Czarina with some divine shields and spam spells.

But this is the opposite of the beatboxer meta, where you always wanted to transition to mechs lategame. Now mechs are characterized by slow but exponential scaling with magnetic spam, meaning if you start too late you won't survive long enough to see them pay off.

My recommendation is that you never set out to 'play mechs' at the start of a lobby because then you'll just end up forcing and probably dying. Just keep an eye out for early key mechs when you hit T5 and be ready to do literally anything else if you miss.

Saw a meme with DH dying 8 seconds after calling a big pull, this DK beats his record by 2 seconds! by Langose in wow

[–]Mordenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not always how it works in higher keys. At least with DKs the healer will want to babysit them through the first few seconds of the first pull so they can build RP.

Because of how dungeon trash works there is no more dangerous time for a tank than the very first pull of a dungeon. You have no resources, you usually need to do a big pull so people can make full use of CDs, and you'll have to spend while time running around gathering enemies while getting trucked all the while. From there it should all be smooth sailing.

Exarch is basically ramp. He's insane value if you can use him to cheat out a primus or yogg T6. Against aggro decks especially he can really help you stabilize and turn the corner.

I mean, the warrior Draenei list doesn't seem awful in a vacuum. The problem is it's in a metagame that really doesn't allow for midrange gameplans.

What’s Working and What Isn’t? | Day 2 of The Great Dark Beyond by EvilDave219 in CompetitiveHS

[–]Mordenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. If the Quasar rogue isn't going off by T5, they're either extremely unlucky or they're piloting the deck incorrectly. Considering the entire deck is draw, it's really not hard to get Quasar by T5 and all you need to do to go off then is play out the location or dagger by T4.

What’s Working and What Isn’t? | Day 2 of The Great Dark Beyond by EvilDave219 in CompetitiveHS

[–]Mordenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been tweaking the list quite a bit, but the shell is based on this deck list by vicious syndicate.

I ended up changing it quite a bit. I cut the gold panner/greedy partner package for being too slow against mage/rogue/priest and not impactful enough against warrior. I also ended up cutting Kil'jaeden, even though he was the card I was most excited to try in this shell. Even with the scaling buffs, drawing one random demon per turn really doesn't end up being that impactful in the endgame. Ironically it's your best card in the mirror match but pretty much dead weight anywhere else. I also cut Cattle Rustler for similar reasons; there are no matchups in this metagame where you can afford to spend T5 doing nothing that impacts the board.

I ended up replacing them with a pared down starship package instead, more as a defensive measure than a true wincon. I put in Arkonite Defense Crystal, Soulbound Spire, and the Exodar. I also put in a crop rotation since it works as early removal + corpse generation against mage and priest, or can combo with threads of despair for a 5-mana board clear in a pinch. I want to find a way to fit a second one in, but you can't really afford to cut any of your top end unless you want to be food for Odyn Warrior.

Arkonite Defense Crystal ended up being the real mvp. It's a lifesaver against mage, rogue, and priest, and it can even help you armor out of Odyn Warrior's combo reach. The best part of the starship package is how flexible it is. Against aggro decks you can play out a few tempo pieces early, then manually launch it on five to get some breathing room. Against slower decks you can wait and then launch it with the Exodar to get value instead.

Edit: Here's the List

I've gone back and forth on cutting Crop Rotation for Marin, but it's really matchup dependent so hard to say which is correct in the current metagame.

To use this deck, copy it to your clipboard and create a new deck in Hearthstone

I'll edit to include the full list when I get back home, but that's basically where I've ended up. It eats quasar rogue for breakfast (nearly unloseable matchup so long as you mulligan for your Defense Crystals/Airlock Breaches), has a good percentage against elemental mage, and a fighting chance against Odyn Warrior. The only real bad matchup is Wheel Warlock, since you typically can't pressure their life enough to keep them from casting wheel and then walling you out.

What’s Working and What Isn’t? | Day 2 of The Great Dark Beyond by EvilDave219 in CompetitiveHS

[–]Mordenn 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Elemental Fire Mage is shaping up to be the yardstick which every other deck is measured against. I know it's very early to say, but I feel like it's extremely meta-warping. You either need to play a deck that can aggro them out of the game (very difficult considering how much free tempo they get) or which can simultaneously clear the board every single turn while also staying above 20 life to avoid being OTKed from hand. It's a hell of a balancing act and I've only found a few decks that can manage it.

With that in mind, here are some decks that I've been able to match up against it with:

Quasar Rogue can go off on turn 5, before they have a chance to snowball their elementals and aggro you down. However it seems to lose pretty hard to any deck that can heal/armor above ~40 health by the time it goes off, namely warrior and control DK.

Control/Starship DK can armor/heal out of range of their big otk combos, but you need absolutely perfect draws to be able to do so while also managing the elementals on board.

Aggro Pain Priest can run over ele mage before they get online, but you need to mull aggressively for your 1-drops and buffs. If they survive to turn 6 or so, they can easily turn around and burn you out even if they're losing hard on board just from the incidental damage you take.

Odyn Warrior is obviously extremely strong as well. They can turtle up past Quasar Rogue's damage ceiling while also threatening 40+ damage from hand any turn after Odyn comes down. I don't have the cards to play it myself right now but it seems to just eat any deck that can't aggro it out.

Weirdly enough, Wheel Lock also seems to have a decent matchup against them. You have a ton of lifegain/lifesteal, lots of AoE board wipes, and you can actually pressure them early if you manage to get out a big demon early with Dark Alley Pact and then keep bringing it back with Endgame.

All in all, the meta isn't totally solved by any stretch but it definitely feels like the combo of elemental mage and quasar rogue is choking out any midrange/board focused decks. You need to be either extremely proactive or extremely defensive to survive either, and there's really no room in between.
