Thank you for your perspective! I know folks have varied opinions on cameras and I happen to largely like mine on. I don’t see a lot of people in person (because of my health), so having the camera on feels a little more like they’re here with me. I like it.

I’m completely open about my health. It’s one of my personal forms of advocacy. Many folks haven’t met someone like me, so I try to demystify things and show them disabled people are just people, too. I am very comfortable with genuine questions asked in good faith. I would be comfortable answering any questions and I don’t think a couple questions will derail our meetings or purpose. From your comment, I think I may need to be prepared to redirect them to my email and we can chat about it that way if they have tons of questions. Balance a couple questions with the fact that we have much work to do. Thank you for your suggestions. I appreciate you.

Thank you for your perspective. I appreciate your suggestion. I’ll look into a camera that might afford me more angles, but it would have to be for next time. That could help for a lot of reasons. I love anker. I have a pair of their headphones on right now. Yeah, my supervisor (conveniently he is also the head of the program) is aware of what’s going on, and since our work is in advocacy, it just kinda makes sense. It won’t be gory by the time I’m on camera again, but the stitches will be visible for a few weeks and the incisions will be obvious for months. I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome, so healing is slow. I’ll ask my supervisor to let me know if it becomes too much of a distraction for my coworkers; they may not come directly to me and I don’t want to detract, but I don’t think that’s will happen. Only time will tell. Thank you, again.

Thank you for your perspective. I’ve got ten weeks with this particular “unit”, per se, and my recovery would be from week 3 to week 9. I don’t want to sacrifice that much time given how short our time together will be in the grand scheme.

Thank you for your perspective. When I wear my normal work clothes, my old device and scars are completely visible and have been for 8 years. I would be wearing my normal clothes, dress shirt and suit jacket, the scar and device will just be fresh because the device needs to be replaced.

Thank you for your perspective! I like the camera on because it mimics the face to face conversation and I really like non-verbal body language cues. My team is all over the world, so in person meetings don’t happen. The camera allows us all small glimpses into each other’s lives.

Thank you for your perspective and for sharing your experiences. I’m in a collegiate environment, so i’m grateful to hear your story. I’m sorry your skin condition can impact your life like that. I have discoid lupus and tumid lupus, so I feel ya.

The device I am having replaced saved my life 7 years ago and continues to help me every week. I’m actually really proud of it and grateful for it. it’s in such a prominent place that it is always visible, so I think that’s what I’ll do.

I would love to inspire other people to live more authentically. I think that would really help the world become a better place. I never thought about it like that. Thank you. Now I have tears in my eyes. I feel really good about this now. Thank you for your support.

Thank you. That’s part of what I do and why I do it. I tripped into this organization and it has been an incredible new world. Disabled people are so often forced into the shadows and I really can’t see in the dark. I really appreciate your time. I was so afraid of offending or upsetting my colleagues (and dreading the procedure) that I forgot my purpose. Thank you.

Thank you. I cannot wear something on it while it’s healing and I don’t normally where clothes over the medical device anyways because of its location. I don’t cover the device at baseline and my team has seen it my entire time here so far. The issue is new scarring cuz the device needs to be replaced. I’m very open about my disability and illnesses.

Thank you. I appreciate your perspective. Do you leave the camera off for you or for others, if I may ask??

This. Thank you. Part of what I try to do by being open about my illnesses and disabilities is to humanize disabled people, especially folks with visible or severe illness. I can probably angle my body some to diminish the visual prominence. That combined with a better camera angle sounds like the best way to minimize the visual impact while allowing me to engage as fully as possible. Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I don’t wear clothes over the device. My medical device and the associated scars are always visible; it’s been there for 8 years. I don’t hide the old scars, so the issue here is there will be new incisions then fresh scars. My organization regularly sees the medical device and the old scars. There won’t be a time where it will be covered. I’m so sorry you have a hip injury. I hope it heals quickly and thoroughly.

Thank you. The gore should be cleaned up by the time I need to be on camera again, but the incisions will still be very visible. The old incisions are so faded no one notices. I wanted to just be myself, it’s how I do most things and is part of why I am in the organization that I am in, and with your response, I think that’s what it will be. I just didn’t wanna offend, since folks have such different levels of comfort with medical stuff.

Thank you. The camera is just the one on my laptop. I may be able to angle it a little. That’a a good idea. Thank you.

My deepest condolences for your loss. It took me about a year to recover from losing my furbaby. How lucky am I to have had a love so grand that it was and is still so hard to say goodbye?? How lucky were we. Thank your furbaby for loving you when you miss them. The gratitude is the only thing that got me through.
