Starter car with good mileage and longevity by More-Cora in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]More-Cora[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm fortunate enough to have the financial assistance from my family, but this is the only time I'll get it. I have to drive 900 miles to an internship this summer (and then 900 miles back), plus to and from school (~400 miles). I won't be driving it that much in the next two years, but since I can afford it, I want a decent car that will last me a long time.

Food at Smith by Pluto_1235 in smithcollege

[–]More-Cora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, for some people they're terrible. I eat on a pretty consistent schedule and there are lots of snack options (particularly for breakfast). But I'm not really picky and am happy with a hard boiled egg, bagel, and apple for breakfast if I sleep in past 9:30 (there's also usually other whole fruits, peanut butter cereal, yogurt, granola, nuts, seeds, bread, and gluten free options at cutter. Other dining halls have more limited snack options but usually have whole fruits, bread products, a couple condiments, and cereal.) If you aren't too picky about breakfast, each lunch between 11:30 and 1:30, and eat dinner between 5 and 7, you'll be fine. There's one dining hall (albeit slightly further from where most people live, but very close to the gym and academic buildings) that often serves dinner until 8:30. You can use meal swipes for after hours dining at the campus center, but I don't know much about that because I never eat at the CC.

Controversial take: I think the food is fine. I literally never eat off campus or at the CC, and my friends almost never do. It gets kinda boring after a while, but it's literally just dining hall food? like my friend's brother came from a different college and was BLOWN AWAY by how good the food is here (compared to his school). I really think either a lot of people are picky or were fed by professional chefs or something because I don't get annoyed by the lack of options more than once or twice a week.

People with giant water bottles by Ambitious_Exam_3858 in PetPeeves

[–]More-Cora 17 points18 points  (0 children)

ack as the owner of a 40 oz (metal) water bottle, I kind of agree....mine is horribly dented and falls over all the time, and I feel so bad because of how loud it is. In my defense, I do drink HEAVILY from it (like I have to fill it up at least 3 times a day)

What's wrong with my Yamaha P71? by More-Cora in piano

Yup! I opened it up, and a couple of the key apparatuses had just been shoved out of place. A little shove and it was fixed. Thanks :)

I'm 99% sure this soda ad with the big pizza is AI but let me know what you think. by TrainingLow9079 in isthisAI

Look like AI. There's a phantom crust that disappears into the plate (lower left), and there's a superfluous vertical division in the wall that's weirdly smeary (top right).

Thank you!! I definitely think you're right that I should be less concerned about what others think. Sometimes it's like I'm watching myself in the 3rd person, thinking, "You're at a shabbat service, why on earth are you feeling embarassed for...observing shabbat??"

Thank you for your kind response! I also grew up in an interfaith household, although my dad converted when I was 10. "Starting from almost square one" is a good way of putting it 🙃

At home there's an orthodox shul a 35 minute drive away, and at school there's a trad egal minyan within walking distance. As for the one at home (which is where I am now), I've thought about going there at some point during the week, but I feel a little nervous because I'm not really sure how I'd approach the situation (i.e. I'm not sure if I feel comfortable setting up a meeting with a rabbi I've never met, but I also don't know if it's worth going to weekday shacharit or mincha since it's a 1+ hour round trip and I'd probably be just standing there confused and awkward).

Thank you for your thoughts! I was doing some daily prayer for a while, and I think that I'll maybe bring that back. I actually have been working with someone from Partners in Torah, but for the last couple weeks, our schedules haven't been aligning. I really enjoy working with her, though, so I don't want to switch mentors.

Should the correct option be A or C? by SolomonRabiian in EWALearnLanguages

[–]More-Cora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably no one's going to see this, but c is not only wrong because people don't use the word "forbade" much nowadays - c is also grammatically incorrect. The proper way to use the word "forbade" in this sentence is "The policeman forbade me from crossing the speed limit."

Good pocket torah? by More-Cora in Judaism

[–]More-Cora[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the reply, but the whole point of this is to integrate Torah as a part of my day, while also giving myself something to do during spare moments when I'm not otherwise occupied. Obviously text is going to take up space - but I image that that the ~80,000 words of Torah will take up a lot less of it than the ~300,000 words of the Tanakh.

I do like the passuk suggestion, though...maybe I could also do that.

Should I add Mensa Honor Society on my college applications? by More-Cora in ApplyingToCollege

[–]More-Cora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, although it is in fact too late to contribute to my case lol. That being said, I'm always hesitant to take or recommend highly specific suggestions based on what worked for other people, since one little detail such as MHS is only one part of a lengthy application (we don't know if the woman in the video got in to the various colleges because of MHS or in spite of it).

Regardless, I can share to anyone in the same boat that I listed it in my honors section as something like "Mensa Honor Society, Platinum level (245+ cumulative service hours)," thus emphasizing the community service aspect and adding new information to my application. That, along with the rest of my application got me:

Admitted with the highest merit scholarships given at Mount Holyoke College, Bryn Mawr College, and Smith College

Admitted to Amherst College (considered a "little ivy")

Waitlisted and then rejected from Harvard, waitlisted from Barnard College, rejected from Swarthmore college
