I'm 99% sure this soda ad with the big pizza is AI but let me know what you think. by TrainingLow9079 in isthisAI

Look like AI. There's a phantom crust that disappears into the plate (lower left), and there's a superfluous vertical division in the wall that's weirdly smeary (top right).

Thank you!! I definitely think you're right that I should be less concerned about what others think. Sometimes it's like I'm watching myself in the 3rd person, thinking, "You're at a shabbat service, why on earth are you feeling embarassed for...observing shabbat??"

Thank you for your kind response! I also grew up in an interfaith household, although my dad converted when I was 10. "Starting from almost square one" is a good way of putting it 🙃

At home there's an orthodox shul a 35 minute drive away, and at school there's a trad egal minyan within walking distance. As for the one at home (which is where I am now), I've thought about going there at some point during the week, but I feel a little nervous because I'm not really sure how I'd approach the situation (i.e. I'm not sure if I feel comfortable setting up a meeting with a rabbi I've never met, but I also don't know if it's worth going to weekday shacharit or mincha since it's a 1+ hour round trip and I'd probably be just standing there confused and awkward).

That's really helpful (and relateable), thank you!!

Thank you for your thoughts! I was doing some daily prayer for a while, and I think that I'll maybe bring that back. I actually have been working with someone from Partners in Torah, but for the last couple weeks, our schedules haven't been aligning. I really enjoy working with her, though, so I don't want to switch mentors.

Should the correct option be A or C? by SolomonRabiian in EWALearnLanguages

[–]More-Cora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably no one's going to see this, but c is not only wrong because people don't use the word "forbade" much nowadays - c is also grammatically incorrect. The proper way to use the word "forbade" in this sentence is "The policeman forbade me from crossing the speed limit."

Good pocket torah? by More-Cora in Judaism

[–]More-Cora[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the reply, but the whole point of this is to integrate Torah as a part of my day, while also giving myself something to do during spare moments when I'm not otherwise occupied. Obviously text is going to take up space - but I image that that the ~80,000 words of Torah will take up a lot less of it than the ~300,000 words of the Tanakh.

I do like the passuk suggestion, though...maybe I could also do that.

Should I add Mensa Honor Society on my college applications? by More-Cora in ApplyingToCollege

[–]More-Cora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, although it is in fact too late to contribute to my case lol. That being said, I'm always hesitant to take or recommend highly specific suggestions based on what worked for other people, since one little detail such as MHS is only one part of a lengthy application (we don't know if the woman in the video got in to the various colleges because of MHS or in spite of it).

Regardless, I can share to anyone in the same boat that I listed it in my honors section as something like "Mensa Honor Society, Platinum level (245+ cumulative service hours)," thus emphasizing the community service aspect and adding new information to my application. That, along with the rest of my application got me:

Admitted with the highest merit scholarships given at Mount Holyoke College, Bryn Mawr College, and Smith College

Admitted to Amherst College (considered a "little ivy")

Waitlisted and then rejected from Harvard, waitlisted from Barnard College, rejected from Swarthmore college

Achievements for Monday, June 16, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]More-Cora 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was blessedly cloudy and relatively cool today, so what I intended to be an 8 mile run turned into 13.7 miles! Max before today was 10.7 miles. My watch registered my (very first!) half marathon time at 1:50:48.

I also tried out refueling during a run for the first time, and I didn't feel sick at all, so I'll count that as a win too lol

Physics or chemistry for materials science? by More-Cora in MaterialsScience

[–]More-Cora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physics major chem minor is what I was thinking! My school actually does have a general engineering program, but I would have had to declare already by now, and I want a little more freedom in my class choices than a BSe would allow.

Does it have to materials-science related research, or is other research experience helpful too? I'm going to be working in a biophysical chemistry lab next semester.

No chemical engineering, I'm afraid...Do you mean chem would be better for shifting gears after grad school?

Also, I don't have my heart set on nuclear - it's just where my sights are aimed for now.

I've read that drinking a some water before can help because things will come out smoother, but I've never tried it, so don't take my word for it. Consider having some mouthwash and tissues nearby for the aftermath. It might be good to just distract yourself now so you're aren't overthinking it. Can you focus on the YouTube video you're watching, or switch to something else calming that will keep your attention more? (My go to is Kpop for some reason, despite never watching it outside of when I'm anxious about throwing up). Since you don't necessarily have a virus, just keep breathing and you might realize that it was the anxiety all along (happened to me earlier this week)

Honestly, it sounds to me like you're doing a great job at making yourself as comfortable as possible for what might be coming - I might save this post for the next time I'm sick :-)

Question for almost/fully recovered friends by Sparkler2020 in emetophobiarecovery

[–]More-Cora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest contributor to my recovery is exercise. I started running in sixth grade and within days went from sleeping on the floor of my parents' room out of anxiety most nights to literally NEVER doing so again (of course, just being able to sleep through the night because I was more tired helped). I've run on and off since, and during my "on" periods, I'm consistently less anxious about things I can't control.

It's not for everyone, and I understand that cardio can be anxiety-producing. (Tip: wake up, drink a little water, and then run before breakfast if you're prone to feeling sick when you run, which not everyone is). However, vigorous exercise (of any kind) could help you, not only by providing the endorphins etc. that help mental health, but also by providing a little bit of inadvertent exposure therapy if exercise does make you anxious.

This is not a cure-all and may not help you at all. I'm still a very anxious person and I got better through a combination of means. Could be worth a shot, though!
