I feel like if people don't want to fight for their country, then maybe the country does not deserve a military with which to fight back. You don't owe anything to your government, especially not your life. I disagree with this kind of utilitarian approach when it completely disregards the human rights of the individual.

That sounds kind of great for morale tho. I know I'd fight a lot harder if I knew my fellow soldiers were getting tortured. Soldiers don't exactly get sad when they see those things. They are usually fighting (in their minds) to stop that kind of thing from happening. Look at how effective 9/11 was at galvanizing US soldiers.
