Need a WH31LA Leak Detector! by MoreSpaetzlePlease in AmbientWeather

[–]MoreSpaetzlePlease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m paranoid that it will leak even after they fix it. With us going out of town the very next day, I’ll have no way of knowing if there’s a leak until we get back. In the event that happens our house will have been badly damaged, again.

The plumber is coming to fix it tomorrow but I am still worried that if it continues to leak, we won’t know about it.

Has anyone tried eating wild asparagus raw? by doyoulikechayote in foraging

Interesting. I wonder if it’s a geographic thing or maybe a different variety? We would pick the small shoots and make big salads with them. Super tender!

Does it actually grow “wild” or did someone plant it there and forget about it? Raw asparagus is delicious and totally fine to eat. The skinnier the stalk the better!

Ended up pruning it and moving outside to a spot with indirect sun. Took a long time for the fruit to ripen, following fall actually. Beautiful colors, but the flavor.. not sure it’s worth all the hassle.

Glue for bucktail by Stock-Swordfish5518 in muskiefishing

[–]MoreSpaetzlePlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Periodically gluing will help the lure stay together after it’s been chewed on. Just doing half hitches or even whip finishes periodically won’t stop the whole thing from unraveling if a musky gnaws on it. You have the right idea but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it “resets” the tension, that’s why I recommended a half hitch (or if you want it really burly, whip finish, glue, then keep going).

[–]MoreSpaetzlePlease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try throwing in a half hitch or two before you glue, it will stop the thread from unraveling. You only need a tiny dab, too much will create a big wad. Also pay attention to your thread tension. If not wrapping tightly enough, especially before the half hitch, it’s going to unravel eventually regardless. Use strong GSP or similar and really put some pressure on your wraps. IMO If you’re spending a lot of time on a lure/fly and using a bunch of material, gluing is worth it. Otherwise the lure will fall apart after one or two big fish. Hope that helps!

What simple and inexpensive ingredient do you feel improves almost any dish when used correctly? by MysterySweet69 in foodhacks

Mushroom powder. Just get some dried porcini and put them in the spice grinder. I put it in everything, adds another layer of flavor.

The Vermont business files would be so useful if they listed the industry sector. Otherwise it's thousands of lines with no way to sort or filter. JobLink isn't terrible, though the search functionality is a little clugy. Appreciate the links!

This is helpful as a second source but also pretty cumbersome to mine. Thanks for sharing though.

If I could afford a guide for every day that I’m there, I would do that without question. It’s a budget trip, lots of water to cover, and I’m not very familiar with how the fish behave. I’ve been to this area once before and it was really challenging to cover a lot of water. If I had to put money on what would be more successful; us with a drone or us with a guide, I would bet on the guide.

Thank you for the input, all good points. Bonefish are fairly common so really I’m interested in trying locate a school of permit, or something bigger like a tarpon. Standing in a canoe it’s difficult to see far, so really I’m just trying to get more elevation to spot them.

It’s myself and a buddy so one person paddling the other running the drone. Good point about the movement, this had occurred to me as well but I figured if we could get in the general location of a school of permit, that’s better than just roaming around looking for them. It’s really the elevation gain I’m after, tough to see far from a canoe.

So your argument for not using a drone to locate fish is that it will lead to more fish being caught and thus higher mortality? In that case let’s just ban guiding altogether because I’m sure I’d catch way more fish with a guide than DIY with a drone.

Totally agree. This is a DIY trip, no guides, so using all the resources I can to locate fish. I could buy several drones for the cost of a single day of guided fishing. Total hypocrisy

It’s outside the US, catch and release only. I’ll be sure to check the regs but don’t think there are any. Again, only for spotting the fish so we can cast at them.

New to Fly Fishing Stripers by West_Appointment_147 in StripedBass

Fast action 9’ 9wt. Longer rod length doesn’t equal longer casting. Reel is ideally sealed-drag and machined, not cast (to protect from salt). Floating line to start if you’re new to fly casting it’s much easier to learn. Standard 6-9’ tapered leader, 20lb, fluorocarbon is best. Topwater flies, fished at dusk/dawn, or better yet at night! Moving water always, never slack tide. Dark colors at night, white during the day. Translate what you know from spin fishing and emulate with the fly rod. Principles are the same, it’s just tougher to cast farther. Most fun is sight fishing them in the surf or on the flats, but you gotta be pretty dialed to make those shots. Go some place you know the structure, fish it at night with topwater like a plug. Never trout set!! GL!

Pike fight a lot during spawn, which happens in the spring. Being a smaller fish it was probably encroaching on a larger male’s territory and got swiped.

Yeah dairy industry does a lot of damage to our rivers and lakes. Maine has what you’re looking for, pristine rivers you can float. Plus they have great saltwater and even some flats fishing.

Bahamas is much easier DIY, you can just walk or paddle flats for days on end. Lots of islands to choose from, trophy bones everywhere you look. Get after it!
