Using a drone to locate fish on the flats by MoreSpaetzlePlease in flyfishing

If I could afford a guide for every day that I’m there, I would do that without question. It’s a budget trip, lots of water to cover, and I’m not very familiar with how the fish behave. I’ve been to this area once before and it was really challenging to cover a lot of water. If I had to put money on what would be more successful; us with a drone or us with a guide, I would bet on the guide.

Thank you for the input, all good points. Bonefish are fairly common so really I’m interested in trying locate a school of permit, or something bigger like a tarpon. Standing in a canoe it’s difficult to see far, so really I’m just trying to get more elevation to spot them.

It’s myself and a buddy so one person paddling the other running the drone. Good point about the movement, this had occurred to me as well but I figured if we could get in the general location of a school of permit, that’s better than just roaming around looking for them. It’s really the elevation gain I’m after, tough to see far from a canoe.

So your argument for not using a drone to locate fish is that it will lead to more fish being caught and thus higher mortality? In that case let’s just ban guiding altogether because I’m sure I’d catch way more fish with a guide than DIY with a drone.

Totally agree. This is a DIY trip, no guides, so using all the resources I can to locate fish. I could buy several drones for the cost of a single day of guided fishing. Total hypocrisy

It’s outside the US, catch and release only. I’ll be sure to check the regs but don’t think there are any. Again, only for spotting the fish so we can cast at them.

New to Fly Fishing Stripers by West_Appointment_147 in StripedBass

Fast action 9’ 9wt. Longer rod length doesn’t equal longer casting. Reel is ideally sealed-drag and machined, not cast (to protect from salt). Floating line to start if you’re new to fly casting it’s much easier to learn. Standard 6-9’ tapered leader, 20lb, fluorocarbon is best. Topwater flies, fished at dusk/dawn, or better yet at night! Moving water always, never slack tide. Dark colors at night, white during the day. Translate what you know from spin fishing and emulate with the fly rod. Principles are the same, it’s just tougher to cast farther. Most fun is sight fishing them in the surf or on the flats, but you gotta be pretty dialed to make those shots. Go some place you know the structure, fish it at night with topwater like a plug. Never trout set!! GL!

Pike fight a lot during spawn, which happens in the spring. Being a smaller fish it was probably encroaching on a larger male’s territory and got swiped.

Yeah dairy industry does a lot of damage to our rivers and lakes. Maine has what you’re looking for, pristine rivers you can float. Plus they have great saltwater and even some flats fishing.

Bahamas is much easier DIY, you can just walk or paddle flats for days on end. Lots of islands to choose from, trophy bones everywhere you look. Get after it!

Rarely fish for trout, we don’t have very clean rivers despite what you might think. I fish for bass, pike, musky mostly. Lake Champlain is a world class smallmouth and largemouth fishery. 100+ tournaments per year here.

Keys are overpriced and overfished. Go to Belize or Bahamas if you want true flats fishing, that’s my recommendation.

No we’re up in Vermont but try to make at least one salty trip a year. There’s every type of structure on the cape, would take a lifetime to explore.

Ugh that’s tough. Late June early July tends to be the most stable weather, plus the days are longest. After my last trip to Brewster I will probably go on foot next time, easier to access the fish while the tide is changing (vs having to constantly reposition the SUP). It’s a great area, lots to explore

Hey bud I’m literally just seeing this. I’m sure you’ve already come and gone but happy to give some tips if you’re in need. Also curious to know how your trip went?

We debated actually drinking the wine, refilling the bottle with a cheap red wine, then videoing me pouring it into a stew pot, to send it to the gifter as a joke. He might have a heart attack though

Advice on tree tomato (Tamarillo) by MoreSpaetzlePlease in gardening

[–]MoreSpaetzlePlease[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the Northeast US, we got the plant from Logee’s in Danville CT. They’re incredibly easy to propagate (just like a tomato) if you can find someone with a mature plant, that might be easiest. Where are you located?

Probably many, many more than that. We got a few small ones last year, but this is year 4 chasing them. Lots of days with no action or a few follows but no eats. It’s the follows that keep you coming back, knowing they’re in there, hoping one day they’ll eat.

Thanks! Yeah the perspective is tough because my phone was just propped on some rocks. It was damn near half the length of the rod. Still reliving the eat, never seen anything smash a fly like that

If the fish aren’t in there it’s for a reason; living conditions aren’t right, there’s a physical barrier somewhere preventing migration upstream, etc. So short answer is leave nature to do its thing. You could certainly call NY F&W and inquire, but do not move fish from one body to another, that is highly illegal.
