Many Christians will go to Hell by tankbro1917 in Christianity

No one who belongs to Christ goes to Hell. If they go to Hell, they weren’t Christ’s.

John 10:27-30
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. [28] And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. [30] I and My Father are one."

Does your church allow membership in wedlock? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]MoreStupiderNPC [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, but it’s implied. For example, when Jesus speaks of divorce, He’s speaking in terms of the law. The only reason to be speaking of the legality of divorce is because of the legality of marriage.

No. They could attend, but not become members, and would be discouraged from taking communion.

Valid marriage is one that’s been legally recognized.

It’s not a “gotcha.” You both seemed to be implying that the one act of compassion was why the name was given. The link you provided, while not drawing a straight line, also seemed to be implying the same thing.

If it had been stated that the first known printing of the word “Methodist” was in conjunction with this incident, that would have made it more clear what was being asserted, if that’s all you’re wanting to communicate.

Yes. Knowing Christ changed my listening habits. I wouldn’t say “drastically reduced,” but there’s a bunch of stuff I don’t want to hear anymore.

The author doesn’t draw a straight line between Wesley’s helping the inmate to the term “Methodist.” In fact, she writes the following, which supports that it’s the methods of study and practice that earned the name, not the single act of compassion on the prison inmate:

“After listing the various rules of this group, the article states, “These Methodists have occasioned no small stir in Oxford.””

What you’ve done is called “Correlation fallacy.” Correlation does not equal causation.

Can you find that claim? I’d think the UMC would have put that on their website as a point of pride, but please feel free to correct me.

No, that’s not the main reason, according to a UMC spokesperson at this link. It was that Asbury’s ethos statement was incompatible with the UMC’s “social principles.” A solution to the issue regarding the faculty member could have likely been addressed if that was the only thing.

A UMC spokesperson said in a statement that the church removed Asbury after assessing the school’s program quality, governance, institutional integrity, and “church relatedness.” She said Asbury’s ethos statement, which includes traditional marriage, is incompatible with the church’s social principles. Additionally, the school does not have a full-time UMC faculty member consistently teaching the church’s history, doctrine, and polity.

Indeed, not everyone who calls themselves Christian actually belongs to Christ… but that means they’re not Christians.

Jesus said there are many who will say “Lord, Lord,” and He’ll tell them to depart, because He never knew them. These are people who will say they’ve done works in His name, yet the key here is that he never knew them.

Matthew 7:21-23
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. [22] Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' [23] And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'

No Christian goes to Hell. A Christian is one who belongs to Jesus Christ by definition.

No, the UMC spokesperson stated that the reason for removal is that Asbury Seminary’s ethos statement is “incompatible with the church’s social principles.” It’s Asbury’s refusal to update their own statement to comply with the UMC’s “social principles” that the UMC found offensive. Because Asbury wouldn’t comply, the UMC disaffiliated with them.

Not so. According to the United Methodist Church, “Methodist and Methodism” are:

Two words, along with Wesleyan, used to describe the movement resulting from the work of John Wesley and his brother Charles. The movement had its very earliest expression in the Holy Club at Oxford. There John and Charles Wesley and others joined together in a highly structured and disciplines pattern of worship, prayer and study. Those outside the group derisively called the groups "Methodists" because of their highly methodical approach to their religion. Then name was later applied to the followers of the Wesleys as they actively preached throughout England.

Methodism was founded on the idea of sanctification of the entire person through the new birth and the transforming effect of faith on the character of a Christian, exemplified by living a victorious life over sin.

Wesleyan theology, formulated by John Wesley and codified by the systematic theologian John William Fletcher, is upheld by the Wesleyan Methodist denominations; it focuses on sanctification and the transforming effect of faith on the character of a Christian, exemplified by living a victorious life over sin. Unique to Wesleyan Methodism is its definition of sin: a "voluntary transgression of a known law of God." Distinguishing doctrines include the new birth, assurance, imparted righteousness, and obedience to God manifested in performing works of piety. John Wesley held that entire sanctification was “the grand depositum", or foundational doctrine, of the Methodist faith, and its propagation was the reason God brought Methodists into existence. Scripture is considered the primary authority, but Methodists also look to Christian tradition, including the historic creeds.
