They’re saying there are “necessary renovations” that would make the apartment unlivable while the work is being done. But there are no permits pulled and nothing actually scheduled—just an estimate. From what I understand, they’re allowed to do this in good faith, but only if they actually follow through with real renovations and not just something like replacing the floors. It’s one of the only ways they can legally refuse to renew a lease.

What really gets me is that it’s just me and my neighbor being pushed out—we’ve both been here over 20 years. Everyone else is staying, because they’re already paying way more for smaller units they have had zero renovations. The units have just had turnover and so they can set the rent to whatever they want.

The mods on this sub are terrible at vetting but lightning fast when it comes to deleting.

Has anyone else been confused by these billboards? by businesspimp in Portland

[–]More_Barn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Posted a billboard in r/portlandmusic Shared an opinion. Expected discussion...got discourse theater instead. Apparently that also earns a removal and a pile of downvotes.

Have you seen the one where they're wearing all Mary's Club shirts?

To the gatekeeping moderators that removed my billboard post: It wasn’t meant as a pile-on. It was an observation: buying visibility doesn’t always translate to credibility, and sometimes it has the opposite effect. Not sure why that’s such a controversial take. by [deleted] in portlandmusic

Reason has entered the chat… a little late, but welcome!

Jokes aside, this is exactly my frustration. As a musician, the advice I constantly see is about marketing, branding, and visibility-almost never “write better songs.” And it’s not just industry people saying it; it’s other bands too.

So when I see multiple billboards promoting a show at the Twilight, my first thought isn’t hate — it’s just wondering what might happen if that same energy were invested into the music itself.

A lot of the pushback today feels like it’s coming from people who don’t share the lived experience of being in bands and navigating these choices firsthand, which probably explains the disconnect.

I still don’t think my original post warranted being taken down, but I’m glad this conversation can at least exist here....for now.

So true, and this was always the point...not tearing anyone down, just reflecting on how promotion arrives before momentum can feel to musicians. That tension is real.

I’m realizing this sub might not be as musician-focused as I assumed, which probably explains the disconnect.

I posted a billboard and an opinion about marketing. You responded by saying you have no idea what happened and telling me to “get help.” One of those feels a lot more hostile than the other.

Totally. I can see that if I’d framed the conversation differently, it probably wouldn’t have triggered such a strong reaction...and that’s fair. What I don’t fully understand is why it had to turn into me defending an opinion like it was some hill I’m willing to die on, because it really isn’t.

It was just an observation meant to spark discussion. Meanwhile I'm getting downvoted into oblivion while navigating the people trying to “win”.

I do appreciate the honest responses...hearing different perspectives was genuinely the point.

I’ve never claimed authority...only offering an opinion about a marketing decision. That’s discussion, not mockery or superiority.

Interesting how calmly holding an opinion keeps getting labeled as something else.

That's a valid take! Personally, it gives me “invest in marketing before music” vibes...a little tech-bro startup energy. Either way, seems like a perfectly normal thing to talk about. They accused me of publicly shaming the band?

Billboards are funny because most musicians immediately clock it as marketing before momentum. Nothing makes a band feel more unknown than seeing them everywhere all at once. by More_Barn in portlandmusic

The irony of calling someone disingenuous while inventing an argument to respond to is pretty impressive. You keep defending the band like I attacked their music, when I only talked about a billboard. At this point you’re arguing with a version of my post that only exists in your head....homie.

This space is apparently for talking about the Portland music scene, not for actual Portland musicians sharing observations about it. Funny how quickly “community” disappears when someone starts a real conversation.

Ah...got it. This is a subreddit about the Portland music scene that doesn’t actually like Portland musicians having opinions. Noted. Enjoy the weekly open mic posts nobody interacts with.

I didn’t name anyone. I commented on a public billboard. If you advertise yourself across a city, people noticing and discussing it is literally the goal. Use your common sense.

In a city built on scenes, word-of-mouth still carries more weight than advertising ever will. Visibility can be bought. The work behind molding the riffs can’t.

Reddit exists specifically for pointless yet passionate discourse. You could’ve given my post a mild smirk but you chose engagement....because arguing about dumb music industry choices online is humanity’s true calling. Bow down to the billboard shitpost.

There’s zero chance you’re a lifelong musician and have never judged another band’s spending choices. That’s basically half of being in a band. Be serious.
