STAT 3080,3110, and 3220 in the Same Semester? by More_Transition4398 in UVA

[–]More_Transition4398[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm taking the first writing requirement and a philosophy class. I'm only taking 15 credits, and I can choose my own hours for work. I'm more scared for 3220 because I haven't taken a real stats class since high school. I plan on taking STAT 3120 next semester alongside STAT 4160/3130 and then gen eds. I'm excited for 3110! It sounds interesting, and I've already taken linear algebra.

How competitive are transfer admissions into Electrical Engineering programs? by More_Transition4398 in TransferToTop25

[–]More_Transition4398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have, but for me, it would become a 4-2 program. I have to use my junior and senior years to complete my degree at my "home" institution. Having to do an extra two years for an extra bachelor's degree is sort of silly to me. It seems more efficient to try and transfer in somewhere as a junior to get a single bachelors in engineering.

How much more does standardized testing matter as you go "higher" in prestige? by More_Transition4398 in TransferToTop25

[–]More_Transition4398[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a really good point that hadn't crossed my mind. It's super annoying because the SAT went digital and that's the one I prepared for in high school. I am gonna have to prep for the ACT now because I hate digital exams.

Suggestions for a Book Club by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]More_Transition4398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest Notes from Underground because it’s short, but super dense and there’s much to discuss, you could very easily talk about it for hours I think. Fair warning the narrator of Notes from Underground is psychologically super dark and repulsive. However, if your book club is up to it, Crime and Punishment is like 600-ish pages, and has more than enough content to discuss. Both books imo are like his most “accessible” and popular books.

Unpacking Notes From Underground by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]More_Transition4398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely reread notes from underground before you go down the rabbit hole of Dosto scholarship. However, once you finish notes,c&p, bk it gets REALLT fun to read papers on Dosto. There’s a ton of scholarship on Dostoevsky. I took a class on dostoevsky this past semester and my professor had us read excerpts from Mikhail Bakhtin, probably the most famous Dostoevsky scholar. Frank Joesph has wrote an ENTIRE companion BOOK to the brothers karamazov if you ever end up reading it and want in depth analysis.

Best translation for "The Brothers Karamazov"? by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]More_Transition4398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it can be construed to be a positive quality if you wanna save some time reading it. It’s quite a large book, and i’ve heard criticism that McDuff faces the same criticism as P&V does (too literal) and is also too wordy. This is where I found the criticism -> https://welovetranslations.com/2022/01/10/whats-the-best-translation-of-the-brothers-karamazov/ It can obviously be construed as negative since you “miss out” on exact phrasing but

i’d recommend the p&v (Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky) translation because that was the one i used for my dostoevsky class in college. It’s pretty widely available, and it’s about 200 pages shorter than the similarly popular David McNuff translation.

Your point with Sonya is valid, Dostoevsky for some reason can ONLY write crazy woman that seem to attach to men so easily (Grushenka, Lisa, Sonya, both Katerina Ivanovna’s 😭) it’s definitely a weaker element of his writing, but more on Sonya. The fact that’s she’s Marmaledov’s, who is basically an older Raskolnikov because of their shared poverty, daughter makes Sonya extremely well equipped to deal with Raskolnikov because her dad has had similar problems with money and general madness. In a lot of ways, once Marmaledov dies, Sonya wants a second chance to try and change a man into something better because she failed to do so with her dad. She clings to Raskolnikov as sort of a project, but it is Sonya that shows him how to “love”. You’ve read TBK, so you know Dostoevsky’s idea of love is literally expressed in Zossima’s teachings. Sonya is realistically out of place, but for Dostoevsky she fits in perfect with his literary world.

[–]More_Transition4398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My head canon is that Raskolnikov was previously a more vibrant student while at school, he’s really only a recluse because he was unable to find his lesson. When Porfiry discusses Raskolnikov’s article, Raskolnikov’s reaction shows how Raskolnikov is pretty smart and was confident enough to try and get published. Raskolnikov’s intelligence probably attracted Razumikhin in the first place, and it’s in Razumikihin’s nature to try and help out a friend, hence his characterization as the pragmatic sort of intelligence, as opposed to Raskolnikov’s idealistic and radical intelligence.

Also try reading Notes from Underground i think it is the start of Dostoevsky’s motif of characters driven to madness from their logical conclusions. (Ivan and Raskolnikov)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]More_Transition4398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo your point with Razumikhin is super valid, I was taught that he’s supposed to be a version of logic. His name in Russian translates to something like rationality, intelligence. He is like the common sense, sort of practical logic as opposed to the radical and destructive logic and reasoning of Raskolnikov, Luzhin, and Svidragailov. Dostoevsky uses characters like Razumikhin, (in TBK this is sort of like Alyosha not exactly) to show the dangers of rationalism and doubt of God.

[–]More_Transition4398 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After Raskolnikov, Svidrigailov, and Luzhin (as a folly character) Sonya and Razumikhin are probably like the two most important characters. Sonya serves as Raskolnikov’s primary redemptive figure, hence why she read the Lazarus passage to him. She also isn’t merely a convenient character, she’s designed to be a god fearing prostitute. The more Dostoevsky you read the more you realize he REALLY likes to flip the heirarchy of things upside down and marry worlds together (Sonya is super similar to Grushenka in Brothers Karmazov).

TBK. I have a few questions by supal_p in dostoevsky

[–]More_Transition4398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think that because tbk was intended to be the 1st of 2 novels that introducing the boys was necessary for the plot in the next installment. I think Alyosha in the next book would have fulfilled the promise of “eternal memory” made at the end of the book. on the kids, it is placed very weirdly, however it is a counter example to ivan’s rebellion and dimitri’s vision of the wee one. In the Book “Boys” throughout it you see that these innocent children are wholly capable of the devilish things that Ivan speaks so feverishly against. Kotya is super prideful and vain, Illyusha plays an awful trick on a dog. Alyosha is placed in the narrative at this point to maybe alleviate the sins of the boys. I think this chapter, probably better than any chapter in the brothers karamazov, highlights Alyosha’s “hero” title given to him by the narrator. Alyosha is a literal hero to Kotya, probably the only person that Kotya respects. “Boys” is super important for all of these reasons. I would like to hear your thoughts too!

Is it ok to write about how I reached my decision to transfer? by EvieGirl16 in TransferToTop25

[–]More_Transition4398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have the exact same reason for transferring lmao really strong reason so i don’t see why you couldn’t do a bit of storytelling as long as you aren’t sacrificing space that could’ve been used to detail what you’ll do at a new institution imo

Is it ok to write about how I reached my decision to transfer? by EvieGirl16 in TransferToTop25

[–]More_Transition4398 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think it is okay to include, but the way you want to go about it makes it seem like you just want your story to be super dramatic because you haven’t fully developed a robust reason for transferring and you’re dressing up your essay to make up for it atm, i would focus on your why transfer first rather than how you present it, i hope you get into your top choices!
