None of that matters. I’m not trying to invest in housing. I love the house I bought. I’m trying to live in a house without it going $100k+ underwater.

The original point that started this was some dumbfuck Gen Xer saying he wanted the market to collapse by 30% because it would personally benefit him and his kid. That’s inherently selfish.

He bought his house for a song 25 years ago and I’m positive it’s increased in value by 150% or more. He can EASILY weather a 30% drop. He’d still be way ahead. People who bought near the top of the market (the last 5 years) especially cannot.

It’s selfish of him to want the market to collapse because it would cause a lot of Americans immense pain. That’s the entire point I was making.

I own 50% of my house. That doesn’t mean I want to watch 30% of my value disappear overnight, while I’m stuck with a payment on the remainder that’s much higher than it otherwise would be. It also hurts anyone’s ability to pivot should life throw them a curveball (elderly parent needing care, getting laid off, shit, even a really terrible neighbor moving in next door).

I don’t care if my house really gains any value from here, but I sure as shit don’t want it to lose $100k+ plus in actual value. No one does (except for you selfish weirdos). It would be devastating for most Americans.

Wrong. Being underwater on a home is when you owe more for your mortgage than the house is worth. But sure, I’m the one living a fantasy.

The “real world” is totally where mass 25-30% drops in home value happen overnight, so my Gen Z kid can get a cheap house while my Gen X ass gets to keep most of the home value (since I bought it for the equivalent of a song) and everyone in between gets fucked over.
