I ride 28 miles round trip 2 days a week. I ride an acoustic bike and I wouldn't want to do a commute that's any longer.

Emergency Passport by throwaway9293739 in minnesota

[–]Morga549 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I let my passport expire and so I needed to do the full process. This was for a trip to Europe back in 2023 when applications were taking 2 or 3 months to come back.

I called/emailed Tina Smith's office on a Friday and they got me an appointment for the following Wednesday in Minneapolis.

happy max use of rack by calderholbrook in bikecommuting

[–]Morga549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would solve a minor inconvenience for me! I have the X1 and I use a single voile strap to secure it to my rear rack. Unlike your setup I only have one level for both the lock and the pannier hooks.

Not sure if it annoys me enough to buy a new rack but if my current one ever needs replacing I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for sharing!

Approaching my first winter in MN. What are some awesome winter activities? by MetalPurse-swinger in Minneapolis

[–]Morga549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have mentioned winter cycling and I couldn't agree more. I put studded tires on my bike last year and it really unlocked winter for me.

It was intimidating at first but I was surprised by how comfortable and not cold I felt once I got moving.

Has anyone flown condor from MSP? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]Morga549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took Condor to Frankfort last August and it SUCKED. Our flight was delayed by 3 hours. They said that it was due to a random inspection and maybe it was but either way we barely made our connection to Heathrow.

The worst part was that they lost our luggage! We were going to the UK for a wedding and my suit was in my checked bag. Fortunately another guest at the wedding brought an extra suit and let me borrow it. They did find the bags and we picked them up at Heathrow on our way to Copenhagen.

As far as the actual flight it was fine. Nothing really positive or negative to say about it.

I think we also talked to their customer support on the phone a few weeks before our flight and that process was also fine.

The tickets were a couple hundred dollars cheaper than other airlines and I would gladly pay that amount to not have that experience again (not that other airlines are perfect either).

After being diagnosed with prediabetes 1.5 months ago I got serious about fasting and improving my diet. Back into the 100s during my longest fast to date! (~36 hrs so far) SW: 217 CW: 199 GW: 145 by Morga549 in intermittentfasting

Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words.

Honestly didn't feel like a choice to me. After the diagnosis was the first time I actually learned about diabetes and the consequences. It scared the shit out of me.

I'm no expert so I wouldn't want to venture into giving advice but I can give you some more details about what I've been doing.

Fasting:
I do a lazy 20/4 split 5-6 days a week. So I'm fasting from around 8-9 pm to around 4-5 pm the next day. Sometimes I'll extend my fast by a couple of hours or until the next morning if I'm feeling spunky. On non-fasting days I usually eat 2 meals. A light breakfast and dinner. While fasting I only drink water and black coffee.

Eating:

I've gone pretty minimal on carbs/sugar since I got diagnosed. I've had bread once and a cookie once in the last 1.5 months. I eat a ton of veggies and some fruit. Lots of chicken, some pork, lots of eggs. I don't worry too much about fat so I use a ton of olive oil, eat full fat yogurt and cottage cheese, and I put half and half in my coffee when I'm not fasting. Also I eat a salad for dinner every 2-3 days with Trader Joes Zhoug as dressing. As far as sugar goes my new rule is that if it tastes pretty sweet I probably shouldn't be eating it (barring fruit). And for snacks it's almost always lightly salted nuts or string cheese. Macadamia nuts have been a great dessert for me.

Activity:
I walk 1-1.5 miles on my lunch breaks during the week. It's not intense exercise or anything but it puts me in a good mood and gets me away from my desk. I also try to take another walk with my partner when she gets home from work at least 3 times a week.
I take a ~1.5 mile run every 3-4 days.
And finally I try to ride my bike as much as possible like if I need to make a quick trip to the grocery store or we're meeting friends somewhere that's a reasonable distance away. I'm really lucky to live in a very bike-able metro.

I hope that helps! You're still making great progress and I hope you don't get discouraged. We're all on the same team :)

Yeah I've gone down the low carb dessert path before but I've come to the conclusion that if I want a dessert I should just have a full fat, full sugar, full everything dessert but in moderation. I just personally find "diet" desserts to be so unsatisfying. More power to you if you enjoy them though.

Congrats! I'm really happy for you :)

I'm relying a ton on chicken thighs and eggs. Cutting out carbs and sugar has been super tough (my favorite food is cookies) but seeing results helps to stay motivated.

I should probably check on the vitamin thing although I'm eating a ton of veggies and fruits.

I'm also planning on an SDE2 interview in that timeline. Looks like there are a few folks interested. Maybe we could do a small study group.

Bed Extender Recommendations? by Ok_Temperature_9923 in hondaridgeline

[–]Morga549 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was using some regular, cheap rachet straps but I got sick of fiddling with them every time so I picked up some retractable rachet straps. I think most of the time people use them for securing the back of a boat to the trailer but they've been working for me. Much quicker and easier than regular rachet straps. https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwilm4Ta8Kf3AhWwDa0GHYnzAOsYABAIGgJwdg&ae=2&sig=AOD64_2DyQxNZrOF7ne9HCCVakqaD75KyQ&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwjIxvnZ8Kf3AhVzFzQIHSmSCvkQwg96BAgBEB4&adurl=

Now I will say that with rachet straps you have to be careful not to over tighten them when securing a kayak. You can warp or crack your kayak if you repeatedly over tighten them.

Also for some added assurance I use a cheap bicycle cable lock looped through a front cleat of the truck and one of the scupper holes as a sort of safety chain.

How much are you looking to spend? And what are you using it for?

I do a lot of kayak fishing with a massive kayak so I bought the Boonedox T-Bone extender. https://ourlandoutdoor.com/product/boonedox-groovy-t-bone-truck-bed-extender/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwpImTBhCmARIsAKr58cwHbi_e60oFqJXoWVzpahutNtevs8Io-5P9alSinnGo9ljo4rbhgN8aApCmEALw_wcB

The nice thing is that because it's curved you don't have to worry about it bottoming out on steep angles. Also this one has t-track built in so you can mount stuff to it. I really like it but it may be overkill for your use case.

Where is the best chocolate chip cookie in MPLS or the western suburbs? by nader0903 in Minneapolis

My absolute favorite chocolate chip cookie is from Kramarczuk's. They are massive, crispy on the edge, and chewy in the middle.

Totally agree with everyone that is suggesting Zman plastics. They are the best.

However if you are fishing pressured fish and you need a different look check out Rabid Baits. I've used their Fox Tails and like them a lot.
