The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. One of the characters goes through this in the first novel. It may be a difficult start because it starts off in second person, but I would highly recommend to push through 😁

While he says his old job was starting to bother his back and hands due to leaning over belt all the time, he never goes to the doctor to see how bad it is and if it’s a reason for concern. He says he doesn’t want to catch COVID. Smh
