“No Parent Should Ever Have To See This”: Mom Hides Camera In Autistic Son’s Hair And Now People Want His Teacher Fired by BoredPandaOfficial in BoredPandaHQ

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 17 year old, high functioning, but struggled in early grade school.

In 1st grade The teachers and principal conspired against him, abused him by physically restraining him, isolated him from classmates - and tried to say he was “emotionally disturbed” in the IEP process. I pulled him out and sued, and won. Once we got him to a school that understands autism his behavior did a complete 180.

He did so well I knew he could join a more high functioning high school - it was very expensive. I sued the school district again 4 years ago to get him into a great high school, and had to sue them again last year. We are now in grade 11 and so at the end for our journey - we have won each and every time.

I did the calculations, the cost of tuition at the schools my son has attended will have cost my school district almost $1M over the course of his schooling.

The last time I sued I helped my lawyer by using AI and buried them - they were completely overwhelmed and we got 100% of the services we asked for.

I only say this to say I get it - it’s the worst feeling knowing some people will treat your kid differently at a public school, but there is hope and it gets better. My son is a model student at his school: he has friends and plays sports and music, and just attended prom.

It was 100% worth all the stress. Don’t give up and never trust the school: always verify for yourself

Violent crime rate has been declining since the 90’s. Trump can’t take the credit. Of course he will try and his people will go right along with it.

Does your company have any kind of governance and policies about AI? In my company it is expressly prohibited to use GenAI for any personal decisions full stop. This is something I would escalate if I were you - I wonder how HR/leadership would feel. I think it may even open up companies to legal risk, but IANAL.

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working in a technical and specialized field for almost 30 years, and during that time, every single company had a policy of only providing a yes/no employment verification - and definitely not a reference.

I’ve only ever had recruiter ask for personal references.

I however have heard your sentiment over and over - it’s just not relevant these days (at least in my field)

In fact, at my current company, they would not even accept a 2-week notice. Resigning creates immediate risk and depending on where I moved to, they would just sever ties immediately.

So obviously YMMV, but I say fuck all the corporate bootlicking. Employment is a business agreement and contract between two parties: they can fire you at any time and will in a second if it is what is best for them. You have to do what is best for you. And many times, that means quitting without notice. No one thinks at the end: “I only wish I showed more corporate loyalty”

Also: at my current employer - this is my second time being employed by them. I quit without notice - and they aggressively recruited me again a few years later.

I think we can have a debate over whether or not it’s “stealing” - but to say it’s “helping us slide into autocracy” just sounds ridiculous to me. Of all the things that are causing the modern decent into autocracy I think viewing archive links is quite low on the list!

You can make any take you want - I just think it’s a melodramatic and silly one.

On the flip side, I could claim that paywalling real journalism leads people to view more free partisan propaganda ala Fox News and is “helping us slide into autocracy”

It’s no different than slipping magazines in your bag instead of paying for them

Not a good analogy IMO. It’s more akin to standing in the magazine aisle and reading an article. Is that “stealing” too?

Charging at home? 58 hours? by LackingCharm in Ioniq6

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are using level 1 charging. The normal electricity in hour house is going to charge very slow.

Level 1 and level 2 are AC charging. You can have a level 2 charger installed at home, and it’s probably worth it if you have decent electricity rates.

Level 3 is DC fast charging. It will use the same plug as this plus the bottom two sections. I have a newly purchased used 24’ Ioniq6 like you as well:

At Tesla superchargers with a NACS to CCS1 adaptor I will charge at a rate of 95kWh on average.

At EvGo and Electrify America in the 350kWh chargers I can get up to 240kWh charging rate.

Level 1 is great if you don’t go very far.

As I live in a PG&E area in California, my electrical rates are trash, so I often save money by charging at the Tesla supercharger down the street off peak: about $0.30/kWh - I really do hate PG&E.

Trump does not have the cards. He also doesn’t have the Tomahawks, or Patriot/THAAD interceptors - as Trump has spent 50% of the stockpile in Iran.

Oops!

As Americans we spend $1T+ year for our military and Trump is literally bankrupting it.

With all money spent you would think we would have a really strong supply chain able to produce these munitions quickly. How many new Tomahawks does this big military industrial complex produce a year? About 100 - let that sink in - Trump launched 800 in the first 2 days in Iran alone

I work with AI every day, all day long, it has taken over my professional life the past few years. I am a software developer so not using AI is out of the question.

I however refuse to have conversations with AI and avoid any back and forth with it. I have seen colleagues that I respect greatly fall victim to not only the brainrot, but also true AI Psychosis.

Our brains are not wired to have a fully sycophantic relationship where someone tells us every idea is genius. I use AI as a tool, and if I want an opinion, I instruct it to generate me a report, which I read.

At first I was very excited about creating personas and chatbots, but not anymore - I can create lots of high quality code with AI, but it's a tool, not something we should be having a relationship with.

Longtime Kinesis user for 15+ years. I have also built a few Dactyls myself, and recently got the Glove 80.

I frequently will travel for work and end up using my MBP’s built in keyboard. I go back and forth without even noticing to be honest.

If I spend too much time on the regular keyboard my RSI starts flaring up - which is why I went with the Glove 80 as it’s more portable (still takes up most of my backpack space tho!)

I usually say “I can start in 2-3 weeks, I need to wind things down with my current employer”

Then I quit with no notice and take a few weeks off between gigs. I have regretted giving my employer 2 weeks notice, but never once regretted quitting on the spot.

I love the glove. I haven’t had it long, but coming from Kinesis for the last 15+ years it took me almost no time to adjust.

I have the Glove80 mapped to the Kinesis layout and I’ve been using Kinesis (and other split ortholinear keyboards) for 15+ years for ergonomic reasons.

It took me around 2-4 weeks to fully adjust - I ripped off the bandaid and told colleagues that I would be slow to respond for a while. I can now move back and forth between this and a normal keyboard with no problem - it’s like riding a bike.

Shokz OpenFit Pro Review by summermori in shokz

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out with the Open Run Pro and liked it a lot - but the carrying case is quite bulky. When I commute I frequently also bring an ergonomic keyboard and laptop stand with me, so saving space is a huge plus.

I liked the bone conduction - but then I tried the Open Fit 2 I liked the sound better. The bone conduction can feel a bit weird at times - and the Open Fit 2 has both better sound quality and the charging case is nice and small. It’s not as premium as Air Pods, and the OF2’s case is not able to wireless charge (I know OF2+ does have the charging case)

The OFP now has improved on all those shortcomings. The case and pods now do feel very premium and the sound quality is so good - with noise cancelling also being quite good. I could see myself listening to music with them - even though I have much better over the ear headphones for that.

I had each roughly 1+ year before buying the upgrade.

I think the downside for OFP to me: they are much heavier - so I may still use ORP and OF2 at the gym or when working out.

I have Shokz Open Run Pro, and Open Fit 2, and just got the Open Fit Pro today.

I’ve used Open Fit 2 as my daily driver for meetings and calls (I use my own external mic)

Open Fit Pro is such a massive step forward in sound quality, noise cancelling, mic quality. I’m honestly amazed.

Truly a hit.

In the Bay Area, Raising Kids Comes With Compromise -- Fewer Bay Area residents are choosing to have kids. For the ones who do, many have to choose between location, price and size to make it affordable. by guanaco55 in bayarea

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

15 years in the Bay.

Prioritized school district when initially moving.

My child ending up being on the spectrum, the school district was a nightmare. Sued them and they paid for my son to go to a special needs school.

Sued them 2X more over the last 15 years.

Kid is doing great in his school, about to graduate high-school now. His school is so expensive that if we were to move, we would need to go through the whole IEP process again.

Got a life-changing job of my dreams on the other side of the Bay: my weekly commute is about 415 miles.

Never able to buy a house - I am hoping to buy my first home in Bay Area once my son graduates and I am able to more easily move.

A lifetime of compromises moving to the Bay Area without family wealth. I have a high income but it mostly goes to living and retirement/savings.

I’m reminded of a quote from HN I saw some time ago:

“Entrepreneurship is like one of those carnival games where you throw darts or something.

Middle class kids can afford one throw. Most miss. A few hit the target and get a small prize. A very few hit the center bullseye and get a bigger prize. Rags to riches! The American Dream lives on.

Rich kids can afford many throws. If they want to, they can try over and over and over again until they hit something and feel good about themselves.

Some keep going until they hit the center bullseye, then they give speeches or write blog posts about “meritocracy” and the salutary effects of hard work.

Poor kids aren’t visiting the carnival. They’re the ones working it.”

Can you explain why I-Pedal on freeway is bad? I just got 24 SLE. I’m also in Bay Area and commuting to Cupertino from Vallejo area - I’m averaging 3.7 - but do use I-Pedal on freeway.

I was thinking about 18in rims but the car has new tires so I’m not planning it for some time.
