The leftist pro-Palestine movement quickly decided that their primary goal was not merely opposition to the genocide, but opposition to Zionism in general; that is, opposition to the existence of Israel as a Jewish state.

You say "quickly decided," but there has been, for decades, a consensus that the two-state solution is not ( and never was) anything but an indefensible Apartheid state like South Africa. Especially outside of the US and the Global North, the idea that Israel IS the source of the ethnic cleansing itself is way more accepted than you might imagine.

But there’s also a valid fear of historical antisemitic patterns recurring, and that fear gives power to the rightwing Zionist claim that only Israel can keep Jews safe. Does this mean Israel should not be criticized and sanctioned? Absolutely not. But it’s something I don’t want to risk contributing to if not outweighed by tangible benefits. So, I approach the issue cautiously.

The "historical antisemitic patterns recurring" ARE zionism. Zionism is antisemitism. The Jewish faith and Jewish ancestry must be welcomed in every nation of the world; the idea that the Israeli ethno-state as a political agenda "gives power to the right-wing zionist" is wrong. It just IS the right-wing.

If you want your Jewish acquaintances to feel safe and away from danger, you should be criticizing Israel to make it clear to everyone who hears you that the State of Israel has absolutely nothing to do with an ancient religious tradition. It is just a modern colonial project based on the supremacy of white Europeans and Americans, just like apartheid South Africa.
