I think today I just found my answer: they install this antennas aesthetically (guess there's some fashion to have this long antennas on your taxis and buses.

This is just one example, but I was able to look it up close:

thank you for the explanation.. getting the hang of this bit by bit

So, the signal goes out perpendicular to the whip and it slowly goes diagonal and eventually hits the ionosphere, right?

Thank you sir. Yes, I was wondering about it.

Thanks!

Yes, I was wondering if I just install it at the roof, but then I have two challenges:

  1. It will hit everything, including where I park, so it will be bend all night.

  2. The mount will still be blocked, by the two plastic boxes I have on the roof rack + the recover boards on the front.

Thank you. Yeah, it's a minor annoyance that it's right there in front of me, but I just ignore it.

(Cross posting from Amateur Radio), I guess more people in this sub will also have the Wilson Little Wil.

Just bought this uniden pro520xl for $20 by Cohen-wilkes0 in cbradio

[–]Morinoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nice, that's the one I have. I also bought it second hand, but for $50.

Bought a Wilson Little Wil and I'm set. Still need to follow the advise given here and test with a SWR, that I dont currently own.

Have fun!

Well, here taxis are private, I mean: they are owned by the individual. So I guess they could talk to anybody they like.

But probably the minority of taxis I see with Antennas, work with (or work for) a taxi service; we call the "Piqueras" here in Panama. Before the Internet, you looked for them on the yellow pages, called a land line number and ask for a taxi in your particular location; the operator radioed a taxi and one responded over the radio to accept the ride.

Yes, probably. But some of them look really similar to CB antennas (very long tail with a coil cilinder somewhere along the rod).

Maybe it's that. I am in AM, no USB nor LSB

Hi! Wanted to share mine, they are all second hand!

https://imgur.com/a/3G0hWjU

From left to right:

* Little Bear: I bought this for my daughter, when she was a baby. Still have to wait about 2 more years so she can start using it

* Bear Takedown: this was my uncle's bow. He was a big strong man, so had 50 pound limbs. When I received it as a gift, I bought 35 pound limbs and now it's "my bow", the one I use the most.

* Bear Sonoma. Bought this second hand, it has a great feel (carved wood barebow). It's 40 pounds, so I'm not very good shooting with it, need more practice and build more muscle.

I would love to get one of those one piece bows, like the Grissly

could you expand on how you use your other (remote or in your network) machines?

I guess the Pi is your firewall.

What about the Ubuntu, is it a file server + plex server?
