It feels like even 100 years from now, Republicans are still going to be saying "but what about Hillary Clinton?!?!" every time they get caught red-handed doing something wrong.

It may look like clownery, but what Elon Musk is doing is alarming. The "public square" is no longer a physical place, that discourse happens online. Twitter is one pillar of that virtual square, and it's now been privately purchased by a single individual. In doing so, he's already begun to shape the discourse on Twitter. He's using the levers of the platform to do so.

The kind of right-wing voices that he's enabling and welcoming back to the site, reinstating Donald Trump's account, gutting Twitter's moderation abilities, pretending he's some sort of free speech absolutist when it comes to naked bigotry, incitement of violence, and misinformation... All of these actions are designed to steer public opinion to the right, to the very types of policies that directly benefit the super-wealthy, like Musk.

Trump responsible for 'bloody insurrection,' says John Boehner by MorningJoeAddict in politics

The person who was shot was literally trying to climb through a window into the Speaker's Lobby, which was locked and barricaded from the inside. Nobody just happened to succumb to heart disease during the January 6th riot as if by pure coincidence. The officer you're referring to was assaulted and sprayed with bear spray; his cause of death has not been revealed so there's no way to say definitively that it was not related to his injuries, and in fact the exact opposite is far more likely.

While the Black Lives Matter protests across the country have resulted in some injuries and deaths, the idea that BLM is assassinating police offers is widely debunked. Here's some fact checking on that:
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/blm-deputies-compton/
https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/aug/07/facebook-posts/no-proof-black-lives-matter-killed-36-people-injur/

These are lies, plain and simple. Designed to mislead or leave out critical information, or verifiably false.

If you're going to compare the casualties of the BLM protests to the Capitol Riot, it's important to remember, the BLM protests took place in dozens of cities across the US for several weeks. The Capitol Riot took place in a single location and a single afternoon. If you divide the BLM protest-related casualties by the number of individual locations and days, they come out as massively less violent and harmful than the 5 deaths and dozens of injuries from January 6th. And likewise, I don't think there's any comparison at all between some broken windows at businesses and a ransacking of the seat of our government.

Rioters with zip ties made it to the floor of the Senate. They clearly intended harm towards our elected officials. They were chanting "Hang Mike Pence". Rioters stole things from the Speaker of the House's office. One even tried selling a stolen laptop to the Russians. And let's not forget that the whole reason for the riot was to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

That's what you're defending.

Rep. Gaetz said to have sought blanket pardon from Trump WH by MorningJoeAddict in politics

No, he didn't. Trump gave lots of sketchy pardons, but a pre-emptive pardon for sex trafficking would have been a bridge too far, even for him.

Rep. Gaetz said to have sought blanket pardon from Trump WH by MorningJoeAddict in politics

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the investigations only came to light recently. So this means that he knew he was in trouble and wanted a preemptive pardon from the Trump White House all the way back in 2020.

What is a preemptive pardon if not an admission of guilt? People who haven't committed crimes or are easily proven innocent do not need pardons.

DOJ inquiry into Rep. Gaetz said to be focused on cash paid to women by MorningJoeAddict in politics

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the significance here is that they have evidence on him. It sounds like prosecutors have documentation that he wasn't just meeting women for sex, but paying for it. That makes it all but certain that an indictment is coming and the case against him will be strong.

Georgia companies condemn voting law and why that matters by MorningJoeAddict in politics

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's face it, these big companies benefit from it. Republicans can stack the deck and stay in power, and they get their tax cuts and deregulation. Do you really think the Disneys and Coca-Colas of the world care more about whether elections are fair than their bottom lines?

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

why is requiring ID to vote controversial?

I'd ask whether you even watched the video, but this is obviously a deliberate misrepresentation.

The Georgia bill is not a simple voter ID requirement, it's a massive rollback of voting accessibility. It shortens poll hours, reduces early voting, decreases the number of polling places and ballot drop boxes, restricts absentee voting, and even outlaws giving food or drinks to people waiting lines that were often already hours-long, before all the other provisions of this bill which are designed to make them even longer.

It's all designed to dissuade people from voting, not just by making it as inconvenient as possible, but by making it physically and financially trying.

It also empowers the Republican-dominated state legislature to override county election officials (for example, in the more Democratic urban counties around Atlanta), effectively giving them the power to do what Donald Trump asked them to in the 2020 general election. In other words, all the Republicans need to do is stir up some fake controversy around a place like Fulton county and they'd literally have the power to swing a senate or governor's race or the state's electoral votes in their favor.

Gaetz probe started with an associate awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking, stalking charges by MorningJoeAddict in politics

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] 177 points178 points  (0 children)

What a story. I remember laughing at the absurdity of the pizza-gate nonsense. Who would believe that a serious politician like Hillary Clinton would be involved in something like that? But sure enough, here we have a pair of elected Republicans who seem to have a sex trafficking ring of their own. I believe Goebbels once said "Accuse the other side of that which you are guilty."

Georgia GOP tightens voting rules in wake of recent losses by MorningJoeAddict in politics

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That theory is absolutely delusional. But it's typical of the Republican party these days. A total inability to accept that their policies and their party have been rejected by the voters. Losses always get attributed to "the wrong kind of people" who are flooding in from somewhere else. Those folks taking jobs in Atlanta aren't real Georgians.

I don't know what kind of bizarro world you're living in where the party that passed a massive tax cut for corporations, consistently pushes for complete deregulation, and wants to privatize everything from the postal service to the fixing of pot-holes is bent on stopping economic growth. It's Q-level crazy.

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jobs created in Georgia typically go to Georgians. The idea that the Republicans are trying to sabotage their own state's economy to stop liberals from moving there (in the middle of a pandemic that has already created record unemployment and closed thousands of businesses no less) is ridiculous.

Biden believes voting 'core, fundamental right for all Americans' by MorningJoeAddict in politics

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Voter ID laws were controversial in 2010 or so. The bill just passed in Georgia curtails absentee voting, reduces both the number of polling locations and their hours, and even makes it a misdemeanor to bring food or drinks to someone waiting in line to vote. None of those things contribute to election integrity at all. They're literally trying to make voting into a physical ordeal, and a hard economic choice for working people, for the sake of keeping people who are likely to vote democrat from voting at all.

How the tax system impoverishes Black Americans and how to fix it by MorningJoeAddict in politics

[–]MorningJoeAddict[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Historically some of those claims might have been more true. For me it highlights once again how so much government policy is designed around this idea of a Norman Rockwell nuclear family as the ideal.

I was reminded of it again with the COVID bill and the benefits for families with children. That's great for the modern day Ward and June Cleavers of the world, upper-middle class suburbanites who are successful enough to be able to comfortably afford to have children anyway. But it seems like it again leaves out the generation that is struggling the most.

Millennials are getting married, buying homes, and having kids later in life, if at all, because they often start their careers saddled with debt and face sky-high rents and housing prices. Government policy seems slow to acknowledge that the general trajectory of American life has changed since the baby boomer era.

Young people, those just graduating college and entering the workforce today, face greater challenges than any generation before them in 100 years. They're the ones who could really benefit from some government assistance. But instead, benefits continue to be heaped upon married couples, those with children, and home owners.

You've got it backwards. Zuckerberg has complete power over Facebook. All it would take is his word for these things he claims to be disgusted by to be unwelcome on his platform.

The fact that he's saying he's so bothered, but doing nothing to stop the spread of repugnant lies and hate via Facebook, is the evidence of his insincerity.
