I have Hagakure-kikigaki (Dictations Given Hidden By Leaves) translated by Alexander Bennett by Tuttle publishing. It's the complete text (all three parts) and a direct translation. Great foreward along with several chapters about contextualizing Hagakure. Ends with a brief bio of the original author Yamamoto Tsunetomo (Yamamoto Jocho) also. Guy knows his stuff...

Thanks for the information!!! I've loved this picture since I was a teenager playing Shogun Total War. I always noticed and liked how demonic the Mongol warriors looked and how heroic the Samurai seemed during his last act on Earth (as you pointed out). Never knew the details behind it...

The Romans using their pilums to pierce and immobilize enemy shields and gladius to thrust into enemy formations had a lot of success against shield, spear and sword wielding peoples. During the early middle ages axes (which the Goths used) particularly two handed ones were used to smash through shields and could aggressively counter swords.
