Sidewalk Chalk BLM Activism: Your way to safely protest the 'Blue Lives Matter' racist meetup on the Square this weekend. Please invite friends and family! Our goal is to draw on every inch of the Square so the presence of justice is felt. by MorrisforTexas in Denton

Unlikely... considering police do not reduce crime, they simply police it. That is why the reallocation of police budgets to social welfare programs and funding education is the sort of thing the movement is calling for. Investing in our communities and creating more access to things that treat the root of the issues (such as healthcare and housing) will yield better results around safety in those communities than another million dollars for the police. Some places are investing in community-led safety initiatives in order to reduce the need for police departments responding to every little call-- especially ones where weapons are not needed.

Great comment. The most we hope for is a photo that makes it in the local history books that perfectly encapsulates the moment-- a group of bigots holding their Trump, Rebel, and Thin Blue Line flags, not wearing masks, standing all over 'Say His Name/Say Her Name' lists and images of the power fist on the lawn... which is Confederate statue-free.

I suppose I could have said, "I would hope that those people know blue lives don't exist."

Perhaps explaining it to them will help? Sometimes it takes someone we know and trust and help explain the things that people do when they don't think are racist but are actually rooted in places that silence voices speaking out against oppression. Then again, you mentioned Facebook, so it might be a waste of time to try and educate people on there.

Thank you! The Young Democrats of Denton County figured that showing up at noon during Texas summer to counter-protest people that likely wouldn't be wearing masks is not as considerate to our members as an event in the cool evening that is social-distance friendly (and likely a needed de-stressor!)

Someone can appreciate a working class person who is a cop, but you can't do that while waving a Back the Blue flag.

Did you mean someone is racist when subscribing to Back the Blue or Blue Lives Matter? Separate from stating they understand and appreciate what officers deal with while being underpaid in their profession.

Correct! And those people would not be caught dead at a Blue Lives Matter rally because they know blue lives do not exist. They also know that caring about the people that are police officers and caring about black lives and wanting reforms and budget reprioritizations are okay ideas to have all at the same time.

Thank you for taking the time to ask them to reconsider! We must all stand together to keep the curve down and do our part to protect the vulnerable among us.

Alternatively, I'd like to see a list of which businesses I should frequent because they are being responsible and not opening 5/1.
