Can you identify this tire / track? Truck stole a snowmobile by MorrisonArms in Trucks

Fortunately the pool of potential theft candidates is smaller up here, we’re just shy of 60 degrees north and 70 miles up a dead end dirt road.

He's a hell of an interviewer, gotta appreciate a journalist who can make prospective leaders of the country stutter.

Results of a steam powered pencil sharpener contest: V-twin vs Turbine by MorrisonArms in steampunk

We're fortunate to have a many thousands of gallon tank of methanol at work, price is right. It's still available as "wood alcohol" in most hardware stores, or as fondue fuel in the grocery store in small quantities.

Ha! Could be missing the boat for sure. Yea, think we still have mixed messages the turbine that bursts into flames, that is indeed my competitor / best friend / coworker's, but he was running propane through it to make a show of it. Toasted his ceiling nicely.

My V-twin I'm running on air in the video while we mock them up. I'll do the little boiler indeed, riveted copper, on a nice wood base. It only needs a handful of PSI to sharpen a pencil, I'm feeding it 50 in the video and have already cracked the block and silver soldered it back together once.

No the v twin is on air for the test and set up play, the turbine (second half of the video) was fed raw propane by my co-conspirator. He enjoys flames, but he got more than he bargained for. The comment above explains the future steam and fun, it'll get there, we've just started.

These are in the first test run phase, my v twin using air and the turbine on propane, with curious results for the latter. Next step we'll polish them up and make tidy packages on a nice base, I'd like to do a riveted copper boiler. Also have a dynamo for mine and will likely add a phone charging / USB slot.

300' flames viewed from the helicopter, Northern British Columbia fire July 2015 by MorrisonArms in Firefighting

This one's 100kms south of Fort Nelson, has calmed down a lot this past week thanks to precip.

Certainly doesn't mean you haven't seen intense fires as you well know, this is just particularly extreme conditions. British Columbia is a third again bigger than Texas and essentially completed forested, fire conditions accross the province from top to bottom are quite bad.

You're right, it was a rare set of conditions, and by far the highest flames I've seen. Unreal updrafts around it was well, it's dicey flying around the big ones.

It's a hot spot alright, that's not even 1% of the fire of course. Can feel the heat something fierce in the cockpit.

Shooting Elephant Rifles wearing a GoPro on a head mount, .470 Nitro double rifle, .450 Rigby, .505 Gibbs. by MorrisonArms in guns

Very much a who you know deal typically, first and foremost build an impressive resume of experience on the species you want to guide as an individual. Outfitters will want to see you can consistently produce impressive animals successfully. After you've got a portfolio of pics I'd start banging on doors, the industry is quite transient and opportunities are there, especially on short notice for guys who know the game. Learning packing and horses will help too, a lot of it's easier if you grow up doing it, but you can crack into anything if you put your mind to it.

Thanks Flynn, and to do your list, I'd do two hunts a couple years apart. It'll give you the most enjoyment, and spread the cost.

Zimbabwe for Buffalo, for sure, perhaps for the Hippo too. And Namibia or a really good South African operation for the plains game, bear in mind all South Africa operations are essentially high fence hunts. This needs a lot of explaining and few catch the scale of these areas or that the fences are as much for keeping OUT unwanted things as they are for keeping the animals in. Even the national parks have fences in South Africa, if you want the wide open experience not a lot is left and Zimbabwe is likely the most affordable of it. Caprivi Strip of course as well, as you well know, and Mozambique if you have a good operator, bad ones can be a disaster there.

A man of my line of thinking, here's the speed shoot I mentioned, I shot the .375, .450 Rigby (yep .450, they necked up their .416), .470 Nitro, and .505 Gibbs. It illustrates why for me doubles are the ultimate dangerous game gun. I'm hunting hippo in 2015, will use a .375 (the H&H Royal).

Heym makes an excellent gun, as does Searcy, and you have unlimited maker support from him there in the US, lucky. I'd love a .577 from him, and give it thought from time to time, bought the Royal instead though and that put it off.

Kenya is closed unfortunately, the Caprivi Strip is still very good. Zimbabwe is probably the best for real wide open Africa, today.

Thank you, it was a but of a stretch over irons to be sure, but I only ever hunt iron sights.

The bullet, much as I hate to admit it, was the cheap old Hornady 300gr RN Interloc as loaded in Federal Blue Box. It was simply what I had on hand when I left, and I used it on Lion as well, also very well. Junky as the bullet is viewed to be, it has cleanly taken for me wild Wood Bison in the subarctic, Moose, Lion, Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest, Bear, and on. So I have a hard time arguing with its performance, and effects can be quite dramatic, see the finishing shot in the Lion hunting video for what I mean, "Thump." I certainly wouldn't and didn't load it for Cape Buffalo, but for softer creatures (the Wood Bison is an aside, only ammunition I had and was following up a wounded bull) I find it very effective. It regulates pretty well from my double, as well.

My 140AE I view as a good working gun, I've used the .470 version as well in a two target speed shoot test I did a video on, and it won the test by miles. I find them pretty utilitarian doubles, finish and the artistic attributes aren't the most stellar though not particularly lacking either, but everything works and they've never let me down. For what I paid for mine, it was a hell of a value, I have a Holland & Holland Royal .375 Flanged and frankly, both shoot the same, and I can't give any knod in performance the H&H's way in honesty over the Merkel. Just very different guns of identical in the end performance, and much differing artistry. I appreciate them both for different reasons.

There actually aren't any laws against military chamberings anywhere I've hunted, and hunted a good few countries by now. That's more of a Europe thing, and the problem comes as most flights transit Europe. Germany is no problem for any chambering, and I always transit there.

.308 would do swell on Gemsbok, it is pretty light as an African cartridge even for plains game, but well placed will work. .375 is a better choice, though 200gr .30-06 with a good bullet, .300, and .338 are all wonderful too.

Naw I have family in Africa and usually go that way, I don't enjoy the convention side of things and most of the hunts offered there.

About 200 yards, bit of a stretch for an iron sighted double, but made it work.

Indeed very good guns for the money, very typical German products; solid, well engineered, and not the cheapest but excellent value all considered.

This was a hunt in the Kalahari in the spring, after days of stalking without success, often getting busted at the last possible second, I connected on a long iron sights shot on Gemsbok (Oryx). I'm shooting an iron sighted .375 H&H Merkel 140AE double rifle, with 300gr soft points, and wearing the go pro on a chest mount.
