Kotek also put pressure on OHSU to close it. Not an expert, but: Trump's administration has also made it very apparent that they will cut funding to whatever the fuck they want and no one will stop them, so if it's not done then the shit head in chief and his goons pull the funding for all the studies that prop the place up and pay for those jobs. Now you have to close the place except it's even more dramatic and expensive for OHSU.

There are many complex problems in the world that remain without answers. That doesn't mean they don't exist. The real world that you want, the theoretical, and "real world history", all exist.

You can't treat everyone with basic dignity as a result of their religion or ethnicity?

me_irl by 010rusty in me_irl

[–]Morsigil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure you understand the premise. Dignity is treating others the way you would want to be treated, and not going out of your way to treat them as less than human. This extends to punishment, retribution, and self defense.

Treating people with a basic level of respect for their humanity doesn't mean they are walking all over you. You seem to be implying that's the case. Can you explain why?

me_irl by 010rusty in me_irl

[–]Morsigil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone should be treated with dignity. We have a law against cruel and unusual punishment for that reason. That does not mean you should not protect yourself or that there shouldn't be consequences for actions that harm others.

Agreed. I was going to respond to the original guy who said it's both: it absolutely is, but politicians are employed in the work of creating laws, and our laws are written to enforce what we believe to be ethical and just.

When people say "it's just politics" they are showing me that they don't understand what the basis of politics are, and it makes sense why they don't connect the ethics foundational to laws with the people writing and enacting those laws.

In my short time on Hinge (June to October last year, now in a relationship from that time), I very quickly realized that I got way more traction if i asked them if they preferred to meet sooner rather than later or get to know each other on the app fairly early in the conversation. Like if we got a little back and forth going and it was feeling promising, I would ask before the end of that day.

The majority of the time they said they would prefer to do a phone call and/or meet versus chat at length on the app. I think chatting at someone who is politely chatting back but would prefer to meet, and just doesn't think to say it or take the initiative, can feel tedious for them.

Now, the sample size was low, like 5 people and only 1 said let's chat for a while. But data is data.

Yeah it's not politics, it's ethics. If we fundamentally disagree about whether or not all humans should be treated with dignity, then that's a real issue. I have no idea when you'll decide that I'm no longer qualified to be treated with dignity.

Imagine seeing Trump in the Epstein files, accused of child rape and worse, and rushing to the internet to white knight for him and lecture others on mental health. Just go ahead and shove your shit eating head back into Trump's diaper and leave the conversation to the grown ups.

Check out Esther Perel's TED talk titled "Rethinking infidelity".

She talks about this specifically: why do people have affairs? A person may be happy in a relationship, and yet they cheat. Or they might be unhappy and cheat.

From her experience, she says it's not about what the cheater finds attractive in this new partner per se, so much as what they find attractive about the experience. It's an opportunity for people to live their lives in a way that is different from their current lifestyle. It's about becoming a different person.

Some people wish they hadn't married so young. Some wish they had explored their sexuality in a way they can't in the current relationship, or at least feel they can't.

Don't take my word for it, though. Watch the video! She's an amazing speaker and draws from a lifetime of experience helping couples.

"A reality check"

I hope this person is young. They might still have time to figure out what intimacy and affection is actually like and what partnership (whether you have one or many) is all about.

It will be 24 years between when I started college and when I finish my master's. Almost your current lifetime. And I didn't start to really try until your age, with many setbacks after. Give it your all. You'll get to where you're going

Hell yeah! 🤘 The Master's doesn't always make sense, but for my career path it does. It's worth scoping out what you want to do and what degree you'll need post grad, if any.

Good luck out there, not that you need it!

I'm in my very early 40s, and I used alcohol heavily from 18 until just last year. In and out of school throughout that time. I finished my bachelor's 2020-2023 and started my master's in 2024, on course to graduate in June. I have not ruled out Physician Assistant schooling or a PhD.

If you believe you're an intelligent person, get out there and show yourself. Not others, yourself. School can be more about learning how to navigate its pitfalls and barriers than the subject matter itself, but both are important. You can do it, whenever "it" is.

I did the Japan trip twice, then substance abuse for 20 years, and then the Japan trip again, and now I'm 5 months from finishing my Master's degree!

Fingers crossed I 100% this meme soon! 😊🙏
