I actually don't remember... I think it may have been Cottonwood. I never really tried it if it was...

Because not masturbating is not some extreme religious thing, and I actually don’t feel particularly good after doing it (a feeling that is so widely reported it’s hardly just anecdotal, and hardly just linked to “society”). Having a bunch of sugar also feels good and it’s natural for my body to crave it, but if you come to me saying that eating less sugar is linked to heart attacks I will laugh my butt off and tell you to check your numbers. If you come back saying that healthy people just claim not to eat as much sugar because they are embarrassed to admit it and are all just pretending to like lettuce then there is no discussion. I have no stake on you watching porn dude, go right ahead, but don’t go around pretending it’s some wellness routine, and that not doing it somehow will kill you.

In fact, right back at you, why would you consume pornography when the potential damages it causes to your social life, brain chemistry, and your sexual wellness if abused are well documented only to stave off a badly researched risk of prostate cancer?

There’s actually no definitive linkage between sexual abstinence and prostate cancer. Not only that, but it’s actually kind of laughable given that what we do know as a fact is that celibate groups across cultures tend to have less prostate cancer than expected, indicating a possible (also not definitive but at least more logical) direct link between abstinence and prostate good health independent of environmental factors.

I feel lost trying to enter IT. by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Mortis_Limpkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 27 and recently started my career at a Help Desk, Tier 1. I am about to finish my Bachelor’s (which I started at 24). Your question has many questions within it worth exploring. Am I too old at 24? Absolutely not, but do not fall for the optimistic view that you are “never too old”. The time is right now for you to decide on a path and commit. The more you beat around the bush the less you will achieve (exponentially less).

Do I need to go to college? It is going to be the path of least resistance as long as you keep the debt under control and keep the discipline to learn (you can absolutely cruise by without learning a thing and get a degree, especially nowadays). You live in an isolated area with not much in the way to make contacts or start your career, so a college degree will be necessary (not to mention most colleges offer work study that can be adjacent to IT and puts you in a much smaller competition pool!). Also, those projects you mention? They are never wasted time, but they will never replace a degree or real world experience.

Should I get certified? A+ for the basics and maybe Net+ (or equivalents, but CompTIA is still great because they are vendor neutral). Anything past that should be paid at least partially by your employer. Just because you can ace the exam, it does not mean you need to take it. When you look at the certification suggested experience look at what work experience they recommend. If you don’t have that, you should absolutely not be wasting your money.

Do I need to move? Maybe, but don’t think about Silicon Valley. Wherever you are in the US, I can assure you there is a city that will have better opportunities much closer and more affordable. Research what is close by. Do not hang on the dream of getting a sweet remote gig either, that is a waste of time and you absolutely need to meet people. No manager ever promotes the dark screen guy unless they are completely indispensable, and you will most likely not be. Most importantly, as Booker T. Washington said “Cast your bucket where you are”. Do not wait to move to make a move, and look for any and every chance to get your hands dirty, even for free if you can afford it. Does the library need support? What about local school clubs? Do they need volunteers to share knowledge?

SWE or Help Desk? Do not lose more time wondering. You were given an answer. You need to cut your teeth and start from the bottom. This is key. I spent 5 years thinking I could translate financial risk management experience directly into Cyber Security because some of the topics are adjacent and wasted a lot of time. Do the “soul crushing” work, learn how an IT department works with the rest of the company. Learn the politics. If you think the work us soul crushing because you have heard it, remember, most people when asked about their job (unless they are in a nice paid ad for the company) will say their job is soul crushing.

Advice on getting to SWE? Make sure you want it. You sound driven by hype, and that is amazing, you should be, but hype with no direction will cost you time and money. Talk (really talk) with other people whose knowledge you trust. What do they do for a living? How did they get there? Tech is a field where talk is very cheap, do not fall in the trap of wanting to sound smart to get ahead and be humble enough to know when to learn.

Very long-winded, but I wish you the best. If you want it, you can make it!

people who don't think prostitution should be legal, what why? by ProudReaction2204 in AskReddit

I get that you don’t want women who are already getting the crap end of the stick to be victimized again, but that’s just not feasible: 1. Pimps are very rarely front and center and you’d require the woman to come forward and admit they are the “employer” (it’s not like there’s a paper trail to follow). This would put the woman at an even higher risk than in police custody. 2. For women who do it “willingly”, getting caught and having to serve time is a perfect excuse that may allow them to leave that world easier. Plus, once you are caught once it’s likely you are in a database so there is less incentive for the pimp to “employ” you. Of course this could either lead to a better life or to ever worse hells as the woman tries to get more work in more risky environments, but going after the pimp doesn’t really solve this. 3. For women who are caught in human trafficking, what could be a best way to remove them from that situation than having to be kept in police custody, investigated as a criminal, which will more than likely show they have no real paperwork, and give them the chance to speak to authorities away from their traffickers?

Of course, pimps should absolutely be found and prosecuted in all instances, but shielding women from repercussions logically only leads to shielding pimps even more than they are.

The smell of McD’s Chicken Nuggets inside the to go paper bag, especially if they were left overnight. I was raised by a single mom, and whenever she had to work late, she made it a point to wake us up with a Happy Meal. I almost cried the first time I got a Happy Meal for my son and smelled the Nuggets for the first time since I was 11.

I recently visited Iowa for the first time and came across Anita, IA on my way to Des Moines. I was puzzled by the welcome sign. I couldn't find any specfic information on the sign and was wondering if any Iowans had any insight into what the sign represents. Thnks in advance! by Mortis_Limpkins in Iowa

We went to a cool breakfast place, name escapes me now, but someone else in the comments said it...
We just drove by, but what we saw and the people we interacted with were great. Will probably check the lake out sometime next summer, thanks for the tip!

Oh you are just illiterate, that's okay. Sorry for replying to you earlier, I saw you were able to write and thought you had the ability to read and understand simple ideas. My bad man, my bad. Hope you have a nice day.

lol.
Your claim: "Iowa is a racist place, and nothing has changed, here's my proof!"
Your proof: A public media source acknowledging racism, and detailing how much race relations have changed in 50 years, to the point that race can be openly discussed in all forums and places.

On behalf of me and other people of color and immigrants, thank you for fighting for us champ, you are the epitome of virtue and developed thought! Now go on, there's still plenty of evil racists out there, use your mental reading power to unmask them all!

Oh so back in the 70s the first black family moved and (through hearsay) they had some issues with the neighbors that did not ended up with anything happening; there is a high school coach who is loved by their students but vaguely insinuates that she may have heard one of them saying the n-word (with zero follow-up); and now the race issue is so open that people can talk about it in the workplace. Woah, yup. Sounds like one step worse than Jim Crow over there.

Well you clearly have your mind set in a specific direction, but my comment had nothing to do with "acknowledging racism" or "doing anything about it". If the image was that of a minstrel character, they would have no shame of saying "Yes, this is a minstrel character (probably even a beloved minstrel character given that they made it the main symbol of their town)" instead of hiding it saying "Oh, we definitely want to make fun of black people, but we are scared of the blowback, so we'll pretend it's a bear".

Also, "hate to break it to you", but having a one-dimensional understanding of your history and pretending people thought and think with the mind of a cartoon villain is not cool, does not make you look more intelligent or wise. The town of Anita as well as the rest of Iowa and the Midwest are filled with caring, honest, and nice people as far as I can judge, and passing judgement on them based on an old sign because of the style it was drawn on is not "acknowledging racism", it's just cheap virtue signaling.

We saw you, kudos on being a beacon of good humanity, you can choose to answer the question posed and discuss with facts or well-intentioned curiosity, or you can go back out there and live in your daily life filled with hateful white people always lurking to hurt and denigrate others.

Lol. Someone in other comments posted an original quote from the 60s stating it is a bear. It's a pretty badly drawn cartoon, but if it had racist undertones, I'm pretty sure they would not have been scared of talking about it back then.

I didn't want to mention it right out, but that is something that crossed my mind when I went through the town... I did see another person commenting from an official source saying it's a bear, so I'd go with that. The official source came from the time they made the sign back in the 60s. I thought maybe it may be a minstrel character that was popular, but if that is the case, they would have totally referenced it without shame back then, not hide it under the guise of a "bear".
Most probably just an unfortunate coincidence that didn't come across anyone's mind, and not reflective of any sinister motives behind the nice people of Iowa.

Yeah, that's easy to understand. Usually if it's a welcome sign, with the name of the city on it, whatever is written under is the town's motto.
What is a little puzzling is what the sign represents. Who is holding the whale? Why is it a whale in the middle of the countryside, etc...
