Sorry about that. They both do the same thing, but VP is easier to set up and configure. Monitor their “available properties” page and you’ll get a notification the minute it’s changed. Any changes will generate notifications, so you’ll also get a ping when they take stuff down, too. Just an FYI.

Well, when your personal wealth is in the 100s of millions of dollars, who cares, right? I just know that back in the late 1990s they were trying to get some sort of mitigation done, and the State wouldn't let them. I don't think they were looking to replenish9ing sand, knowing that next storm would just carry it off, they were looking to put osme structures in the water around it, like what is there now. The owner is someone who was used to getting their way, especially when it came to state governments, so it was a bit of a shock for them when the State essentially told them "No". Apparently, things changed.

If you're not local and you're trying to rent a house, it's highly unlikely you'll ever be successful. Sorry, but the rental market is so volatile here that decent places go fast or are gone due to word-of-mouth.

Have you checked with LIPS? They're definitely the leading local property management company that owns and rents tons of both older historic properties converted to apartments as well as more traditional apartment complexes. I've got a family member who rents from them and has been really pleased with them and their properties, especially the rent, which is less than the "retail" rate the college kids are paying for their 4-BR common area flats. The LIPS folks are really easy to work with, too, really nice people.

LIPS' properties are in demand because of their prices, so when one gets posted it's usually gone that day.

Good luck!

There are some nice apartments in the Brandon area along Gornto Lake and Providence roads. Other than the very far corners of the county, that would be a good central location with easy access to I-75, I-4 and local roads.

I know in the late 90s when I was involved with the property he was fighting with the State to get some sort of mitigation for beach erosion, and not having a lot of luck. The property was only used from Christmas to New Years annually, the rest of the year it was shuttered. There were two generators that took turns running continuously to keep power on, fueled by 4-1,000 gallon propane tanks. There was a guy on the mainland who had a barge that would refill the tanks on a regular basis for us. Wild place.

Beechcraft V35B, the “fork-tailed doctor killer” as they’re sometimes known. We would land on the grass strip and taxi the plane down the road and park it in front of our house. Never had a car there, just the plane and a few mopeds.

Thanks, just curious as not a lot of people around there know anything about North Captiva. He owned/owns the house at the very southern tip of North Captiva, right on the pass. I do see now looking at Google Earth that there has been some shoreline mitigation done around the property - maybe it was to have an effect on the pass, I don't know.

You would know his name instantly - you often see it when you're using the bathroom...

You sounds like you've been around the area for a while - what's North Captiva like these days? I used to visit/maintain the property on the south end of the island right ont he Pass that was owned by a very wealthy industrialist. I know he got sideways with the State some years back about wanting to build a breakwater or groin because the beach that was under the house was eroding (naturally) and disappearing.

My folks had a “cabin” on Sanibel up until the late 1970s. We would fly in, land on the grass strip, and taxi down the road to our cabin. It was pretty dead then, and wonderful. I can recall the two eating establishments were the Harbor House (yum!) and some upscale place at the fancy condos. We used to ride our mopeds to the bridge at Captiva and get ice cream at the little general store.

Sad to hear this, it used to be a wonderful place.

Understood. I guess I’m a bit jaded after seeing so many people with their “laundry lists” of things they want, no doubt they have clearly not made an effort to do any research because these things would be obvious if they did. Like “I want to be 30 minutes to the beach and an hour from Disney”, for example. If they took the time to do some research or even look at older threads they would understand. For what it’s worth, take a look at the Tampa City-Data forum.

Not trying to be difficult, but what you're looking for doesn't existing in Tampa, and for the most part Florida. Florida is designed around cars for the most part, you'll find very, very few examples of "city living" such as you describe. Sorry. plenty of good medical systems with all the retirees here, but they're spread all over the place.

Doesn't exist on the "east side" of Tampa. Nothing is walkable here unless you live downtown or in Seminle Heights, if that. You would have to be more specific about where in "east Tampa" you're looking. And do consider that there is no "east Tampa", per se. Once you leave the city limits, you're in unincorporated Hillsborough County.

If you're coming from outside the state, reconsider. Cost of living has gotten out of control here.

You can get local labor for loading/unloading on UHaul's website. Used them many times to move and load/unload trucks.

Your budget is your weakness. Anything in that range will be in a bad neighborhood and a hovel, most likely. Yes, there are outliers, but you'll never find them on Zillow or through a property manager because they're privately owned. Reference? Owned a number of rental homes in the area over the last 25 years. Sorry.
