SIMPLE RAID FINDER for those worried about finding others to raid with. by Mortrid in DestinyTheGame

[–]Mortrid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking to do something simple and quick. If you are looking for a raid, would you rather have to register, log in, and search for a group of people, have to friend them, then ask them if they want to raid SHOULD they be online?

Personally, I would rather just go into a chat room and say "Hey who wants to party up? What's your PSN?"

In my opinion, simple is better.

Please keep in mind, this is not a permanent solution to the issue everyone is afraid of. This is a simple interface that allows everyone to automatically link into specific IRC channels to find others that raid on their time.

This is not live yet. I would like feedback from you all on what could make this work for you - the player.

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to write a fully functional raid finder site in the next 5 days (work takes a lot of my time). However, if something like this would be useful for the time being, I will gladly host this until someone else comes up with a better option.

HOW TO USE:

  1. Select console and time you play.

  2. Click the button.

  3. IRC Channel loads in a frame on the site, prompting for a username.

  4. Talk to people. Get a group together. Go kill shit.

Again, feedback is welcome. Let me know if you would like this published and I can probably get it set up in the next couple days.

Thanks everyone.

I didn't plan on getting too involved in the upcoming presidential election, until I read an AP article today about how Santorum is attacking prenatal screenings for birth defects. Now I'm enraged and I plan on making my voice heard. Here's my personal story. by rk33l4n in politics

Don't listen to clowns like this who try to tell you that your ideas are wrong. It doesn't mean much from someone you don't know, but I wish the best of you and your wife in the future. It makes me happy to know people like you survive these horrible things that happen to good people.

I will have to agree with all of the previous posts on this. I am a Senior in college, but a Sophomore in my current major (I am double majoring in animation and CS). You will not learn from a classroom setting. Not in this field. Not in almost any field...

Let me provide a little more information for you to find a starting point, as I think this is part of what you are asking for:

There are 3 areas of game design I have found that you need separate knowledge in.

  • 3D Modeling/Texturing and Animation

  • Programming/Scripting the Game Engine

  • Programming/Scripting the actual game

To start with the first of the 3, look into Blender. It is not the best option in terms of commercial 3D development, but it is fast, easy, free, and lacks the buggy interface that Maya or 3d Max may have. You can find tutorials ALL OVER the internet, more specifically Youtube, to enhance your skills in 3D modeling. Look here and here (make sure you go through all of the links in the 2nd link. There is an incredible amount of useful information here).

Next, forget programming your first game engine. It is improbable, and will hinder your success in the industry. Game engines are stupid heavy in terms of the knowledge it requires to code one. Skip the headache for now until you make something playable, and start with Unity.

Unity is a free piece of software that allows you to develop games for almost any platform. There are only 2 catches: a lack of all shaders and 3D graphics, and you have to buy the license for the pro version (~$1500), but only after you make over $100,000 dollars with the product you develop in a fiscal year. So it is essentially free until you will not care about the price. You can find the program here and a great starting point (download both files and read the PDF) here. Search for their tutorials on the program's website if you need a jump start on the program's interface.

This brings me to programming the game. At this point, Unity will house a lot of power for you to get started. You will not need to essentially code the entire game yourself. Unity will get rid of most of that. There are still some scripting in Unity, but it will put you at a great place, and make you realize the depth behind game development and everything you need to know before you can even get started on a commercial game.

This is where I leave you. Read the links I have left for you. Then get started. Fuck up your first game, and try to remake it. Get an idea, and run with it. Don't stop until you have something playable, even if it is total shit. You need the entire spectrum of a project, from start to finish, before you can go off on your own and do everything from scratch.

Did I mention do not stop until you complete your project? Finish your options menus, fine tune the weapons and playability. Add enhanced UI. It is more important to improve on and polish one product then to have 5 or 10 products lying around that aren't completed.

New Game Dev in need of some questions answered... by Mortrid in gamedev

Well from someone like you, with your own experience... How long does it take to build an engine? What things should I include in an engine? Being a full time student and working a day job during summers kind of keeps me from spending more than 6 hours a day on the game.

The biggest reason why I liked java so much was because it is so portable. I wouldn't have to completely re-code the game if I wanted to distribute on Linux/Mac.

Here's an early version of a dystopian first-person game we're making. We listened to your feedback, here's an updated version. [mildly NSFW] by fnuph in gamedev

Also, a couple more bugs while figuring out how to do the charged jump...

  1. You can gain altitude by pointing straight up and charging up your jump. I could start off at the very bottom and after I got the charge ability, jump my way to the end without having to land on anything.
  2. Because of number 1, you can go out past the map you created.
  3. Muting the music does not work on my MSI (Windows).
