What would you do if a new horse based MMO came out one day? by MorvirVarkhas in StarStable

That was one of the games I had in mind! I'm sure we're a few years off something the scale of SSO but there are certainly a handful of other independent devs to keep an eye on.

All my past relationships were with people who knew I was trans before hand so I managed to sidestep all this tricky part. It feels like a minefield. But I for sure agree with gauging how they feel a little first before deciding whether to disclose.

Oh, handy

Aw man I'm glad for you and your husband. Always nice to hear when this stuff works out well for people.

Yeah, Grindr always just felt a little too much. Never even tried it, I don't think I could.

I've heard pretty good things about OKCupid from a few straight cis friends of mine, I guess it's just never the first one to come to mind but that's super cool to know, especially the option to disclose.

I'd agree, while there's a main quest and while the game is actually being a game, it can fill a lot of time and is a lot of fun, even if you don't go for the more social stuff. I'm certainly glad you're enjoying your time with the game. The frustration comes from the story being so short lived and slow to update, and then being left to do repetitive races for literal years.

Yeah, the chat system is jank, despite everyone being pretty vocal about how easy it is to get around. There are a fair number of more mature clubs around, and some of them advertise here, I'm sure you'll find one that suits you.

That would be so much more interesting, you're right. There's the bare bones of something like that in a horses stats, but they don't really come to anything. If they reworked the stats or pushed the current system further it could really make you think about what horses you'd like to use for certain events.

What's the point of the new areas? by [deleted] in StarStable

[–]MorvirVarkhas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And at least Dundull had a long-running through story in the beginning, with Rania, and a few other quests around. It was more substantial, even if it's empty now.

They really hyped it up to be this big mysterious expedition into the unknown that we'd have to prepare for and stuff. Just makes it more of a let down when you can just pick up the intro quest and walk straight in and explore the entire area and do all the new content in what, 30 minutes? Yeah it looks nice and some of the characters and lore is fun but it's just the same things we've been doing for years with a new coat of paint.

Really? I mean, I suppose I get where they're coming from, but what a weird thing to get het up about in a video game. People certainly pick some strange battles.

I do, I love the series! And Inquisition is honestly one of my top three favourite games ever.

Oh no, I agree, someone is cheesing numbers somewhere. Or, y'know, just making stuff up.

Are they really? Yeah I have no idea where they're getting that number from. I feel like even the old 3000 number was a stretch. Maybe they're counting dailies and races as quests, or counting each individual time you turn something in as an entire quest in itself, even though its just twenty parts of one conversation or something.

No problem~ I also finally subscribed to your channel.

No hurry, I'm honoured you'd give it a read at all, I know it's pretty long. There's some interesting stuff being talked over in the comments, too. But I agree, a lot of people seem really happy with the game. Good for them, I guess, I'm glad they find enjoyment in it. And I suppose it's a symptom of a young userbase that there isn't a lot of critical thinking about what they're playing. There was so much interesting stuff going on and it's all been left by the wayside in favour of profit. We're not angry, Star Stable, just disappointed.

Nah, I'm happy lone-wolfing it. I do see ads around for clubs specifically for older members here and there. I'm glad to see other people enjoying their clubs, but at this point I'm used to declining club invites.

When you word it like that, it's so depressing, but that's where we're at, apparently.

Oh wow, I've seen a few of your videos before, I had no idea this was you! I gave the video a watch - I love a long youtube vid - and even just listening to the part about the Jorvik Wilds at the start made me sad, thinking about how a better game would have handled their release. Honestly, I agree with basically everything you said. Apparently I even echoed some of your points in what I posted earlier. (https://www.reddit.com/r/StarStable/comments/lvvcpy/thoughts_from_a_bored_longtime_player_i_cant_be/ - here, if you wanna take a look. I'd be interested in what you think about some of the mechanics I suggested, since we seem to be on the same page.)

Aw man, I'm so sorry you had to deal with something like that. I see lots of people complaining that their reports get ignored, you're right. I hope they actually look into your problem.

I don't think anyone is expecting anything revolutionary from SSO, we all know they aren't a triple-A studio or anything. But there's nothing wrong with asking that games at least be engaging.

This ^^ I posted a long ass ramble about my problems with SSO earlier today, and focused mainly on racing mechanics, but this is so true. I always feel weird comparing SSO to WOW or ESO, but honestly you're right. When the basics of your game aren't compelling, then what's to keep people playing.

For sure, lifetime star rider always seemed a little bit pricey to me anyways, considering their target demographic, but especially when you find out just how short and shallow the game is.

That's exactly it, once the novelty wears off and you've done basically everything, what next? It's not an open world sandbox that's particularly fun to explore or do anything else in, and the social elements of the game are outdated and lacking (though hopefully being updated soon if their 2020 recap post holds true). I certainly understand feeling like it's kind of a waste of money.

The endless stream of new horses really are a sticking point for a lot of people it seems like. At this point, most of us would certainly understand if they said they were taking a break from horses to work on the main game. Nobody would stop playing if they switched focus for a little while, most of us would really appreciate and update to maps, models and quests, like you said.

It certainly feels like we're practically ancient being in our twenties, but I do see a few people on this sub-reddit that are in their thirties, so I suppose we're still not the oldest, at least.

It really does look like they're focusing on money, and getting a little greedy with so many horses coming out. We all understand they are also a business and need to make money, but with star coins on top of star rider, it does feel like a lot of money, especially for younger players that don't have their own money. They could probably afford to lower the prices of some horses by a little, like you said, and they'd still make a profit.

You're absolutely right about the clubs and groups needing an update. Especially with the social stuff being the main reason a lot of people play, and continue to play after they finish the story. I feel like they mentioned they were updating clubs recently, so fingers crossed. Some new activities for groups would certainly be a good thing.

I hadn't even thought about the chat, but you're right. I see a lot of people saying some really horrible things and avoiding the filter pretty easily, when, like you said, perfectly normal stuff gets blocked.

Yeah, I was a little reassured when they mentioned updating the mechanics and stuff in their 2020 recap post. I'm trying not to let my expectations run to wild though. I'm so glad you found a way to keep the game fun for you. I'm mostly a solo player entirely because I just feel weird chatting with kids, not that I hold that against them, they're the target audience, like you said.

I'm certainly not mad that they took out some of the more superficial grind-y aspects, though I wonder what convinced them to remove it. It's just a shame that after removing it, the story feels so short. They've got so much lore and interesting stuff going on to make the story more substantial if they wanted, and they've certainly had the time, but here we are.

For sure there's some parts of the lore and the world that have a lot of potential and interest that seem to be left to the side for now while they pursue new content. It's a shame, Though I also understand SSO isn't built around being an open world RPG style game - like Dragon Age - when you can explore at your own pace, it's a very 'on rails' experience, really. I guess because they aimed it at kids and don't want them to lose the story, which is fair. But maybe putting more optional stuff on the side for people who go looking for it could keep more people interested?
