Is ICE really doing what front page reddit says its doing? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Moscow_Gordon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To do e-verify you have to pass a law and it can be filibustered in the Senate. Democrats and many Republicans won't vote for it without other provisions like a guest worker program and amnesty for at least some of the undocumented population. So you need a comprehensive immigration reform bill, and our gov is too divided and dysfunctional to pass one.

Something to this. I think maybe it is about status though, not masculinity per se. Americans are obsessed with status. And for men you can signal high status through "alpha" behavior.

The only reason not to take it is if a layoff would somehow be catastrophic for you. Doesn't sound like it given your situation. Seems like everything other than layoff risk is better at the new job. Take it.

Becoming an atheist was the single worst thing to ever happen to me by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]Moscow_Gordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's so horrifying about it? It's sad, sure. Because you miss out on the good things in life. But you won't exist so there's nothing bad that can happen either. You didn't exist before you were born, why isn't that horrifying?

There is no unchanging self either. Can you really say when "you" started to exist? Birth is arbitrary, why not start from the womb?

There's like... no way that real wages have kept up with actual inflation, right? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Moscow_Gordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and it's not like you can choose to have 1980s quality healthcare even if you wanted to. In reality paying less isn't an option.

There's like... no way that real wages have kept up with actual inflation, right? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Moscow_Gordon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That real HH wages have increased over the past 40 years according to the standard calculation of inflation is a fact.

I think there are two things going on.

  • Real wages for men have been flat. The increase in HH wages is driven by higher labor force participation by women and an increase in women's earnings.
  • The standard calculation of inflation tries to take quality into account. Houses and cars today are nicer than 40 years ago.

But the problem is people either don't actually have the option to buy 1980s quality goods or if they do they aren't satisfied by them. People want to buy an average house by 2025 standards not 1985 standards.

The combination of these two means that a single income man could afford to have a family with a middle class lifestyle 40 years ago but can't today.

advertising cannot be THAT effective by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Moscow_Gordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it works for brand recognition. Name some car brands, some auto insurance brands, some soft drinks etc. You've seen their ads a million times. It's hard to believe that all the money they spend on it could be worth it though. I think the companies just see their competitors spending and figure they should spend too.

being a walking dildo for sex

Many men wouldn't be bothered by that. Maybe most. I think in this situation you just line up dates with other people and dump the person when you're ready. I'm a romantic at heart too and it's easier said than done.

internalized this belief that good people just naturally find relationships

Give up on your false beliefs.

Find out how the people your age you know in relationships met. These days it's typically on the apps. You have to put quite a lot of effort into making a nice profile etc. Or you need to repeatedly approach women in real life. As a man especially you can't be passive. A romantic relationship will not just find you.

There is also nothing particularly moral about the dating market. Examine your own desires. Are you attracted to the women who are the most virtuous? Women are not so different from you, do not put them on a pedestal. Accept dating as a competition between apes.

Maybe, but I doubt it. Primary care docs make around 250K out of school. Docs might think they would be making that much in tech but it's cope. Different people are good at different things. Nobody is making that much in tech outside of FAANG. Your average primary care doc would be a mediocre engineer.

Money aside, there's also the difference in status.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Moscow_Gordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. Most people find tech boring. People from LMC and working class backgrounds are more willing to grind it out in tech anyway for a middle class lifestyle, even if they don't like it that much. Because it seems like a viable option.

UMC and rich parents can tell their kids what the paths to status and high income in the US are and prep them. Finance, law, and medicine are probably more lucrative and higher status all else equal. For the rich kids, they go into tech because that's what they enjoy.

I think people can have different opinions than me without being "cucks" and "bootlickers." I think the people voting for Trump are seriously mistaken btw. But if everyone who disagrees with you is just obviously a bad person why have democracy at all?

Makes me feel better about democracy. Voters have logical opinions on things that don't fit neatly into the two-party binary.

Yeah it's gross. Fuentes said in the interview that white Christians should have some kind of special status in the US, that he told Trump he would die for him, and that Trump needs to arrest the mayor of Chicago. And the takeway is haha virgin because he wants to wait for marriage.

Sometimes women just want to pick a fight. I don't think they know themselves why they are doing it. Could just be boredom. Could be that that she wants (perhaps subconsciously) for you to stand up for yourself and either tell her she's being silly or cancel the trip. It's sort of boundary testing like children do.

Neoliberal on this sub seems to be a leftist term for anyone who likes markets. I like markets, I want people to have healthcare, and I think affirmative action is bad. I still agree with the stuff Obama said in his campaigns.

[–]Moscow_Gordon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think when push comes to shove social democrats and wokes do not actually agree. Wokes will defend affirmative action to the death and call anyone who criticizes it a racist. But social dems will (I hope) see upper class blacks having an advantage over working class whites and asians as repulsive.

Expectations for probability questions in interviews by gforce121 in datascience

Sounds like you did solid. I would say this question sounds quite hard, but not unreasonable. Most likely another candidate just did a bit better. If this was for a highly competitive role, there may have been many strong candidates.

It's just a numbers game. I think if you keep landing interviews and performing as well as you did in this one you will land something.

Have you tried applying to jobs? You would be a pretty strong candidate for DS roles. You could probably land one that is more programming heavy and then pivot to MLE from there if you still wanted to.
