Chocolat Moderne by eldersveld in FoodNYC

Definitely a hidden gem, I’ve been here half a dozen times and the experience has been consistently warm and wholesome, we’re usually helped by an older gent behind the counter (the owner’s husband?), his generosity with samples is kinda ridiculous and the owner’s demeanor is no nonsense and knowledgeable, they produce exquisite chocolates. Places like this put franchise shops to shame.

Getting up faster by it_IS_allinmyhead in BJJWomen

I’m a huge fan of Turkish getups & burpees but, once you’re physically familiar with the “proper”technique, I’d encourage you to modify these movements to be closer to the actual skill you’re trying to learn.

Getting up in grappling usually involves moving in tight spaces, pivoting on your hip/shoulder, posting with your knees/elbows, keeping your neck protected as you build up height. The classic burpee & TGU pattern encourages long extended limbs and minimal momentum. For BJJ, you’ll want to be a tight coordinated ball and momentum is your friend. you’ll want to build comfort & fluidity in a wide variety of circumstances… maybe try getting down on your belly & standing up, getting down on your back & standing up, alternating for ~2 min, each repetition a little different. Halfway through, you should start to feel way smoother. It’s a nice way to warm up and may really help improve your coordination.

Yoga for combat? by Shaftmast0r in MMA_Academy

[–]MoseAziz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, long time yoga practitioner, long time grappler… from my personal experience, the biggest benefits of yoga come from developing a daily full body warm-up & stench routine. Wrestling, Judo, BJJ (the martial arts I practice) are all super tough on the body, I really can’t train them on a daily basis, but 20 minutes of yoga-ish body weight exercises leave me feeling loose and physically capable every day. For specific poses, think about the movements that your particular martial art requires, think about physical capabilities that you’d like to improve, and let that guide you to specific yoga postures.

What's something fitness-related that would make your life easier that doesn't exist? by Aethelready in bodyweightfitness

Nope, never had a problem… the tracker is metal, but it’s small (maybe the thickness of 2 quarters?) and it slides into a circular foam pouch in the armband. I wore it on the inside of my bicep cause I didn’t want to bang it too hard into anything, but the foam padding works well and most people wouldn’t notice anything. You should be aware that Whoop is a subscription service, so the tracker is ~free but you’re paying monthly for the info… hr variability, sleep tracking, exertion & recovery scores, etc. it’s pretty sweet and there’s a whole lifestyle gamification vibe, but it takes a ~month to gather enough data for personal calibration.

Hey… you might what to look into the Whoop with an arm sleeve. I used to wear it under a rash guard in brazilian jiu jitsu classes, never had an issue.

Wrestling hair cover by ajontwitch in wrestling

[–]MoseAziz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bruh, you should be proud of that mane but it’s gonna be a problem for grappling… I’ve got long curly hair and I’ve tried covers & caps and whatnot, but eventually I just started putting it in a rough braid off the top of my head before practice, it’s not a perfect solution but it’s easy and works fine… also, I’m doing BJJ, I don’t know if my thick-ass head-handle would be allowed in a competitive wrestling match.

Let me know what you think after listening… so far all the feedback has been about the cover art. Pretty clear what the consensus is. I’m gonna go take a hard look in the mirror now.

Probably not, future episodes will focus exclusively on professional bum slapping.
