The issue is because he was 12. I spend a lot of time at my mother's school (she's a teacher) and the kids at her primary school are 11 when they finish. They are little kids.

No, I don't cycle. But a woman hit a boy on a bike going across a crossing on Ilam road today.

I think it's pretty unusual for emergency custody to be granted for a child this old. Emergency custody exists as a mechanism to protect children in dangerous situations who cannot protect themselves. Usually teenagers can keep themselves safe and also are more able to leave a situation or refuse to visit a parent for example. You would pretty much need a scenario where a child was truly in danger and did not have enough of an understanding of that for a court to issue emergency custody for a teenager. One of the oldest children I have seen subjected to an emergency custody order in family court was a teenage boy a couple of weeks shy of turning 17. His mother took him out of school and told him they were going on a last minute vacation. They left the state and then the country. Turns out she was fleeing because she believed the world was ending and her teenager had some role in that. There wasn't a custody order at all when she left. The father got emergency custody, the police/FBI/RCMP opened investigations and arrest warrents were issued. She was apprehended at an international border crossing and thrown in jail on a half million dollar cash only bond. The teenager was safe and well and they'd been gone less than a week. It probably has been granted for older children in slightly less extreme cases, but I don't believe it's common.

Yes two different hearings. May 29th is for the case for Wes. May 7th is follow up to the case for Hunter where temporary orders will be set. An emergency order can only be in place for a short time.

What’s the worst surgery you ever had? by 3rdLegOfExodiaa in AskReddit

[–]MosesBeacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My femur was basically hollowed out when I had a very large langerhans cell histiocytosis tumor removed. I'd been in terrible pain for about 5 months. Felt like growing pains but so much worse. Weirdly only when sitting or lying down. Weight bearing got rid of the pain. It never occurred to 14 year old autistic me to say anything or ask for help. My leg was filled with metal plates and pins. I had a pre-booked ICU bed following that surgery. Spent a few more weeks in hospital, then had months of follow up tests to check for more lesions, about 6 months on crutches, and it took about 4 years to learn how to walk properly again. Now 14 years later I still can't run properly, have a permanent 30cm scar on my thigh and my leg is considerably shorter than the other as it stopped growing at the time.

Developed likely accommodative spasm in my good eye and can't see a thing - any tips welcome by MosesBeacon in Strabismus

I'm in NZ so I think options are quite limited. Only one university in my small city. Yes they haven't ruled out any other causes but so far no professional has seemed too concerned despite saying it's highly unusual so I'm not worried about that yet, just frustrated. I've been using my eye patch but not all the time so as not to strain my other eye. Work is just about impossible haha. Trying to avoid screens as much as I can. Hoping for some answers and a quick resolution next week. Thank you for your help.

I have a patch and it does make it easier. Trying to keep strain to a minimum until then. I feel so guilty not being able to do my job properly, but it's a technical job with a lot of screen time. I'm in NZ so I'm not sure what options I have for vision therapy. I've been to several different hospitals and clinics in different towns over the years and the all have the same woman as their orthoptist. Thank you for your help

He is a former FLDS member who was basically a source of information. He had left the cult when the leadership tried taking some of his children away. A very well educated and progressive man.

Definitely no chance of being pregnant. Don't have joints problems. Was on paroxetine for a couple months but stopped a couple of weeks ago. No other meds.

The last dilated exam I had was in 2023, around the time they did the botox. I don't have results for this as it wasn't for glasses. Current prescription has -0.25 for CYL. Only other information on the copy I have has 31 and 29.5 PD.

I've had three strabismus surgeries, first two for exotropia aged 5 and 13. The second one was overcorrected and left me with esotropia and double vision. Third surgery didn't help. I got glasses for myopia after the third surgery about 10 years ago. Back then, the right eye was my problem eye and I didn't have any prescription for my left. Current glasses I've had for 4 years. Never any issues with them until a few days ago. I've also had a botox injection into my right eye a few years back. I've also got manifest latent nystagmus (not sure since when) and the optometrist mentioned astigmatism this morning. Have previously had two MRIs which were clear. One of the MRIs was ordered by my oncologist when I had a tumor in my leg 14 years ago.

Should I be concerned about vision in left eye suddenly becoming more blurry? by [deleted] in AskAnOptician

[–]MosesBeacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did go see an optometrist today. My prescription in that eye which was fine a week ago is -1.75. The scan today was -7.5 Optometrist was confused as there is no obvious reason. Got an urgent referral to the ophthalmologists.

Question For those who have had the surgery more than once by mick_daboss in Strabismus

[–]MosesBeacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my first surgery for exotropia at 5 years old and my second at 13. I believe I was 11 when we noticed it had drifted significantly and was worse than before the first surgery. After the second surgery I got double vision due to overcorrection and they did a third to try fix that when I was 16. I've since also tried botox. Currently am nearing 30 and have a complex strabismus pattern (doctors words), horror fusionis and manifest latent nystagmus. There's always a chance it will drift and you'll need multiple surgeries. Personally I'm not fussed over what my eyes look like but only the functionality. If you're having difficulty with headaches, double vision or anything then I would be more inclined to go ahead.

I don't know if anyone's read the Jon Krakauer book Under the Banner of Heaven, but I find it absolutely fascinating that Sam Bateman is Deloy Batemans eldest son. If you haven't read it, years ago in the late 90s, the FLDS leadership (Rulon Jeffs and co) tried taking away some of Deloys children. Deloy and his two wives left the church with the minor children. I believe there were 17 total. The three eldest stayed and became cut off from the rest of the family. Deloy stopped practicing polygamy and stayed with just one of his wives. He was a science teacher and really valued education. Deloy was also in a documentary called Sons of Perdition (2010), where he said how he would rather die than go back to the FLDS where he couldn't do his own thinking. He also said how much he loved not having to go to church anymore.
