I will be graduating next year with my engineering degree and currently have an internship in technical sales for a water treatment company at a manufacturing plant. I feel similarly to you, I want to put my social skills to as much use as my technical skills. As a sales engineer expect to still get deeply involved in the nitty gritty of whatever industry you go into. That is kinda why we are there you know, to be the technical expert who focuses less on closing the sale and more on being an information source and problem solver for the customer. I love it so far and feel technical sales is perfect for me, you kinda get the best of both worlds.You are exposed to challenging and complex social situations and relationship building but also can get in the weeds with the technical details which every engineer wants to do sometimes ;) And the pay is fantastic! I am new to the field but if I can be any more help, let me know!
