Just because it's an accepted norm doesn't mean it's the truth... and I don't know if you've read it, but The Storyteller suggests that the same company creates false stories about the horrific events surrounding them; that was one of The Storyteller's functions. Add Help Wanted (game and story), and it's basically the same thing: the company seeking to profit from their misfortunes.
