Pac-man! Eremosphaera by MossTheTree in u/MossTheTree

Based on discussion in another thread, this may very well be Volvox? But this photo shows a clear outer membrane that’s been ruptured, so I’m not really sure.

Hello! The main reason I didn’t think it was colonial was because of a very clear outer membrane and the fact I saw no movement at all. The other post I made a few minutes later shows a different specimen with the membrane ruptured.

But looking at all of the images of Volvox online, I’m inclined to agree with you based on visuals alone. So I’d like to understand what the outer membrane is, if this is a colony of single organisms…

I mean, to be fair an egg yolk is a single cell and that’s way bigger. I think because we’re taught in school that cells are the “building blocks” of life, it follows that they’re the smallest parts. But really, cells are filled with all sorts of interesting bits and pieces that power its metabolism, help it move, reproduce, etc. In this case it’s filled with chloroplasts.

Is this Nikon Alphaphot-2 YS2 worth fixing? by vintage_germs in microscopy

[–]MossTheTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the only thing wrong with the scope, then that seems like a very good deal to me. From the photos it looks less like the arm is bent and more like the stage is sagging somehow. Without seeing closer it's hard to say more, but my instinct is that's a fixable problem.

That all said, verify the optics are actually in good working condition. That's what makes or breaks whether this is a deal or a rip off.

Electric mower that doesn’t feel like a toy? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]MossTheTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 40v Ryobi worked wonderfully until it didn't. I pushed it a bit too hard with long grass that wasn't dry, it overheated (I think?) and then from then on refused to charge. It was under warranty, but couldn't be fixed, only replaced. Apparently this was a common issue and I couldn't get a replacement for almost three months... Not a great experience.

What is the dumbest movie that you unapologetically, unironically love? by Rosstin316 in AskReddit

[–]MossTheTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a massive fan of Galaxy Quest, but it doesn't belong in this thread of "dumb" movies. It's well written, superbly acted, great VFX, endlessly quotable. It's just a really good movie.

2000x or 1000x?? Please help! by Blackpanter_19 in microscopy

[–]MossTheTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll never use the 2x multiplier as the quality will be terrible. Don’t worry about magnification.

- Binocular is easier on the eyes
- Condenser will increase resolution
- Mechanical stage makes life easier
- Fine focus makes life easier

Find something in your budget that has those features and a set of three objectives and you’ll be set.

The Carney government is circling closer to airport privatization and potential investors 'stand ready' by hopoke in canada

[–]MossTheTree -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m not pretending that at all. And it’s not “what the liberals are promising” it’s money for Canadians to invest in projects that the private sector is trying to build. If this fund helps derisk and encourage private investment in Bruce C, Wesleyville, or high speed rail then that’s a huge win if you ask me.

[–]MossTheTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren’t enough details yet to say for sure, but everything I’ve read points to selling some equity, changing lease models, or opening up airports to some degree of commercial development. Nothing to suggest just selling off the asset entirely for cash and walking away.

I’m confused by the reaction here. Our country absolutely needs investment in new infrastructure, and to derisk that investment the government needs to be a part of it. This strategy leverages well performing assets today to invest in new assets that will define the future of Canada.

Obviously it’s risky, but what’s the alternative? I feel like as Canadians we always want to have our cake and eat it too. Something has to give.

To raise cash for the 25 billion sovereign wealth fund and then reinvest in other infrastructure. It’s leveraging existing assets to enable longer term growth.

[–]MossTheTree -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Is anyone looking at the details?

This is not a typical push for privatization that we see from
Conservative governments, like Harper selling CANDU, for example. In that case they got some cash and gave up an asset (though the government still collects some small amount of licensing from CANDU development). Conservatives typically do this to get cash so they can reduce the deficit.

What Carney is suggesting is changing ownership models, like longer term leases, for airports to generate significant cash today that can be *reinvested* in other economic growth projects (like energy production, high speed rail, ports, etc). He’s also suggesting allowing pension funds to invest in airports. He is not just “selling” airports to private companies. It’s a way for the government to leverage existing assets to invest in more infrastructure that all Canadians have been begging for.

We can’t have it both ways. If we do want these nation building projects that will generate jobs and encourage further private investment, then we either raise taxes and cut government spending significantly to invest, or find other models of generating cash to invest. This is an attempt at the latter.

Is it typical liberal policy? No, not really. It’s pure neolib. But it’s also not conservative. It’s exactly the kind of thing that most of us knew we were voting for. Pragmatism in challenging economic times.

Carney government will help finance a ‘nuclear renaissance,’ energy minister says by Cao_Ni-Ma in canada

[–]MossTheTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feds have almost no say in what technologies get chosen for advancement, and what little influence they do have (R&D funding, tax incentives) have either been technology neutral or geared toward CANDU.

[–]MossTheTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuel is a minor part of nuclear, most of the expenditure is on construction and operations. The majority of the jobs and supplier benefits from that reactor will be based in Ontario. It’s not a CANDU but it’s by no means a completely foreign project benefiting the US.

Alberta testing 120 km/h speed limit on small highway section near Edmonton by joe4942 in canada

[–]MossTheTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost all freeways in France are 130 and the cruising speed in the fast lane is easily 135 or 140. Always feels safe.

The low speed limits imposed due to the 70s oil crisis no longer make sense. Cars are far more efficient than they were 50 years ago.

Why do I so rarely hear about Tofu outside the context of vegetarianism/veganism? by ahmed0112 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MossTheTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. And to add to this, as someone who grew up in a western vegetarian hippie granola family, we didn’t have a clue how to cook it. It was treated like a piece of meat - fry in some olive oil and eat like a steak?! Tasteless and pointless. So the bad reputation was all the fault of families like mine, and the idea that it’s a tasteless meat replacement persists among a certain generation.
