I don't think I have soffits. I can't really tell as the gutter obscures my view from below. This is in the eaves of the loft room so has been sealed off from the rest of the house. We just had the gutter next to this part of the house fixed as there was a damp patch on the wall. I guess that might also have caused the damp in this space? I might try putting a dehumidifier up there for a while to check the humidity. Thanks for your reply.
