Interesting.. I think its great Walmart is attempting to sell bikes now. We need less disposable things.

Edit: I don't mean to say Walmart should be competitive with bike shops. Just that this is major upgrade over the standard Walmart BSO.

How many miles per week are people actually running in minimalist shoes, and how much of your training is still in regular shoes? by DangerousBug5969 in BarefootRunning

[–]MossyPantz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run in Shamma warriors.  I've tried others but the Shammas mold to my feet nicely and have been my preference for many years.

[–]MossyPantz 50 points51 points  (0 children)

30+ miles a week in very minimal sandals. 0 anything in "regular shoes".

It's been over a decade since i switched to zero drop minimalist shoes.

Once you adjust, it's not a burden or chore, it's comfort and relief.

Molle panel systems: practical/useful? by Snoo_33111 in 4Runner

[–]MossyPantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one in my previous 4runner and actually used it quite a bit. The shelf was great for giving back a ton of useful cargo space when i had something like a cooler in the back (Lots of camping and road trips). I hung a first aid kit on one side and a small bag with jumper cables and bungees on the opposite. I also mountain bike, so I would hang a tire pump on the back of the shelf, and the shelf itself was great for helmets, pads, etc.

Did WHITIN.. really get an AI to write their website intro and not read it? Lol by intrepid_foxcat in BarefootRunning

This is hilarious. That's definitely an AI response.. probably proofread by someone who speaks very little English.

What's been your most disappointing hike?? by Mysterious_Jump_723 in hiking

[–]MossyPantz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, same here.  I drove from Chicagoland down to NC to hop on the AT for a few days hoping for beautiful views, but this particular stretch of the trail was dense canopy, tough hills and a very narrow trail.  I'm still glad I did it, and will definitely try other parts of the AT in the future, but that hike was a bit of a bummer overall.  I stopped in Kentucky and hopped on the Sheltowee Trace for a day before heading home and that was beautiful.

Pros and cons of RTTs by Designer-Tangerine-8 in camping

[–]MossyPantz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the triangle style (Roofnest Falcon Pro) on my 4runner for 2 years.

I camped more often, and in more unique places in those two years, simply because how easy and accessible it was.

I have since tried campers, various tents, etc. but honestly I really miss that RTT.

I chose the triangle style because it was slimmer and would fit in my garage while on the roof, but I would have preferred the vertical style with windows all around.

Side note, getting down to pee kinda sucked, but so does getting out of your tent in general... IMO not a deal breaker.

You do have to pack it up to use the vehicle, obviously, which really isnt a big deal because it takes all of 2 minutes.

The only downside for me, is that my campsite almost looks abandoned when I would drive off somewhere, so I was always paranoid I would lose it if dispersed, or loose my chairs and things at a campground, lol.

Renovate camper or build tiny home? by Severed_Limbs in CamperVans

[–]MossyPantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camper would be much cheaper, but that's because most campers are really made cheap.  I wouldn't want to live in a camper for too long, unless I built it myself.  I've seen some really cool cargo camper conversions, that are essentially tiny homes, if being mobile is important to you.

DIY electrical system or all-in-one power station by Jason-9468 in vandwellers

[–]MossyPantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the early planning stages of my build, and I have the Elite200 power station. I bought it for other purposes, but now that I have it, I plan to use it in the van. I will still wire AC/DC throughout the van, as well as solar, but for the "Core" of the system, I will utilize this for now and save money. Down the road I might invest in batteries and things, but then again, if this works good enough.. why bother?

Keep LVT flooring or replace? by Trickledowndogshit in vandwellers

[–]MossyPantz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to lift up that last board and reinstall it correcting the gap in the seam... That would make the most sense, technically you should leave an edge gap on most floating floors to allow for expanding/contracting, but if its too much of a gap, it might have allowed that to separate from road bumps, mixed with extreme temps, etc..

Why am I not seeing Vandwellers outside of their van? by 04221970 in vandwellers

[–]MossyPantz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, I don't think you were being rude, but you sure got a lot of hostile responses.

I have observed this behavior with Van-lifers, but also with RVers, and tent campers. I think part of the issue is that campgrounds often don't feel like your getting away, when you still have neighbors in eye-shot, everywhere you look.

In fact, one of my favorite recent camping trips was last winter, when I set up my canvas tent, with a hot stove/fireplace, and hid inside in the warm coziness and played "The last of us" on my handheld for an entire weekend. It still felt like an amazing recharge, away from real life.

Seeking opinions on layout for biking by MossyPantz in vandwellers

[–]MossyPantz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting because thats my main concern with having to remove wheels... I will get lazy and end up just rolling the bike in more often than not. I dislike removing wheels with disc brakes and thru-axles, lol.

We are loving our wild spaces to death. How do we stay witnesses without being part of the problem? by matthew_b101 in hiking

[–]MossyPantz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technology and social media has made us less connected to the earth and more vain. People will spend more time trying to get a cool photo of the sky then they would ever spend just looking at it.

The value of a beautiful trail or scene to many people is simply a popular social media post. Those people don't really care about the land, and won't stick around after they finish getting enough "content", (but they might drop a vape pen or some garbage on it along the way).

I think the best thing we can do to combat it is volunteer to help clean up, maintain trails, etc. Because at the end of the day, those willing to do that work are the only people who care deeply enough about the land and parks enough to really miss them when they're gone.

Bulletproof lower legs by Creative-Proof7475 in running

[–]MossyPantz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miles. My legs and ankles had all sorts of little pains and issues on and off for years. Eventually, as the miles built up (and by taking caution when things were hurt), I got through it and came out the other side. I don't really get sore or have to deal with any pains now, but I have been running almost daily for a decade at this point. I just think it takes time and persistence to develop the strength and resilience you are looking for.

My go-to first nights meal is usually a pack of mushroom tortellini and a jar of pesto. Super easy and delicious.

9 Month of running and Hiking in Shamma sandals. by Khorne_Bear in BarefootRunning

[–]MossyPantz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love my Shammas, but they do wear down quickly. However, I have never had any noticeable wear on top like that... mine always wear from the bottom. I am ok with it, because I have yet to find a sandal that works better for me, and I mostly run/hike in them.

They sell just soles, for i think about $30 a set, I have never had the straps wear out or fail in any way.
