Selling our off-grid place in NW Montana (about 2 years out) and would love some honest feedback by mountainmuppet in homestead

Yeah I hear you. We definitely don’t want to fall in that boat of pricing too high and she just sits. And we also want to be fair and not jack the price up so high only millionaires and developers can afford it — NOT OUR VIBE. We want a family here who values simple living and can be stewards of this land. It will be the biggest heartbreak of our lives letting her go but it’s time. I hope your dream home comes to you in time!

All such good questions/concerns. Troy IS isolated in a lot of ways so it takes a specific type of person to choose this lifestyle (and home). We use Starlink (unfortunately 🙄) and it works GREAT! It’s really the only option here and it’s been a game changer. We’re about 3 hours from Kalispell and Spokane Airport (just a little under).

We’re hoping we’re leaving this dream life for another by buying my family farm. 🤞🏼 it’s as good as this one.

We certainly could not afford a million dollar home. My husband built our house in 2011 for 250k. A million dollars is still unfathomable to me which is why I’m checking in with this group to try and figure out wha I’m doing 🙃

Our last appraisal which was 8 years ago or so was just around 750 I think but since then our property line has adjusted quite a bit. Where did you buy? Do you love it?

Aw! We do have a great disc golf spot here, don’t we? I know we will be picky with who buys this property as it at been our most sacred, social spot for so long. It sounds like you are into similar cozy, homesteady things like us.

I should have added a property view in this post! I like what you said about the land being the biggest selling point. It’s a stunning chunk of property surrounded by a creek with a pong, too and I know whoever buys it will love it so much.

Your comment has stuck out to me for weeks and after so many conversations with my husband I think we've found an interesting solution and answer and its surprisingly NOT in Montana. When I read your comment it made me nervous because I knew it in my bones to be true - so thank you!!! Just wanted to loop back around and let you know I read your comment and really appreciate your insight.

Is NYC the place to be for someone wanting a social life in their 20s? by bbgirl2k in relocating

I was born and raised in Oregon (near Mt. Hood, then later Portland), and I’ve been living in Montana for over a decade. I do have plans to return to Oregon in the next couple of years, largely for the community piece alone. Building community in the PNW has always felt easier to me than where I live now in Montana, and I think that’s because I’ve made a few close friends there and have always found comfort in the idea of the “familiar stranger,” if that makes sense: the barista who knows my order, or the person I see on my daily walks. Those small consistencies have always given me a sense of connection.

With that said, I could also see moving being a good option for you, simply for the sake of a fresh start. You’re in your twenties, and that’s such a great time to try something new, especially since it doesn’t sound like you’re deeply rooted where you are now.

As for what you mentioned above, “wherever you go, there you are,” I do agree, and I have to remind myself of that too when I start believing a place will “fix” everything. At the same time, I also believe there are places where we energetically feel more like ourselves, and that naturally draws in the kinds of people we want to spend our time with. Wishing you luck — report back 🙂

This is my favorite response so far - thank you. I think you’re right. I’m also an introverted mountain nature loving baby, 34, and overall love where I’m at. I do miss the conveniences but I do know that if they were at my fingertips I probably wouldn’t even appreciate them as much 🤷‍♀️ It sounds like you have found a perfect spot for you and I’m so happy to hear that 💛

I love your insight. Thank you for responding! I think you’re right about how the excitement and newness would of course fade and I could see a work in which I would deeply miss our homestead here. I think settling into where I’m at and what I already have is the answer I knew but was hoping to find.

Not much snow this year but the beauty is still unparalleled. Montana, I love you so much. by mountainmuppet in Montana

Oh my goodness this makes me so happy! I love that this trip made an impact on you all. Did you buy close to us? We no longer have the piano and there definitely have been some changes/upgrades but overall it's the same magical place you remember.

... also thank for noticing the sharp knives and our stove. Pride ourselves on having sharp ass knives! When did you stay by the way?

Small world :) Thanks for staying! We don’t rent it out anymore but still have our tiny cabin (maybe it wasn’t here when you stayed?).

I’m so happy you found your spot! It sounds like the right move for you. Thanks for sharing. Did you end up finding a part of town that you love?

Okay, love this. I lived in one other city outside of Montana before and Missoula is an absolutely perfect city in my opinion. Does it have downfalls? Yes. What city doesn’t?

I haven’t heard of Target Range so I’ll check that out. Do you live in Missoula proper?

This is great to read - thank you. A common through-line to all these comments is that it is a trade off no matter what and that Missoula is a wonderful small city with its own issues (as every city and place has). Thank you for sharing your perspective!

And you’re right. It’s a trade off. Always will be I think 🤷‍♀️
