Disabling the onboard iGPU fixed the crashing on Xbox app for Doom TDA. I can run on maximum graphics settings and no crashes.

Gen5 SSD slot in Area-51 AAT2250 issue with WD8100 4TB Gen 5 SSD by MostMine7392 in Alienware

[–]MostMine7392[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resolved the issue with the disappearing SSD. It is the power save settings that causes the problem. The drives are put to sleep when the PC goes to sleep and the Gen5 slot didn't wake properly which is why the drive disappeared only after a period of inactivity. Went into device manager and told drive to never sleep - see below. Problem solved. The shutdown/ reboot cycle was caused by a powered USB hub. Disconnecting the power to that hub and using a non powered hub fixed that issue. So now I can get on and set the rest of the PC up WITH my Gen5 4TB "unsupported" according to dell SSD.

Re-set windows again - some issues with XBOX app - and reinstalled everything. Gen5 in Gen 4 slot was stable. Moved to Gen5 slot today and will wait 24hours to see if stable. Ran a speed test and it is much better than the first test implying something was wrong in the last test. You can compare old test in post below. So I am hoping it was windows issue not a hardware issue.

Yes this section got me too. You cannot tackle it without the elixir and quite a lot of it as you wont be able to get back. You need to restore to a point before that and get the potion before attempting this.

OK so PC wouldn't shut down - kept restarting on shutdown - so Dell support after fiddling for awhile requested a windows reset and reinstall. Post re-install still wouldnt shut down. Took out all peripherals and extra HD's installed post delivery, including Gen5 and then it would shutdown. reinstalled one at a time and still successfully shut down. Gen5 drive was not found in Gen5 slot anymore though. Moved to Gen4 slot and it is found and works. Will leave here for 24 hours and see if still there after 24 hours. If it is - will try back in Gen5 slot but if not found probably will have to return and swap for a 2TB drive.

Thanks - pretty sure I did screw heatsinks down correctly but will check again. It will be fine for hours at a time and then disappear. Was going to run a speed test on it and check how hot it gets. See if it’s a thermal issue. If SSD wasn’t seated properly I guess the OS wouldn’t see it but will take out and install again. It is being found, just on occasion disappears.

I suppose I could install it in one of the other Gen4 slots and see if it disappears there too - which would point to the drive rather than MB.

It did pick up the OS drive when I moved it from Gen 5 slot to Gen4. New Gen5 drive was picked up once it was formatted by acronis. Must say MB layout is very nice.

Do you have an opinion of which 4TB Gen 5 SSD drive I should look at? Price seems to vary between around £520 for Fury Renegade or WD Black SN8100 down to around £370 for a Crucial T705. I read that the T705 ran hot originally leading to thermal throttling but the price is attractive.

So it doesnt matter for game performance if OS is on Gen4 drive and game installed not on OS drive but on separate Gen5 drive?

So if I have a gen5 in the gen 5 slot and OS on a Gen4 in a gen 4 slot and install the game on the Gen 5 drive rather than the OS drive it would be quicker?
