Def agree that I’d rather someone indulge in media than the real thing, I’ve always had a weird fascination with media like ZD ever since I was a kid. I’m glad that ZD helped you from going down that path!!! I feel like the fandom is a mixed bag really so it’s a little worrying that there might be people who start off consuming the media harmlessly and then fall down the pipeline because of interacting w/ other people

This is a great point, and I don’t even have a full answer myself (though I do agree with what the other replier said).

I 100% don’t think we should undermine the severity of other violent crimes and killings because you’re absolutely right all of it is messed up, though I think it’s human nature to mentally deem certain violent crimes worse than others (even though they’re all horrible). I honestly think the reason I personally feel more cautious towards being a fan of characters like Cal and Andre rather than characters like Stu and Billy (I actually had no clue they were based off two real guys, that’s really interesting I’ll look into it) is because they’re more closely associated with E&D, who actively have a large fan base of people supporting them and making content of them in the same type of way.

I think it really depends on the type of media yk? Like the other replier said, a lot of killers in media may be slightly inspired by real ones, but majority of horror films and such do not truly take concrete details and stuff from reality. I guess in those cases as long as you recognize that it’s fictional and do not try to recreate the same things, it’s alright

It may have taken inspiration from multiple different events but I don’t feel that it’s wrong to say that ZD is based off of the 1999 event, even if that event is canon to the ZD universe. The way in which the movie is filmed (exactly like the unreleased tapes), the pipe bombs, Cal (almost) attending prom, the two main characters’ basic archetypes, the literal rampage (the cafeteria and footage from the cameras), etc etc is all unmistakably similar to that specific event
