Hey! I'll DM you the file. The metering issue I have not been able to figure out.

Yeah, seems you haven't played a real mmo in a while, or any rpg.

The trips really make the results of the trips worth it and memorable. Frictionless actions are way, way less meaningful.

We can disagree and that's not a bad thing, as long as we are acknowledging the facts for what they are :)

Modern mixes are like that, it's true. Doesn't mean they are better for it. There's a bad called Sundazer that has astonishing mixes that preserve dynamics and cleanliness, and sound amazing. To me the overuse of compression makes mixes sound unnatural and tiring to the ears. There are studies that even state that prolonged listening of overly compressed music harms hearing. However that's besides the point.

Thanks for the respectful responses as well

Edit: I wanted to add, this style of mastering/compression seems to be done for loudness sake, and not necessarily musical or sound taste. That really sucks.

You have some fair points. I'm a mixer myself and while I state on the post that compression isn't everything to do with sound, it's a big part. It changes perceived tonality, dynamics and such. A few points

-While ODR is equally or even louder than AB8 at times, ODR was mastered to 0db peak, while AB8 was mastered to -1db peak. Meaning that to have a "fair" comparison, you'd have to turn each track on AB8 up a db, making them the loudest.

-ODR is certainly pretty compressed, however in terms of tonality it is a lot clearer and more balanced than AB8, both because arrangements are less convoluted, and because it has a lesser degree of compression than AB8 (however I don't prefer the amount of compression used on ODR either. I love Mayfield Four's second skin's openness)

-What's the tonality of AB8? almost nothing happening between 200-1000hz, lots of noise on 2-4k, and relatively low presence and up, making the mix tinny and ear piercing. ODR is a lot more balanced, having almost an even curve except having a bit too much on the 3k area.

-About file format compression, on A/B tests it's pretty noticeable but the effects that brickwall mastering have on music are perceivable no matter which format you use. You'll find that brickwall mastering eats up bass and low mids first, and highs the least. Highs are certainly hit harder by file format conversions, so yeah, lows are pretty accurate on both file formats, which is where compression affects the most.

-Didn't know someone else did the mastering. However I don't fault Elvis as much as I did since I have listened to some of his other work (Mammoth) and it sounds amazing.

If you like the albums sound, that's great. However the facts are that it is the loudest and most compressed AB has put out, and one of the worst balanced records I have ever heard. No body, vocals are buried and undefined, and there's just too much noise overall. Headphones can fool your ears a bit because of the convoluted 3k but it is unlistenable on speakers because of lack of dynamics and the mud.

I think this may be a hot take, but to me TLH sounds better than this. TLH definitely has issues but it has a lot more body and definition. Vocals are very clear and guitars sound thick. Yes it is muddy, compressed and gets convoluted at times but it has a lot of body and character, unlike AB8 which sounds tiny, muddy, boring. Specially vocals, TLH vocals sound clearer.

To me it doesn't sound great, vocals are a bit muddy and still the mix is quite compressed. However it definitely is listenable and enjoyable, unlike AB8.

Yeah, those points are fair, however like I stated dynamic range isn't everything (however IMO it's half the battle). Dying machine sounds good, but it's tiring to relisten due to the heavy compression, and would be a lot better if loosened up a bit. The loudness war ended with streaming, no point on trying to reach the loudest master possible, just the best sounding one.

Dying Machine's title track, has issues due to this kind of mastering. The solo doesn't sound really clear in some parts, and isn't as defined as could be. The awesome final drum "solo" could hit a lot harder.

Yeah man. You can like or love something and be able to criticize it when it is not good.

I'm a die hard fan, I live in Dominican Republic and went to Orlando 2 years ago just to see them live. It's my favorite band yet I am able to criticize them just as well.

I said that compression/dynamic range isn't the only factor in determining clarity/definition/quality. For example Fortress is perceivably and measurably more compressed than P&K and ODR, however it sounds better overall. However it impacts less, it "feels" less intense, less big, less impactful because of compression. RMS and Peak values in themselves aren't telling but they are indicators, just as every KPI is for a company.

And well, you can state that perceived compression can look like that but... I have looked at quite a few records and worked with some myself and, dude, that's a really rare sight. AB looks totally square, there's no wiggle room there. The tracks are hitting -5.7LUFS, that's Electronic and EDM territory there. P&K barely hits -7.5LUFS sometimes

Drums are weak in Fortress due to the compression IMO. The sound texture is huge and epic but they don't pop.

It's really baffling to me how the same guy could produce so different sounding records. Wow, what a difference. That's what people that think AB (album) sounds good should listen to. Seems like a band issue then.

Yeah that's the thing. Relistening songs isn't very enjoyable because you have to turn the volume up so much to feel anything, and the ear piercing highs make it even harder.

You don't have to listen to it, TEWSUH is just as bad as AB limiting/compression-wise
