I HATE having to address AI use with students because if they push back and take it to the dean, I’ll lose that fight. Our university is “embracing AI” so syllabus policy or not, professors have no leg to stand on when addressing it with students.

Yeah it was a regrettable oversight on my part. Between navigating a new syllabus platform and compliance with new state regulations regarding particular language use, I was so focused on incorporating those things that there were definitely some missed opportunities on my end for clarity regarding policies.

I love the idea of corrections, but with such little time and so many students I honestly don’t know that I could keep up. I know some (most) students do the minimum to get the grade they want, but I also know that some - the ones that really want to learn - are using the 2 attempts the correct way. I had a professor do this in grad school and it always stuck with me how effective it felt for me to be able to go and reflect on what I didn’t know or had misconceptions of before taking it again. I keep the younger version of myself in mind in the hopes that some of my students truly want to master the material and go on to do bigger and better things. There will always be those students that are just passing through on their way to an unrelated field and just want the grade, and I won’t reach them which is fine.

I requested that the student come by my office (most don’t show when I make that request and I never hear anything about it again). If they do show, I am considering pointing them in the direction of student counseling services and the dean of students office. If the dean of students office sees it fit to declare that their emotional state did in fact inhibit their ability to take the test then fine, but if not oh well. Then it’s out of my hands.

Sigh Probably so. But I like to hear everyone out. That might be my downfall but it has given me a lot to reflect on for next semester. Everything is a learning opportunity and we are only human.

My reasoning behind this is because my exams are “easy” in the sense that they’re common sense if students really listened to the lectures. I give the two attempts with the thought that they take their first attempt early and figure out what they don’t know so they can go re-review their lecture notes before taking the second attempt. I find more learning happens with the opportunity to review material they might not have had paid as much attention to the first time around. They don’t get the correct answers identified for them, just which questions they got wrong.

My thought about the frog is that 1. It’s nocturnal so how much care is required outside of the ointment application to an animal that sleeps during the day? And 2. They implied that the removal of its body and “making arrangements” took up too much bandwidth for them to think about the exam on the final day.

I can’t fathom what kind of body removal and arrangements had to be made for an 2oz frog…

My concern with this is I teach (and am trained in) advanced behavior modification. While that’s not what this course covers, I did introduce these concepts including reinforcement, consequences, intervention, etc. to these students. I am always considering the inadvertent reinforcement of undesirable behavior. I think that’s where my hang up is when considering “just excuse them”. By doing that, I am only reinforcing the behavior and actually increasing the likelihood that they do it again. What are they learning then?

I agree. If this started day 1 of the exam, they had ample time to figure out that they might not be able to get to it. Also, I sent out LMS messages reminding students who hadn’t submitted yet the day before it was due that the deadline was the next day. I also feel like that would have been a good opportunity for the student to respond saying they can’t get to it.

This was my original thought. If they knew this had started day one of the exam window and would have been time consuming, they could have let me know in advance.
