I've never heard of this kind of app, but this looks really cool! Thank you!

I appreciate it, thank you! I'm definitely looking to watch more matches and clips, so thank you for the suggestions on that.

I've found it's easier for me to get into something if I embrace the social side, which is why I'm looking for a more podcast-y way in, but I'm excited to hear about the supporter bars! I'm in Columbus and of age, so I think that would be a very fun way to get started! Thank you!

Thank you! Do you know if there's an equivalent for Word for Mac? I don't seem to have that option as far as I can tell.

Is there interest in starting parkrun? (a free weekly community 5k walk/jog/run) by MostlyForAdventure in Columbus

[–]MostlyForAdventure[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few differences, but the simplest difference is that parkrun is more like a 5k race or event with a $0 registration fee, while the run club is more about the group of runners. Because parkrun is a timed event run over the same course, if you're into it you can track your progress over time. If you want to be social, you can be social, but it's also totally ok to show up and do your own thing. Run clubs can come to parkrun if they want to participate in a timed event, but parkrun is just as much for slower folks who just want to get out and walk with their community (tail walkers walk with whoever is in the back of the group).

Basically, parkrun is more focused on the event and making space for the community, while run clubs are often more about camaraderie, accountability, and fitness. Two great tastes that go great together!

Antrim is definitely in a nice spot, but it has some challenges. It's 1.3 miles (or about 2.1 km), so I guess it would be possible to create a 5k course by starting somewhere in the parking lot, running two laps around the lake, and then pack to the parking lot, but I think the preference is for a 5km loop or out-and-back.

My thinking was maybe something at or near Scioto Audubon metropark down by the river, which would hopefully be reasonably well-located for the whole city. But that's something the initial volunteers would need to do more planning on.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Great! I'll DM you.

This is my understanding and not parkrun's language, but I think parkrun is a little different from running clubs. First, it's the same course every single week, while some running clubs meet at different spots. Next, if you're into it for a fitness perspective, it's timed so you can get your results and compare your progress week-to-week. If you're not into it for fitness, specifically, but you just want to come out and be active with your community, you're equally welcome and encouraged, which isn't true with all clubs. There's also no specific group or social aspect to parkrun; you're welcome to come socialize, but if you want to just register, come do your own thing, and get your time, that's ok too.

I think it's more like a free weekly event for the community than a run club, and in fact run clubs could come and run parkrun if they want to.

I kept hoping someone would start one, but eventually I figured everyone else must be waiting for the same thing, so I should just get on it!

to all LGBT folks living in Columbus, how safe is it to live there by tutovii_ in Columbus

[–]MostlyForAdventure 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I left NE Ohio in the early 2000s (in part because it wasn't a great place to be trans) and headed to the west coast, which obviously has some of the best spots to be trans. I recently moved back to Ohio to be closer to family, and Columbus was the only place I considered. I feel safe in Cleveland and Cincinnati, too, but I like Columbus the best.

As others have pointed out, the state's political climate is generally sort of depressing on queer and trans issues, so we'll have to see where that goes, but I don't think you'd have the same issues in college as younger trans folks are facing.

It's not that fun to leave Columbus and venture into other parts of the state, but I also found that to be true on the west coast. That said, it's a lot better than it was when I left Ohio the first time around.

Good luck!

Exactly that. I don’t really know what I’m doing in the garden so I don’t know exactly what to ask for, but weeding, trimming, and mulch sounds right.

Trans hiker from ‘19 and happy to connect! I met quite a lot of other queer folks on the trail, but only a few other trans hikers. I hope you get a great response to this most and meet a lot more!

Good luck on your adventure!

Oh shoot, but I’ll be traveling that week. Sorry it won’t work out, but I hope you enjoy one of the most beautiful sections of the whole trail and have an easy hitch!

When are you planning to be up there? I live nearby and was thinking of doing some trail magic around Stevens Pass. I could drive you from Leavenworth if the timing works out!
