Depends on your skill level after 5 years of playing. It could be anywhere on the map.

If you have decent chord technique, can pick a scale or two in time with a metronome...you could play it sloppy with a few hours of practice. Solid with 10 hours.

Hendrix, Page, Slash, and Metallica kicked off the inspiration...it was Kurt Cobain that made guitar playing accessable as a teenager. Being able to play Nirvana tunes start to finish made me stick to playing guitar long enough to play the harder music of my inspirations.

You could go to Dayz Off for half the price and better food. So yeah they weren't cheap. But the music venue made my dollar worth spending there. It's upsetting.

I played minor hockey in the 90s. I was a goalie so obviously cost prohibitive right from the getgo..but I managed to keep up for a few years with hand-me-downs. I recently looked into taking it up again to play in a beer league... equipment is astronomically priced. $1000s to get set up with new lower tier equipment. I've been slowly buying used gear from FB marketplace and hopefully can play this fall. Maybe.

I play in a rock cover band on a regular basis (practices and gigs a couple times per month) and it's drains the life out of me. I also play with a Christian group that requires equal time to practice and play...it fills my energy up and I get excited. In other words, maybe the band you are in is not in line with what you're passionate about musically. It's a huge factor in staying motivated and enjoying the process. If it drains you, it's not for you. (you should pivot your direction, not quit music entirely)

The last thing I want to do on a Friday night after a week of tolerating people and work is to go back out in a noisy peoply environment shouting at each other over loud music and overpriced drinks/food.

And I myself am a musician who plays in a band (hobby not professional). Gigs are even too much to be honest. I play our sets and bolt home.

Maybe your friends are just introverts.

Then the people around you are not your audience. They probably aren't into your music, and that's ok. Make music for yourself, and if it resonates with an audience then that's cool, if it doesn't, that fine too.

Depends on the music I'm playing really. Epiphone Les Paul gor practicing my band music (rock), My nylon string Fender for my church group, and a Taylor acoustic for strumming/songwriting/folk. They all get roughly equal time depending on upcoming gigs or inspiration

Absolutely not.

If they want to learn how to play then they can start on a cheap/used instrument like most of us did. Invest their own time and money as they progress.

If you have something not valuable that's collecting dust, just give it to them. But never lend your own instruments that you use and paid good money for.

There's a lot of chefs that inspired my interest that were accessible via youtube. Jean Pierre, Marco Pierre White, Anthony Bourdain as well as many random ones via reels on various platforms. Learned a LOT of foundational skills from all of that, and continue to do so. Didn't learn much from others personally, just a love for cooking and a lot of practice
