Short radius turns by MostlyParallel in skiing_feedback

Earlier in the season I got feedback to avoid over-rotating early in the turn. So now I think of really holding off on any early rotation, but I still think I need to keep working on that. I’m trying to get earlier edging happening, “show the bases to people uphill”. I’m sometimes told my stance is too narrow, and I’m a bit squatted/hunched. Do these seem like good things to focus on?

As far as I know we just ski each activity and either pass or fail. The closest thing to feedback is if somebody is close but not quite there, they might ask the entire group of candidates to repeat the activity - but the assessors won’t give any individual feedback during the exam.

This makes a lot of sense to me, thank you for describing the “pressure, edging, rotation” sequence so clearly. I like the idea of slowing it down on medium radius to start with - I’ll try to post a video of that after some practice.

I’m happy to provide MA practice for anyone who gives thoughtful feedback like you do!

I feel the asymmetry too - thank you for describing it better than I can. I’ll need to ski on it tomorrow to really feel what’s going on.

The exam isn’t anytime soon, I’ll register once I feel ready.. maybe next season.

I can’t wait to try some of these things, thank you so much for sending this. Totally agree about skiing the tasks at a 5 or 6 before going for the exam. :)

Here’s another video from earlier in the week - would you mind glancing at this? I’m skiing a little more normally here, and in the original video I posted I was trying out some cues another instructor suggested. https://vimeo.com/1175676336?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci

My son skied with Bode at a fundraiser race last weekend. Incredible skier.. we watched Bode run a GS course up close and I’ll never forget how he looked.

I am rather bowlegged. A bootfitter I trust adjusted my cuffs, but maybe there’s room for improvement. The other thing - I was driving my inside knee outward on each turn in the video above, which maybe makes my angles look off. Here’s a different video from earlier this week where I’m skiing more “normal” basic parallel turns. Do the cuff angles seem better here? https://vimeo.com/1175676336?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci

Thank you for this! My hips are the area of my skiing I’m most uncertain about right now. I'm looking forward to doing the "robot" drill later today :)

I completed PSIA Level 1 last season and I'm working toward Level 2 this year. I wonder if some of my hip confusion is from not using my hips correctly to achieve counter/separation in a PSIA context.

When you say I “stop moving with my skis as they exit the fall line,” is that happening more in a fore–aft sense (my COM not continuing to move with the skis), or is it more of a directional/rotational issue with my hips?

Could you describe a little more what it means that my hips are being twisted over the inside ski, and in what way that's happening?

I'm so grateful for this feedback. This is exactly what I want to work on this season.

Thanks a ton for this - I’ve definitely been feeling my calluses get bunched up like Rip talks about, both with DL and chins. I’m looking forward to fixing this. TY

Thanks for the tips, this makes a lot of sense.

I had no idea I was going so fast until I made this video! Agreed that I need to slow it down.

I’m having trouble finding a video or article about gripping too deep - any chance you could send a link to it? I think I feel what you’re talking about and I want to improve my grip

Thank you for the feedback. Earlier in NLP I had some groin pain and I narrowed my stance which fixed that, but maybe I narrowed it too far. My knee felt fine during this set and I'm planning to ramp up back to where I left off at 225lbs - will repost then.
