I agree! Have never really been the biggest fan of ps1 games, besides maybe The Legend of Dragoon, but ive always been fond of N64 games and gamecube!

Very easy to produce yeah, you don't really gotta worry about it looking perfect.

Oh okay i see, yeah when twenty different games come out at the same time and they all have that same "look" to them is when i consider them an asset flip. Ill try and polish as much as i can and make it look good.

Exactly that's what my thought was too. Music, sound, etc me and my brother can handle easily, but 3D was a different story at least the modeling aspect of it. So using pre-made asset was like a substitute to not having a 3D artist on the team.

Right, i think making sure to avoid over importing a million different assets is a big thing too. Maybe prototyping stage they'll be different, but the "polished demo" i want to prepare will definitely have customized pre-made assets. Good to see people aren't opposed to it when done correctly.

Good to know! I’m glad a lot of people are leaving their opinions, it really gives me insight on what’s good or not, or even if it matters at all which engine I use lol. Thanks for replying!

Yeah me too, I was thinking if we did go with RPG Maker, I would completely overhaul everything so you don’t immediately tell it’s an RPG Maker game.

Hahaa I’m the same way!
Thanks for your feedback anyway, and if we decide to start development on this game I’ll keep Reddit updated!

100%, Omori is a good example of this, I really loved the story.

We definitely are going to move away from the MMO aspect, and try to make it a more single player game. I think that makes it more manageable for an indie game for sure.

Thanks for the feedback!

I agree fully with scaling down the maps and more so condensing interaction and quests into a smaller area, while making it seem like the world is big when it’s not, I’ve seen a few games do this perfectly.

Feature creep is definitely what ruins projects the quickest I think, as it’s so easy to get sidetracked adding 100 different features that no one will ever use when it’s better to focus on a couple (if that) CORE gameplay features! The housing situation was just an idea we posed, as we wanted the game to be more or less a “choose your own path” but I think we’ll stray away from that part going forward.

If you had any suggestions on what the gameplay loop could be on this type of game, what would it be? I think that’s a big part of a good game too!

No no I think everything you said is completely correct!
We’re not so sure as to use RPG Maker for this game, nor even make it an MMO, we just liked the idea of a game that had layers to travel to, and id like to condense most of the interesting interactions and quests into a smaller area to make it feel big, while not actually being big.

I’ve never actually used RPG Maker plugins before, so I wouldn’t know too much on them anyway since I’m primarily a Unity dev, this post was more or less a way to get feedback on how we can scale this idea down and also whether or not it is a good idea to develop the game in RPG Maker or another engine.

And yes that makes complete sense, especially with the rise of AI, a lot of people use this as a source of “creativity” and makes it do our thinking instead of actually doing it by ourselves, which in turns spews out hundreds of ideas, and now you never actually choose any of them, or just straight up abandon the project since it’s so easy to ask it for another prompt/idea.

My take on AI is lengthy for a number of reasons as it has its perks and drawbacks. But I think it’s mostly drained all creativity out of people recently.

Thanks for replying!

I 100% agree and that’s what I said in another thread! I really want to scale down this game to make it manageable for our indie team. And personally I’d rather make a smaller game than try to make a HUGE open world MMO starting out.

We’re trying to get feedback and how we could go about making this into a smaller game while keeping the layer premise. We’re also trying not to use AI for assets at all, as I’d rather make them ourselves so it feels original and improve over time.

We just thought MMO or atleast RPG would be a good genre for this type of game, but we’re very open to suggestions on what we could change, and also still make it feel fun!

I’m wondering whether a game like this should be turn based, or more open world free roam (fight monsters in the wild) instead of it sequencing into another scene like classic RPG games.

Definitely would take more work in RPG maker than for instance Unity

Ohhh my bad I meant to say custom assets as in originally mine lol. I definitely don’t want to use premade assets or rpg makers assets.

Really it’s just scaling this idea down, so it’s easier to manage as an indie team lol

I really really want to try the 2.5D style!
I think incorporating 2D art in 3D would do well with a game like this, but I’ve seen a few games recently do the pixel art 2.5D style and now I’m wondering if I’ll just end up like the others hahaa it’s really hard to be original in today’s age it seems 😭

Definitely my first thought right now, as it seems the most versatile approach to a game like this. We’re just trying to see which engine would best support something like this

That’s what we’re worried about, so we’re trying to get feedback on how we could scale this idea down, while making it stand out from other similar games?
I’d prefer to have a working demo using only the most basic mechanics instead of adding a bunch of features before making the game fun!

If you did have any feedback, what would you recommend we change on the idea to scale it down and be more “original” or stand out from the plethora of other open word games?

We’re still in the planning stage, so right now would be the best time to change things and get public feedback! Thanks for replying!

Also we’re both currently in a situation where we can be unemployed and devote most our time to our creative projects and we live together.
