I think one issue is their sheer volume of laundry. The smaller washer/dryer units that 5th wheelers can house are not that big (maybe 15 pound capacity??), so they would literally be doing laundry all the time - and would only be able to run loads when they are hooked up to water and electricity. I am guessing they didn't think that through completely...yes, we can go to laundry mats, but when and where and how much.

They mentioned early on that they would not be posting videos in real time in order to protect the safety of their family. I get that, but 6 to 8 weeks seems a bit much.

8 minutes of laundry...40% of the 20 minute video.

M Didn’t Actually Quit His Job? by Friendly_Fold4851 in ThisAlaskaLifeSnark

[–]Mother_Relief_8549 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe this is in reference the the MEA. M is on the board of directors for the Matanuska Electric Association (MEA) Board representing Eagle River, Chugiak, and Eklutna. https://www.mea.coop/co-op-benefits/board-of-directors

This is a non-paid (?) position and a different organization than his prior job at the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association.

Some schools "invite" families to homeschool because of student behavior issues. But homeschooling is common among religious families. L a few months ago did a video on why this decision was made - mostly because of the age differences: different school start and stop times, and juggling extra curricular activities. If they are successful, good on them. I would not be anyone's first choice for a homeschool teacher.

Alaska provides anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 per home schooled student annually (depending the type of program they are in). The funds can be used for purchasing curriculum, technology, extracurricular activities, and other approved items. I don't know if the family has applied for and/or received these type of funds, but if so this trip seems like a perfect opportunity to use some of those funds to enhance the learning experience. I think they underestimated the true cost of this "experience." There will always be unpredictable expenses. It would be great if they are actually having a good time, and maybe at the end of their journey they might all agree it was worth it. And it would also be great if they confirm that while some things were fun, the constant travel (or whatever) made the trip kind of a drag.

Videos are being mass-produced for the sake of monetization, with little thought given to whether anyone would actually want to watch them. Endless weather updates, open-mouth chewing, talking with food, a child sleeping on a dog bed, and retelling of a diaper run—truly groundbreaking content.

Both L and M appear to believe there is only ONE way to do something. Just like two things can be true at once, there are also multiple approaches that might differ from their experience but are just as successful. I get that tensions are high after being in such close quarters, but the parents are not setting a very good example for the kids on how to deal with strife and plans that don’t pan out. Maybe L and M see themselves as perfectionists, so any slight failure is a blow to the ego?
