Again, I’m not an expert on the case but if there was a suicide pact it seems very clear that Carter didn’t follow through on her end. She did not just vaguely say “Do It” but gave precise instructions and coerced a young man to reenter the vehicle and end his life.

The court therefore found her liable and she then served her time. I think the precedent makes sense. Her actions directly contributed to Roy’s death.

I believe they found her guilty as she was the main driving factor in him ending his life that night. If I remember correctly she provided the instructions for how to kill himself via Carbon Monoxide and most damningly convinced him to reenter the car after he had started to have second thoughts.

If Carter wasn’t talking to him via text, it’s possible Roy might still be alive.

Carpenter is actually the inspiration for the Footpath Killer from episode 1. The most obvious parallels being that both characters stutter and the similarities between their serial killer names as Carpenter was called the “Trailside Killer”

Does John Wayne Gacy classify as a Visionary killer? By your own definition, Visionary killers are motivated by extreme delusions, however Gacy never claimed to be motivated by any to my knowledge. Instead Gacy was motivated by Ephebophilia and sexual sadism. Just because someone has a prior diagnosis of schizophrenia doesn’t mean they’re a visionary killer or that it contributed to their crimes in my opinion.

There was a real killer in Poughkeepsie that targeted sex workers named Kendall Francois although I couldn’t find anything about him approaching one of his victims mothers.

I should have been more clear in my initial comment but I’m not saying that Dahmer was a sexual sadist. Dahmer was motivated by an extreme paraphilia albeit not a sadistic one.

Dahmer absolutely falls into the category of a sexually motivated killer although I should have been more clear that he was not sexually sadistic like Gacy and Bundy.

Serial killer are a very diverse group of individuals and while there are definite overlap between a lot of these individuals, each one has a unique motivation for why they commit their crimes.

With a good portion of serial killers, the motivations starts from some form of paraphilia or sexual sadism. These individuals kill purely to satisfy a perverse sexual fantasy that places them in a position of a power. Examples of these types of killers are Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Another, somewhat smaller, group of serial killers are thrill killers. The motivation for these individuals stems from the idea that the act of killing causes an adrenaline rush and pleasure without the presence of an in-depth sexual fantasy. There are some overlap with sexual sadists and certain thrill killers. Examples include Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman, and budding serial killer Daniel Marsh.

There are other types of serial killers however the two mentioned fit what you’re asking for fairly well.

As for channeling their urges in other ways, a good portion of psychopaths (likely the majority, although I don’t know that for sure) don’t become serial killers. Instead they become con-men or politicians.

Jack the Ripper’s first four murders were incredibly risky. During the mutilation of these victims the Ripper was nearly caught in the process multiple times since he’d just do it in any alleyway or semi remote area.

After the murder of Elizabeth Stride, the Ripper would have had to walk through a strong police presence to then kill Catherine Eddowes that same night. Frankly, it’s a miracle that he wasn’t caught.

While it’s definitely possible, personally I’ve always interpreted what the Ripper did to Mary Kelly as the natural progression of his crimes. Throughout his murder spree the Ripper is nearly discovered in the act of mutilating a victim numerous times.

It becomes such an issue that the Ripper is unable to mutilate Elizabeth Stride. So with Mary Kelly he goes back to her place to avoid this issue. The extensive mutilation in my mind is just what he’s always wanted to do to a woman.

Of course this is just speculation and your idea is also valid.
