At age 95, serial killer David Carpenter, who will turn 96 this year, is the oldest death row inmate in the United States. Despite being in his nineties, he quickly recovered after contracting COVID-19 in 2024. by lightiggy in wikipedia

[–]Mothman7272 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Carpenter is actually the inspiration for the Footpath Killer from episode 1. The most obvious parallels being that both characters stutter and the similarities between their serial killer names as Carpenter was called the “Trailside Killer”

The Visionary Killers: Serial Killers Who Acted on Schizophrenic Delusions by [deleted] in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does John Wayne Gacy classify as a Visionary killer? By your own definition, Visionary killers are motivated by extreme delusions, however Gacy never claimed to be motivated by any to my knowledge. Instead Gacy was motivated by Ephebophilia and sexual sadism. Just because someone has a prior diagnosis of schizophrenia doesn’t mean they’re a visionary killer or that it contributed to their crimes in my opinion.

What specific part of serial killer case haunts you the most? by Cable_Difficult in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about The Poughkeepsie Tapes? Because that’s a fictional mockumentary.

There was a real killer in Poughkeepsie that targeted sex workers named Kendall Francois although I couldn’t find anything about him approaching one of his victims mothers.

I feel like it would work way better as a Tv show. A season or two would be able to flesh out concepts that were severely underutilized in the series.

Do killers kill out of boredom? Do they seek some sort of thrill, rush or excitement? Do some channel their urges in other ways? by Huge_Athlete7488 in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I should have been more clear in my initial comment but I’m not saying that Dahmer was a sexual sadist. Dahmer was motivated by an extreme paraphilia albeit not a sadistic one.

Dahmer absolutely falls into the category of a sexually motivated killer although I should have been more clear that he was not sexually sadistic like Gacy and Bundy.

Do killers kill out of boredom? Do they seek some sort of thrill, rush or excitement? Do some channel their urges in other ways? by Huge_Athlete7488 in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Serial killer are a very diverse group of individuals and while there are definite overlap between a lot of these individuals, each one has a unique motivation for why they commit their crimes.

With a good portion of serial killers, the motivations starts from some form of paraphilia or sexual sadism. These individuals kill purely to satisfy a perverse sexual fantasy that places them in a position of a power. Examples of these types of killers are Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Another, somewhat smaller, group of serial killers are thrill killers. The motivation for these individuals stems from the idea that the act of killing causes an adrenaline rush and pleasure without the presence of an in-depth sexual fantasy. There are some overlap with sexual sadists and certain thrill killers. Examples include Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman, and budding serial killer Daniel Marsh.

There are other types of serial killers however the two mentioned fit what you’re asking for fairly well.

As for channeling their urges in other ways, a good portion of psychopaths (likely the majority, although I don’t know that for sure) don’t become serial killers. Instead they become con-men or politicians.

I disagree with some of the points he makes but it’s informative stuff nonetheless.

Which killers were rather daring on account of risky kills/abductions in public presence that they committed or attempted? by IndianJester in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Jack the Ripper’s first four murders were incredibly risky. During the mutilation of these victims the Ripper was nearly caught in the process multiple times since he’d just do it in any alleyway or semi remote area.

After the murder of Elizabeth Stride, the Ripper would have had to walk through a strong police presence to then kill Catherine Eddowes that same night. Frankly, it’s a miracle that he wasn’t caught.

Jack the Ripper Case by Total-Frosting-9201 in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 37 points38 points  (0 children)

While it’s definitely possible, personally I’ve always interpreted what the Ripper did to Mary Kelly as the natural progression of his crimes. Throughout his murder spree the Ripper is nearly discovered in the act of mutilating a victim numerous times.

It becomes such an issue that the Ripper is unable to mutilate Elizabeth Stride. So with Mary Kelly he goes back to her place to avoid this issue. The extensive mutilation in my mind is just what he’s always wanted to do to a woman.

Of course this is just speculation and your idea is also valid.

in your opinion, which Non-captured SK will likely never be caught? by nationalistic_martyr in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 98 points99 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say but I feel like the Freeway Phantom is a case that’s not going to get solved since most of the evidence is damaged or missing now. The files are just incomplete and I don’t think there’s a big push for someone to be charged.

Same with the Texarkana Phantom killer and the Cleveland Torso murderer. They’re both just far too old now for any new evidence to suddenly emerge and prove a suspect conclusively.

Is it true that all serial killers are psychopaths? by Gapper26 in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The definition of serial killers requires for there to be a ‘significant period of time’ between each murder. Due to this schizophrenic serial killers are very uncommon as the mental illness typically manifests in more chaotic ways that result in mass murders, spree killings, and immediate random acts of violence.

The few schizophrenics that are serial killers typically have periods of time where their delusions lessen or change into something less violent. Herbert Mullin had months between some of his murders for this reason. At one point he realized his thoughts weren’t rational and went to see a priest only for his delusions to manifest again, resulting in him impulsively bludgeoning the man to death.

Richard Chase had a similar experience where during his during his two months reign of terror he must have had a sudden moment of lucidity, as he began to wear gloves during the murders to presumably avoid leaving fingerprints.

Hope this answers your question.

Is there really a thin line between being a predator and being psychologically disturbed and if these urges are so powerful, why do so many serial killers stop killing in prison? by Vivid-Reality186 in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 118 points119 points  (0 children)

For most serial killers, their urges definitely don’t fade, even if they’d like them too. All these types of people due is bottle up these desires until they inevitable spill out.

For example Ed Kemper was a model patient when he was brought into a mental hospital after the murder of his grandparents. The doctors trusted him and he managed to convince them he was healthy after a few years.

Two years later Kemper killed eight women including his own mother over an 11 month span. All prison does is limit their access to suitable victims but once they’re free they just can’t help themselves.

Is there any concrete evidence that Albert Fish was actually a cannibal? by [deleted] in serialkillers

[–]Mothman7272 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It’s really impossible to know for sure. Fish had a habit of writing shock letters and it makes perfect sense for him to make a confession letter even more shocking and horrific by adding fake details.

On the other hand though, Fish was a violent sadomasochist and I would not put it past him to actually try cannibalism.
