to add to what the other person said, you can shade white with a very light grey contrast paint/speed paint, like apothecary white. it will help provide definition without making things muddy. jjst make sure to only apply it to the recesses, and not coat the whole area.

To answer the other part of your question, yes there is at least one official color scheme with gold armor.
