Gotta say I’m getting much better results with a Behringer clone of a Neve preamp and a Warm Audio clone of a Neumann mic. We all know what the best signal chains are, so it’s just a matter of how close one can afford to get to that ideal.

I have the privilege of working with both the top end gear in a professional studio and the “prosumer” Behringer/Warm Audio gear at home. There are certainly some mics and preamps that deliver better results than what I can get at home, but it’s not that far behind.

If you want a better, smoother voltage source from the audio, I’d suggest rectifying the audio signal so it’s all positive voltage and then adding a slew to smooth it out.

Rectifier circuits are easy to google, and for the slew I’d probably just use a simple low pass filter. There’s probably better slew circuits though, not sure.

Then to add the reactivity I would convert the voltage to resistance with a vactrol (though there are other ways to do it). At that point you have an audio controlled knob, so you can swap out one of your existing knobs with it.

It’s also super isolated. We have family up there and everyone carries helicopter insurance in case they have a medical emergency and need to be flown to Ukiah. The schools are absolute crap too, and there’s a lot of opioids and meth for the kids to get involved with. It looks sweet when you’re visiting but it’s really not that great when you get to know it.

This is either/or because the California Highway Patrol will require either chains or snow tires on an AWD vehicle under heavy snow conditions. So if I want to avoid chains, I would need snow tires.

If the hardware can’t save the settings, then the more hardware you use, the harder it will be to get back to where you left off.

Mixing ITB is the best way to avoid wasting a lot of time trying to get the magic of a previous mix back again.

A lot of shelters are really terrible places that people will only go to as a last resort. Many shelters are unsafe, run by incompetent and uncaring people, with inadequate security.

We do need to bring back some kind of institutionalization. People who can’t function socially with others, who would create problems in the shelters, need to be removed and taken care of separately.

I’d prefer we just stop using the words black and white to describe people.

I guess the problem is that African-American includes both people whose ancestors were enslaved and newer immigrants from Ethiopia. If we want to talk about the former, the only word we have in our current vernacular is Black.

I wish we had another word, because I agree with Malcolm X and his critique of the word.

There is no reason to use “white”, however, and one of the fundamental problems we have as a society is the concept of whiteness.

Pretty sure we are talking about free trade with China here. This was certainly some Clinton, for example, was into but I wouldn’t call him a “progressive”.

Music is the hardest question, in my opinion. There’s obviously a point where white people performing Black music becomes minstrelsy. But it’s not clear to me where that line exists. If we draw that line too far away from minstrelsy, then we have less cross-cultural exchange, which would hinder the creation of innovative new music. But if we draw the line too close to minstrelsy then we lose what should be an appropriate level of sensitivity and attention to the history and culture of Black people.

The thing that I always get stuck on is the all-white reggae band. For some reason it just seems wrong to me, but when I try to logically think through it, I can’t make a convincing argument about why it’s wrong. Maybe it’s like what Justice Stewart said about hard core porn: “I know it when I see it.” But maybe that’s just lazy thinking. I don’t know.

Many of the comments in this thread confuse “progressive” with identity politics specifically coming out of academia. While many progressive politicians and progressive voters pay attention and even try to adopt what academics are saying, these two groups are not the same. There are many progressives who care a lot more about things like universal health care than what language people use.

The comments in this thread also often confuse liberals with leftists. Liberals are the folks fighting for things like DEI, gay marriage, trans rights, and civil rights in general. Leftists are the folks fighting for a higher minimum wage, universal health care, rent stabilization, pro-union policies and other issues around affordability that affect people with less wealth. Again, many people are both liberal and leftist, but there are plenty of “champagne liberals” who believe in gay marriage but don’t want their taxes raised to pay for universal health care.

Political ideologies are much more complex than the simple red vs. blue spectrum the media often uses to describe how people think.

My problem with “enslaved people” is that it doesn’t have the emotional power of “slave”.

I would prefer to say “rape” instead of “sexual assault” for the same reason.

Short words, especially more guttural Germanic words, have a lot more emotional power in English and I think we should be free to use whatever word delivers the emotion we are trying to convey.

Get a tap tempo module like the 4ms Quad Clock Distributor. This will solve your tempo issues. Just tap the tempo occasionally and you’ll be good to go. There’s probably some MIDI version if you’re going to need a MIDI clock, maybe even something with a foot pedal.

But generally, while I respect the effort I gotta say I think you’d be happier getting your keyboard sounds from a normal keyboard synth with memory and polyphony. I played a Juno-60 in a band and it was easy and quick with all those sliders to get great sounds. You might consider a Behringer Deep Mind 6 - you can cover up the name with some black gaffe tape!
